Close to beach, but dirty.
The hotel owner must understand that dirt cheap, does not mean dirty. The hotel is very basic, the prices reasonable but could really use some cleaning.

Not safe for female travelers
This hotel is not safe for female travelers. The windows in the rooms do not lock. At 2am I woke up to one of the staff opening the shade to my window and looking in at me. There is wire that covers the window from the inside but there is a hole big enough to stick a hand and arm through. This staff member opened the glass window and stuck his hand through the wire to open the shade. I freaked out and called the manager who said he would come but didn't until I called him an hour later. He said he came but didn't see anyone and he 'didn't want to disturb me'. The owner wasn't even going to check on me after I told him a man was looking through my window? Not ok. The next morning (after not sleeping the rest of the night) I left and not once did he apologize as I was checking out. Then when I was getting in the tuk tuk he finally asked 'everything ok?' At which I said 'no! everything is not ok' and detailed events of the night again to him. His response? 'I'm sorry for the inconvenience' I stayed in Trincomalee at a nice hotel for the next 2 nights. Ladies, spend the money for a nicer place with better security. This is not a safe place to stay.

Adequate and near the sea
Staff friendliness, location and garden
Great staff, interesting garden with all sorts of wildlife (bats at night), nice but not brilliant food (good food places over the road, including the unmarked White House opposite) But I comfy beds.

Great Budget Hotel with really friendly staff.
Location, staff, price
It is hard to find decent budget accomodation in some parts of Sri Lanka. Finding somewhere around $20 is sometimes a bit dodgy but staying at Sharhira wasn't one of those times. You get a clean room with a good working fan. The gardens are really nice to chill out in (except the russians walking around in their underwear wtf?). It is only a few minutes walk to a dreamy beach were you can relax to your hearts content. The staff at the hotel are really lovely. They will chat away or leave you alone, depending on what you need. One staff member was even nice enough to show me a cosmic star alignment! A lovely effort was put in at dinner to make a nice ambiance with a lamp and table cloth. The food is ok. I got the friend rice and it was good, but next time I would just get he veggie one instead of meat as it wasn't great meat and there wasn't a huge amount. They have a friend who can take you to Pigeon Island for a half day, which is a beautiful spot to snorkel in. Go with him as he organises even a guide for you to show you the best places. So yeah, nice budget accom. Like all hotels in Sri Lanka at this price they could scrub the bathroom walls but alas, if that's all i can whinge about then we are onto a winner!

Good value and friendly staff
Room good value, peaceful ambience, well located for beach
Quiet spot a few minutes walk from beach. Staff are helpful and the manager is attentive and friendly. The rooms have maybe seen better days but were fine for sleeping purposes and our bathroom had hot shower available although cold was bettr in the heat.
