Situation wonderful but not a hotel as we know it”
The pros are the views, the swifts and kites from the courtyards in the evening, the experience of troglodytic existence, the gorge during a tempesta and being snug in your cave. The cons are the endless unsafe steps, generally sweet but slightly inept staff (one breakfast waiter was rather inappropriate but the rest of the staff tried to be helpful), a lack of some of the usual amenities of a 4* hotel (shampoo, conditioner, bottled water, TV,), a sense of communal living (since in most caves the only real daylight is through the open door. We stayed 5 days (there is plenty to see in Matera, we had a car- a nightmare in Matera but we got to see a few other places as well). Most people stay only 1 or 2 days and that prevents it feeling like a settled hotel. It can be likened to a youth hostel for well-off middle aged people I feel.

Dear Jonhatan, Thank you for staying at our hotel. We will certainly take your feedback into consideration to improve even more the service offered to our guests. Also, we would like to apologize for any kind of inconvenient although we are truly sorry that your expectations didn't match with the philosophy behind this unique project that justifies in full our choices: our caves have been restored and furnished remaining faithful to the cultural and human history of the Sassi of Matera through a careful conservative salvage of spaces and materials in order to let our guests enjoying a very special and ancient atmosphere. Furnishing in each cave is voluntarily essential with very naturals and not treated homemade soaps, water served in jugs instead of plastic bottles, top level showers and bathtubs and an efficient heating, conditioning and plumbing system. Of course at the reception desk, upon request, we are pleased to provide conditioner, extra lamps and more modern amenities. Ciao!

Exceptional”
An experience not to be missed. Staying in a traditional cave environment was amazing. The way the hotel captures the values of the past so you can experience the magic of Matera but in absolute luxury was fantastic. Breakfast was great with a traditional feel,, the appetisers before you head out for dinner a great touch. This is the only way to stay in Matera and don't miss Matera on your bucket list it is a gem!

Not 4 stars, value lacking”
Breakfast, giula from front desk.
The hotel is more like a 3-star B&B than a 4-star hotel. Given the high price of the stay ultimately we felt a bit like the value just wasn't there. - no help with bags upon arrival unless you ask - rooms are totally damp. Sheets damp, standing water on floor - room was full of Mosquitos - the rooms are on a main tourist drag. You have 1 window and often when you open it to have some light there are tourists right outside aiming their cameras into your room. It's not secluded or private at all - the "room service" is that they can bring nuts or water to your room (some items were not available when we were there). There is no restaurant just breakfast. - no shower, just a big awkward bathtub in middle of sleeping area - no refrigerator - no privacy to bathroom or door - you get 2 hangers and a nail on the wall plus a narrow bench to store your belongings. For 2 ppl it's not enough. - the photos make it seem like it's full of candles, but in reality our room had a total of only 4 candles which after arrival we had to light ourselves (with damp matches) as there is no turndown service. Expect lots of fumbling in the dark! Though there were some nice moments, it ultimately just is not a4 star hotel. It more closely resemvles camping. They chalk all of their shortcomings to it being an authentic rustic experience but almost everything in matera is in a cave and lit by candles. When we found many much more luxurious hotels in matera were charging less money per night and providing just as an authentic experience with more comfort we wish we had booked there as we would just have felt better about how our money was spent.

Beguiling; but ultimately disappointing.”
The Staff. The Plumbing. The Romance.
A real Curate's egg. Undeniably unique and beguiling. However, once the novelty effect has worn off, the lustre begins to pall quite rapidly! God forbid you should experience inclement weather,(as we did on one day) because this is not a hotel One can retreat too on a miserable day with any degree of comfort to relax in. Nothing but hard, austere school-type benches or knackered old tiny wooden chairs, some with the straw seating having seen better days. In the 'caves' (bedrooms) themselves there is nowhere to sit at all except on your bed. The floors are uncomfortable to walk on in bare feet, uneven and sometimes dangerous. The bedrooms have no facilities for hanging damp towels: no bedside reading light (I had to borrow a plug-in job from reception:) no towelling bath robes: slippers are provided yes, but only in one size and for the tiniest of feet: very basic and ineffectual hanging space: no drawers for smalls etc, resulting in Your having to liberally distribute your personal effects around the cave, which must be a nightmare for room service, (we dispensed with that) or live out of a suitcase. No safe for valuables: no mini-bar: no way of controlling the temperature of the cave, we boiled during the night, it's under-floor heating and it just doesn't react quickly enough, having requested that it be turned OFF during the whole of our stay. The one window opening was so high off the ground that I needed a metal pole and to stand on a hard bench each time in order to try and open it, and I'm 6'5". Even then it seems to make no discernible difference to the temperature of the cave. The dim, recessed lighting, whilst very romantic and mood enhancing, is actually very impractical, you can't find anything easily. If you like a dark room to sleep in as we do, forget it, there are no curtains or black out blinds,. Whilst the bulk of the breakfast offerings were not my idea of breakfast food, they are nevertheless of excellent quality and the choice is good.
