Nice but can be more welcoming”

I arrived at YHA in the middle of the night and my check in was smooth despite only being welcomed by an uncle (guardkeeper). The next morning I had to do the “official check-in”. The process was handled by a young lady, I got intimidated by her unwelcoming attitude (lack of smile etc) - this can be improved. But during my check out day, it was handled by a nice and super friendly middle-age lady (I like her!). REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR OWN TOILETRIES LIKE TOWEL, SHAMPOO EVEN SLIPPER ETC unless you want to spend some dimes (the place sell basic toiletries too). On a side note, I went there during winter so, I definitely need a slipper, the floor was icy cold!

The hostel is good! It is nice to have an individual bathroom for each bedroom, but the bedrooms are really small. I was in a 6 people/bedroom and there was no enough space for all of our stuff. The check in at 14:00 is not really good and the lady that was working at that time was really rude to the customers. The location is perfect

We booked in the hotel and indicated the time of arrival at a very late time. Upon arrival in the area, the guard won't accommodate us to enter in the hotel or even stay in the lobby. So we decided to move to nearest hotel to stay that night and come back early morning.

Great deal for the money!”

The place was awesome for the money. This was my first stay at a hostel, and I stayed one night here. The atmosphere was nice and friendly (greeted me in English), and the facilities were good. There is a common area with a kitchenette, dining area, and pool table. The common area was clean. The bathroom was a little small but the shower, toilet, and sink are all separate so you could have three people doing their business at the same time. The whole bathroom area was pretty clean. The room was sufficient, albeit slightly cramped with 4 people. But realistically we were all just sleeping and storing our stuff there (lockers were a good size), so the size of the room worked well. There was a dark spot on the wall that I didn't investigate whether it was mold or just peeling paint or what, I didn't spend enough time in the room to care (it wasn't big enough to cause concern for the price I paid). Oh, there was AC in the room!! It was a little stuffy at first when we were all changing for bed and whatever, but the room was a great temperature overnight. Overall, I love the location of the hostel. The area immediately around the hostel isn't perfect, but definitely safe enough. Not the cleanest, but I would stay there again for a few nights if I needed to. It is about a 5 minute walk to Nanjing Road which has tons of cool stuff to see, and about a 15-20 minute walk (down Nanjing Road so it's a nice walk) to Huangpu River where you can look across at the awesome Shanghai cityscape. As I said, I would definitely stay here again.

The location is great, it's clean”

Pros The location is great, very near to the train station(nanjing east road station) and Nanjing road shopping district. It's also easy to find! You can walk to the bund or renming guangchang. No worry for the food because everything famous like xiao yang shengjian, haidilao, nanxiang can be reached within walking distance. The room is also very clean and there's no weird smell. House keepers will help to change our towel everyday. The receptionist is also friendly, she let us have 2 access card by paying 200rmb deposits. You can also choose to put ur luggage there if you check out early and have a late flight. Cons The lighting of our room is quite dark. Which may be inconvenient for some people. I'm not sure how to use the water dispenser, seems like only hot water is available. Overall, it's a good stay. Will choose to stay here again when we go Shanghai next time.

Not bad ”

This hostel is 5 minutes walk from the Bund. It’s very convenient to move around and do some touring. The rooms are a bit small for 6 people but it worked. Cleaning staff clean the bathrooms and toilets every morning which was nice (didn’t expect that). So many restaurants nearby if you don’t like the hostel food. Only thing I didn’t like about the place was that they don’t change the beddings after one occupant has exited the bed/hostel. So you might as well have slept on a beddings not changed for one month (you’d never know). I’m saying this because an occupant in my hostel room checked out (she was there for 2 weeks) and they just remade the bed with the same sheets for the next person, that was absolutely disgusting. If you can, bring your own sheets to be on the safe side. Asides this, the hostel was spot on. If I’m back in Shanghai, I’ll stay at this hostel again (obviously bring my own bedsheets)

Fantastic location”

I stayed in a private room. It was big, and the toilet/shower worked well. Staff came to take garbage and change towels whether I wanted them to or not (no "DO NOT DISTURB" signs for the door, unfortunately). Note that there are no in-room safes, so hide your valuables or take them with, but I had no problems at all with anything missing from the room, and the staff here is probably trustworthy. Bed linens on the comfortable bed were clean. I did not use the air conditioning. There is an elevator, but it is shut down from 11pm-8am, so be aware of that if you have big bags. I could not get internet to function on two of my devices, but I did not bother the staff about this as I had a SIM card that included data. It is Chinese internet anyway, so expect to be behind the Great Firewall. The location is what you're paying for here, and it is less than two minutes walk from the famous Nanjing Road Pedestrian Area and very close to Nanjing East Road subway station! 9.5/10

Great Location, Rooms are not ”

Pros: Located 5-minutes walk from the Exit 1 of East Nanjing Road Station.. It's strategically located in the best shopping area in Shanghai and the iconic The Bund is just 10-minutes walk. From Pudong International Airport, you can ride Line 2 to East Nanjing for about 45 minutes. From the location standpoint alone, the property cannot be beat. Also, affordable rooms. Staff speak English. The Cons: Rooms are not that clean and the restroom/bathroom has no ameneties, whatsover. It's also a bit cramped and there are no privacy curtains . I also wish there are more facilities. It's a barebones as anyone can get in Shanghai, which is disappointing since I stayed in Phoenix Hostel a night before. I also wish the staff would smile more often. They are a bit stern and looks unapproachable. Overall, if you want the best location for a cheap price, then this is a good choice.

(I Guess) No Worse Than Other Chinese Hostels…”

This place is more or less typical of big Chinese hostels – meaning you have to keep expectations LOW. They do clean the place BUT never thoroughly – meaning the bathrooms would get a bit dirty fast. At least they had enough toilets/showers on various floors that could be used as often Chinese hostels will have only have the bear minimum. HOWEVER, there was no soap at any of the sinks to wash your hands after using the toilet BUT at least the hot water in the showers was usually nice and hot. I stayed on the third floor where dorm rooms can be an Internet dead zone as they have Wi-Fi receivers on the 2nd and 4th floors BUT not the third. Even then (as I stayed for a week), the Internet seemed unreliable as first I thought it was my VPN also acting up, but in Suzhou/Hangzhou I had much less trouble – so I think it was the underlying Internet here (especially when everyone comes back in the evening). There is a lounge on the third floor and a kitchen eating area directly below that with a hot water dispenser BUT rarely if ever did I see any mugs or glasses as it seems Chinese usually carry their own thermostats. If you can’t speak Chinese, the front desk can be reasonably helpful depending on your needs and attitude towards them. They also have booklets with train schedules and things to do on the bookcases. I never ate at the restaurant here. Around the corner as you come from Nanjing Road, there is a Chinese restaurant where every item is in English with a picture and staff can speak passable English. I ate there on most nights. There are also two bakeries in complexes by or above the metro station along with a supermarket. The good things about this hostel though would be the location as it’s a very short walk to Nanjing Road and the metro station plus you can walk to the Bund from here – meaning it’s a very convenient place to stay for a few days if your expectations aren’t that high for Chinese hostels and you want convenience.

This hostel was in a great location in East Nanjing right by the subway so you had easy access to all areas of Shanghai. Only thing it lacked was soap in the showers. We had to go buy our own which was inconvenient especially for a backpacker.

Must read!”

We came to Shanghai prepared and equipped with mobile data and map directions. It did not turn out the way we thought of. First of all for travelers, please use iMAPS for Apple users coz it provides accurate directions and just restart once it messes up. Else use Google Maps + VPN. Moreover, we arrived the hostel at around 3am from being lost around Nanjing road's cold dawn. The place was already understandably dark since it is late but what is unacceptable is the old man who welcomed us. He was rude and was raising his voice. We know he got disturbed from his sleep but we stated that in our reservation that we are arriving late. We even provided a simplified chinese translation. I have never met a person like that in all of the hostels I stayed around Asia. Even if other hostel staff in Asian countries have tough times speaking English, they strive to smile and be polite but not in this hostel in Shanghai. Also, I suggest this hostel put photos in their frontdesk for the primary requirements for check in that will be used by the English illiterate staff to pin point what he/she needs. I am sorry. Furthermore, only a little light and aircon works in this hostel during the night and not even a security guard outside. If you booked a dorm room, your place is at the top of the building so you need to walk going up. When we arrived at the highest floor of the building's walkway, it was dim. I think a sensor light that lights up if it senses motion is not a bad investment. I suggest that the AC remote control should be kept in the frontdesk and should not be left in the rooms. Other guests turn off the AC not knowing others already feel hot. The bed I had was comfy but the atmosphere in this hostel in general is NOT HOMEY. I hope this review helps future travelers and the business itself.
