Very nice hotel and excellent guest service”
shambaling is a very nice hotel, located just 10 minutes taxi ride from downtown. the hotel is just 5 minutes walk from the biggest "stupa" in kathmandu and the stupa offers several restaurants, cafes and gift shop. the best part of the hotel is the staff. from the welcome to the farewell they are all extremely kind and helpful. they help you with any issue you might come across. they are always smiling, polite. the receptionist girl (tenzing) and the general manager were very resourceful. but the whole staff was amazing! the hotel and the rooms are very clean. outside there's a garden where you can have dinner/breakfast as well as an inside restaurant. wi-fi is complimentary, although the best coverage is near the reception (depending on the location of your room you might lose it). i will definitely go back to shambaling hotel if in nepal.

Heart of Kathmandu-spiritually beautiful”
Loved this hotel! I've had the pleasure of visiting Nepal before and I've stayed at the Hyatt, Forrest Resort, and Hotel Shambaling. For the money, it's a great value. The other 2 hotels appear to be on a larger plot of land so that you don't feel like you're in the busy city, but they usually also come with a price. This hotel was incredible. We stayed on 3 separate occasions during my 3 week trip to Nepal. Every time we came back they upgraded us! Talk about incredible rooms! I love the Buddhist inspiration and each floor has a different theme. water, fire, land, etc. Breakfast was good and I enjoyed the garden right outside the front door. The city around the hotel is dusty, but that's all of Kathmandu. You still feel away from it all in the enclosed hotel location. Nice welcoming drinks and at least when we visited Free Wifi in the check-in lobby. Will definitely stay again!

Hotel Shambaling has done it right! From the moment you arrive at the hotel, the staff are waiting to serve you in any way possible. We stayed here our last night in Kathmandu and it was the perfect retreat away from the hustle and bustle of Thamel. Serene, peaceful, very comfortable with hot rain showers, large beds and spacious rooms, this place has it all. The restaurant served excellent food as well. Would definitely recommend to anyone staying around the Kathmandu area. Also about 10 mins to the airport, so very convenient.

Hotel Shambaling is a wonderful, warm, luxuriously quaint hotel very near the stupa. Our room was lovely, nicely decorated, with a Santorini-esque, deep-blue-and-white look, complete with a book of buddhism, and a 'singing bowl'. Windows look out into a lovely little garden restaurant. And the breakfast, superb! Delicious muesli, yogurt, honey, fruits, eggs, and delectable pastries and toasts. (It's a bit dangerous really -- just too good). The restaurant food during the day and evening, though a bit pricey, is great as well. The staff is very friendly and kind, as well as helpful. They actually upgraded us for two nights to a much bigger room. This was probably our favorite place we stayed in Nepal, and we'd go back in a heartbeat. Tranquil, Honeymoon quality atmosphere. Just great, but if there are a couple things, make sure to have a pair of earplugs; our room with the windows overlooking the garden let in lots of dog barks throughout the night. Also, there wasn't any fan or AC in our room, and it got quite muggy. Other rooms might provide alternatives however.

This is the second time I have stayed at the Shambaling and I enjoyed my stay as much as the first. It is a very calm and well run hotel with great staff in a very interesting and peaceful part of Kathmandu. I would not hesitate to stay here again and strongly recommend it

Amazing days”
I stayed 3 days in shambaling with my friends, and I had such a good time!! Even though hotels a bit far away from tour places, shambaling was so clean and nice that after a long tour, the hotel felt like heaven to all of us. prices a bit high and restaurant there was even more expensive, i would surely visit ahambaling if i ever go back to Nepal:D

Near the great Boudha Stupa”
Just spent a night at the Shambaling Hotel. Most taxi drivers are quite clueless about the hotel but I was fortunate enough to have found one. The hotel was serene and nice - a huge contrast from the hussle and bussle of Kathmandu. Friendly reception - checking was a breeze, the reception lady gave a tour of the room which was nice. They had international adapters, hot water, electric blankets, non interruptible electricity and a nice restaurant. The weather in Nepal can be nasty and the above would make your stay here very pleasant. Walking distance to Boudha Stupa but it can be quite tricky walking back to the hotel at night as the streets are almost pitch dark. I missed my turning and lost my way but after going around and round I finally found the hotel. Its the only hotel I stayed in Kathmandu during winter - I think its a great hotel.

An oasis of peacefulness and cleanliness!”
Our stay was sublime. It genuinely felt like we were coming home when we returned to Kathmandu from Pokhara. It is a new hotel, done to high design specs and is kept immaculately clean. The staff give the hotel its ambience however. Always smiling, always helpful and seem to genuinely enjoy meeting the guests. It is very near the Boudha stuppa, a 30-min walk from Kopan monastery but everything else is a taxi ride away. This meant we would be gone a huge portion of the day without 'popping' back to the hotel for a rest...but once we returned to the hotel it was an oasis away from the noise and even the smog of Kathmandu inside the peaceful, well-maintained garden.

Best stay in Kathmandu!”
By far the best of the three 4-5 star Kathmandu hotels we stayed in during our trip to Nepal. Beautifully remodeled traditional Tibetan guesthouse in a quiet neighborhood just a 5-minute walk down a shop-lined street to the Boudhanath stupa. The staff is lovely and very knowledgeable; ask them for their recommendations! Our rate included breakfast, which was delicious and of the quality/presentation you'd expect from a highly-rated hotel in any major city. The rooms are gorgeous, though if you want WiFi access in your room be sure to request one on the ground floor near reception (only reception/lobby has WiFi at this time). We were upgraded to a deluxe room overlooking the gardens, with a rainfall shower head and power adapters ready in every outlet. The manager invited us to the Nepalese BBQ/Christmas party they were hosting for locals and guests. An all-around great experience!

Great hotel in Boudha”
We just loved Shambaling, it's an oasis in Boudha, near the stupa but far from the noise. The staff is so kind, and helped us on getting a taxi and a ticket to Lumbini. Also, the restaurant is delicious, loved the thukpa. You could not go wrong staying in Shambaling.

It's the best place to stay in Kathmandu if you want to get away from all the noise and polution. The hotel has such a peaceful atmosphere that makes it feel like home. I love the courtyard, the tibetan decorations in the room. Staff is very polite, friendly and extremely professional and helpful. And it's only a short walk to the Stupa and all the cafes and restaurants. I was so lucky that on the day I arrived they first upgraded me to the delux room and then invited me to their complimentary buffet Christmas party, and when I left the hotel I received a card and a beautifully wrapped Christmas gift. I enjoyed every minute of my stay, I will definitely go back.

A tranquil place beyond the hustle and bustle of the busy Kathmandu.”
A very tranquil place, green garden with occasional visits of birds, monkey. One special thing is, you get to see OWLs at night! In the middle of the city! I love the place because they are managed by Tibetans! Other than that, room wise very clean and comfortable! The only thing to improve is the maintenance of the rooms especially the lights, the bathrooms and the ventilation of the bathroom, there could be humid odor at times. Shambaling hotel is not a hotel for you to miss out!

My husband and I have been in Nepal for one month. This beautiful boutique hotel was by far the best accomodation we had during our travels. The staff were helpful and extremely friendly. The hotel restaurant outstanding. We ate all our meals there. We arrived on my husbands birthday and they had a beautiful cake waiting for him. The location is awesome. A quick 7 min walk to the Bouda Stupa. By the way the showers are awesome with loads of high pressure hot water and the beds really comfortable. Thankyou so much to all the staff.

Classy hotel but overpriced without heat”
The Shambaling is relatively new and taxi drivers did not know how to find it. Once there, we found the hotel to be well appointed and located in its own gardens near to the Buddha temple. The hotel rooms and bathrooms were spacious and modern, with classy touches. Unfortunately, with temperatures below or near freezing, the lack of heating made sitting around difficult, even though extra duvets were available to supplement the electric blankets on the beds. Staff were very helpful and service and food in the restaurant was outstanding.

A few days in heaven”
This hotel is a rare gem. I could not fault it. An oasis in a busy, dusty city. The gardens were immaculate. Staff so professional and friendly. They all went out of their way to be helpful. I could not fault the staff. The restaurant service and food was the most outstanding I have ever experienced and I am well travelled. More than 30 years travelling the world. I did not even look for other places to eat. I just wanted to try everything on their menu. Only negative no television but that did not worry me. A negative for some maybe. I would always stay there if I return to Kathmandu. If you want nightlife and backpackers this is not for you. If you appreciate fine service and quality this is for you.

Steps away from Boudhanath Stupa”
Overall we were very happy with everything provided for us throughout the stay. Staff went their ways to help us arrange our activities in Nepal. We enjoyed the short stroll down to Boudhanath Stupa which is the main tourist attraction in Kathmandu. Rooms were great with high standards. This is probably a hotel with the best value for money in town.

Just wonderful in every way”
Every now and again, you have the privilege of staying somewhere special. I could go on and on about the standard of the rooms, the food, the peaceful garden and above all Suraj and his team of staff. I have travelled to many countries in my 50 years, from some wonderful Youth Hostels in New Zealand to 5 Star luxury Hotels in Venice, Vienna and South Africa, small friendly guesthouses all over Asia and everything in between. Sometimes a place just hits a "sweet spot" and when you look back on your photographs, if one of the places you stayed is up there amongst the Trek Piccys and the colours and smiles of the people of a land, then you know you have found somewhere you will return too again with absolute certainly - The Shambling is such a place. I'm not going to write much more because my biggest fear is that I won't be able to get in next time I land in Nepal! Joking aside though, everything that can be said about this wonderful hotel has been said in the other reviews here. I stayed in 8 different places during my 3 weeks in Nepal all of which I researched fully before booking - The Shambling was the Jewel in the Crown. Thank you Suraj and all your team for looking after me me so well - It will not be the last time we meet.
