“Stunning views. Not 5 star mainly due to service. ”
There is no denying that Scrub Island and Resort is in a beautiful setting. However while our experience is overall positive, the resort should make quick improvements to especially their service which I believe when complete, will put them back to a 5 star category. Positives - absolutely beautiful setting. - food is in general good. Marina Cay (5 mins away by ferry) is best, followed by Cardamon. Unlike many resorts meals are not included in the accommodation booking. - We stayed in a guest room, very spacious. - The pool and beach at the marina is easy to access, pool is meant only for resort guests (but can get busy). - The north beach, a 15 min walk from the resort, offers much better seclusion and we spent a whole day there relaxing. - Some of the staff especially Ronisha (assistant manager), Carl (restaurant manager) and the ferry crew were very helpful and tried to resolve issues we encountered. Negatives - Staff seems variable in terms of knowledge and helpfulness. For example for 4/6 nights we did not have the turn down service and when we phoned, twice the reception staff did not know what that was, despite this being on the guest welcome letter. - Rooms starting to get dated. However our first room had fresh paint (opening the balcony doors tore the layer of paint), but did not have a working bath plug release mechanism. When the maintenance staff came he said he couldn’t fix it and asked if we can tell the front desk every time the bath needs drained! Our 2nd room had issues with leak from the shower as the rubber seal has deteriorated, which they could not easily fix. - We weren’t allowed a kettle for the guest room despite they provided tea. When called Steve the receptionist told us to use the drip coffee maker to heat up the water! This is not possible in some guestrooms which didn’t have a drip coffee maker (we have been in 2 rooms). - We also asked to change rooms as our first room overlooked the trash area and had a large garden in front of the room, leading to the next problem… - Mosquitoes: major issue from about 5pm onwards. Bring your insect repellant! - Communication with resort guests. We made a booking for dinner at Cardamon. Bookings in advance was recommended when we checked in. However on the day when we walked into Cardamon we found that it was closed for a private booking. The only other restaurant (Donovan’s Reef, the poolside cafe) was as a result rammed (Marina Cay was closed on the Monday too) and only by speaking with the assistant manager on the phone they found a table for us at Donovan’s Reef. We also made reservations on the phone via the reception for other restaurants which did not seem to have been confirmed, again seems like a staff communication issue. - Staffing at the levels are the restaurants vary. One night in Cardamon our waitress was looking after 7 tables including 2 large groups. - We walked in one night at 8pm and they had to check whether the kitchen is still open. I think most guests do eat early so this may be the reason why they don’t open till late as advertised. - The on site convenience store is well stocked but more with expensive items. Also there were no diet soft drinks for example. - On departure they forgot to transfer our luggage from the reception to the ferry despite I triple checked with reception and also checked they had applied the labels to specify the time it is to go on the ferry. Thankfully Junior the captain of the ferry and another staff member helped to turn the boat back and we made up for lost time.
