Bornean hospitality at its best”

That we had to wait 15 minutes for our room to be made ready upon our arrival was the only slight against a marvellous two days spent at the Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort, Kota Kinabalu. The hotel lobby sets a good tone for the resort at large. While not particularly stylish in presentation, its open-plan approach and day-long subtle traditional music makes for a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. Service at the Rasa Ria is probably exactly as seasoned visitors to luxury hotels would expect, but if you're treating yourselves as we were, the genuine warmth that greets your every request is simply delightful, with lots of little appreciative touches everywhere, such as daily weather forecast to help you plan ahead. Indeed, the Rasa Ria would seem like the perfect place to treat yourself, set as it is on a magnificent beach with the rainforest just a stone's throw away. We opted for a standard garden room, which being on the ground floor had the added bonus of easy access to the garden (and beach) from the sliding window. Furnishings were functional rather than breathtaking, but the bed was very comfortable. There are several choices of eateries at the resort, and the food was in general very palatable, though do expect quite a large addition to your bill as without taking a taxi to Kota Kinabalu (and why would you want to do that, frankly) it soon adds up. We might have been fortunate with our timing, or it might simply be the design and capacity of the resort that it never felt busy or clustered during our stay. We made full use of the hotel facilities, including free sessions of tennis, table tennis, bicycle riding, body board surfing and even games of petanque and golf putting. Perfect for keeping a young couple busy. Additionally we paid for horse riding - they have a great beach for it. Having all this at our disposal really made the stay, and actually made the isolation of the resort even more attractive. I certainly hope to return at some point in the future.

Perfect End To An Amazing Holiday”

If you are booking here spend the extra money and stay in the Ocean Wing. It is a must and you will not be disappointed.

My partner and I recently stayed here for 4 nights after a few weeks in Sabah. Early in our trip we were very busy and also trekked Mt Kota Kinabalu. We booked the Premier Ocean Wing King room as a relaxing end to our holiday for some time to unwind. The resort is fantastic. The Ocean Wing is amazing. We loved the pool for Ocean Wing customers only as the other pool was full of young children. The staff around the pool area were very attentive, made great cocktails and also offered a lunch menu. Coast restaurant was lovely for breakfast. Our room however was definitely the highlight. It was the little things which made it so impressive. L’occitane toiletries, turn down service at night, aromatherapy oil burner, fresh fruit daily, private bath and day bed on the balcony. It was bliss. Although we were made aware before we travelled to the resort that some construction work would be in progress during our stay it did not impact on our time there and we were also generously given a room credit each day to compensate which could be used on food, beverage etc. I honestly do not have a negative thing to say about the Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort. We loved it!

Fun, enjoyable, relaxe, value and safe”

people, enviorment, by the ocean

I had a terrific time staying at the hotel. I am quite a "fussy" person who travel quite a bit. With disspointment with many 5 stars hotel, but Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort, to me, is a exceptional friendly "5 Star" place that you can put "disappointment" behind. Come here, sit back, relaxe, enjoy what the hotel has set up and ready for you. Do not let the distance between the hotel and airport scared you, it's only 90 ringgits and 35 minutes sight-seeing drive. Once you get there, you can feel the different of what the hotel has been prepared for anf offer you "by heart" - the reception, the hotel enviorment, the people (staffs including the management), the facilities, the food, the ocean.......etc.. How many times in your life, especially for city people, experienced lying down on the beach, watching the sun going down the horizon. For general class of people, for the kind of affordable cost, Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort is the place to have a great vacation. Again, thanks to everybody at the hotel, providing me a great place for me and my family for our vacation. KEEP IT UP!!!

Luxurious hotel in a gorgeous setting”

The service, pool and beach

I stayed here with my wife for 2 nights after climbing Mt Kinabalu. It was the perfect way to rest my weary legs! Relaxing by the pool and at the beach was the best way to recover. There are many restaurant choices here including international (both casual and fine dining options), Japanese, Indian and local Malaysian cuisine. All are within easy walking distance of the rooms. We actually stayed in and ordered room service on the first night as there was quite a wide variety of food available on the menu and it came very promptly. The grounds are impeccable and the view of the beach is amazing. I didn't see any other resorts nearby so the only people at the beach were Shangri-La Hotel guests. I'm not sure if it's actually a private beach, but it certainly felt that way. There are even deck chairs and umbrellas setup on the beach for guests! I have stayed at a few Shangri-La hotels/resorts and the service here was up to their usual high standards. The internet is super fast unlike most hotels I've stayed at. There are also some programs available for kids so it's very family friendly. We also did a short tour to see the orangutans as there is a rehabilitation centre there (my wife loves animals!). The cost was 55 ringgit. There's also a canopy walk available for an additional 15 ringgit but we did not do it. The only minor concerns I had with this resort was that it's very far from Kota Kinabalu and the airport (almost 1 hour by taxi) so there are no shopping or eating options here other than those offered at the actual hotel. That means if you are after a cheap eat or decent shopping, look elsewhere. Also, we stayed in the Garden Wing which is very family and kid friendly. However, if you would like a quiet, romantic getaway, you are better off staying in the Ocean Wing. It's a little bit more expensive, but more secluded and I believe that the separate pool there is for Ocean Wing guests only.

The best resort we have ever stayed at:)”

A fabulous place to relax, eat well and see lots of things!

staying five nights at the shangri-la rasa ria resort was really the highlight of our whole holiday. the place was really amazing inspite of the fact that half the resort was going through a refurb while we were there. our room was complete luxury (we got upgraded to an ocean view room) and one of the nicest we have ever had at a shangri la hotel. we loved our room so much we oredered room service every night which was just delicious. all the staff were so friendly and helpful. sitting out at the pool during the day they always came around with free treats like special drinks, ice dream and nibbles. the gym at the hotel was great and we used the tennis courts everyday. we thought the breakfast was one of the best we have ever had. i would say to everyone you want to visit this resort ..... as we are definitely planning on going back!!!

Great Resort in Kota Kinabalu”

We had great 7 days in the Shangrila Rasa Ria Resort in Kota Kinabalu. The location is a little bit off (45-60 min to Airport) so it's not a recommended place if you want to discover the scenic spots on around. But it's great for beach vacation with a great beach, great swimming pools and great food. The breakfast in the Oceano Restaruant is especially great with lots of choices - for the lunch/evening there are local, international, Japanese, Italian, Indian cuisine in the resort available, the golf resort some hundred meters away also offers Korean restaurant. The food is not cheap but still reasonable compared to European prices or even Chinese prices. But you will not get the "cheap bite" as on a street food stall. We stayed in the Ocean Wing where the rooms are very spacious and you can use the Ocean Wing swimming pool as well (but we mostly used the Garden Wing Pool as there are the slides for the kids). The Garden Wing rooms also looked nice but smaller - with two kids the Ocean Wing rooms were the better choice. We travelled there beginning of October - the weather was great (around 33 C) with only one rainy day and there was no problem with sand flies as mentioned in some reviews. Staff was very friendly and helpful. There is a shuttle bus to the city - Taxi is around 120 RM to city center.

Holiday in Sabah”

Fabulous atmosphere and superb food. An excellent place to rest and rejuvenate as well as be active and involved.
A very slow check in procedure but not enough of a hassle as to spoil the experience.

Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort presents the Malaysian spirit of hospitality at its best. From the moment of arrival you feel immersed in a tropical paradise beside a beautiful ocean. Visiting the Spa located on a secluded island linked to the Resort by a walkway was a highlight. To be pampered in my own private treatment room within a walled garden with the sound of the waves in the distance was true luxury. At the Pepinos Italian restaurant, the menu was exciting and creative and the food served was as good as it sounded. Attention to detail was obvious as our party celebrated 2 birthdays during our stay and surprise birthday cakes were delivered to our rooms. Highly recommended to everyone.

relax and rejuvenate”

staff, location, variety of food

My stay at the Shangri-La's Rasa Ria Resort and Spa was overall wonderful! The location is amazing, quiet and peaceful. The staff is really lovely and works hard to make sure we have a nice experience. The buffet breakfast offers a vast range of western and asian food and they offer gluten free bread (not a wide choice but still there is some). When you sit by the pool, the staff is very attentive and makes sure you always have refreshing drinks throughout the day. A couple of things on the down side: you need to book the restaurants way in advance for dinner as they have limited capacity and get fully booked and the staff doesn't tell you this when you come in (that said whenever I was passing by the restaurants, they were supposed to be full but there were lots of tables available); they offer some teas and coffees in the room but had no peppermint tea and when I asked to have some they said they would charge me for it (they didn't in the end after discussion, but for the price of the room I thought it was a bit much!). Overall, it was very relaxing, the beach is beautiful and it is a very peaceful place. I will most certainly go back!

stuff

we stay at the shangri-la rasa ria resort for only 2 nights after moving from the nexus resort. the food at the nexus resort was so bad we had to leave. we spent nye at the shangri-la and while we where there we managed to arrange only 2 nights from the 2nd of jan. would have moved earlier if they had availability. the stuff at rasa ria are just amazing and really made our stay one to remember. they even waved us off and sang us a goodbye sound, unbelievable really. the food also didn't disappoint us. alway love staying at a shangri-la so thanks once again for a great stay.

Awesome staff, rooms but pricy”

Things I like/dislike

my whole journey with shangri-la's rasa ria resort is an unforgettable experience. during my arrival, drinks are provided during my check-in process and with a cold towel. deposit for this room is night which is a huge amount of money. when check-in process has been completed, a staff member lead me to the room that i will be staying at. the room itself is huge, with a great size of our own terrace. when i look out, there isn't much privacy for the lower level residences as we can look through their outdoor bathtub. the time that i am staying, there are some projects going on nearby which may have causes some inconveniences for some residences so i have also received a voucher for 2 to the buffet breakfast, a voucher for spa, dining or recreation and a complimentary wine. on top of that, a complimentary fruits platters also provided. i cannot complain with any thing that i have seen or served although i have some disappointment with their restaurant as they told me the wrong process of redeeming the voucher which then lead to confusion for the reception staffs. overall, everything is perfect with the money i have paid for and some awesome compliments that i have received from the hotel.

Heartfelt service from committed staff

from the moment we arrived until the morning we departed we experienced exceptional service and support from the staff at shangri -la rasa ria. the facilities were excellent from the restaurants to the pool, the spa and nature reserve. we ate at all of the resorts restaurants and were very impressed with the variety and quality of food and the service offered. the nature reserve was an added bonus, our daughter especially enjoyed being a ranger for the day - she not only learnt alot about the orangutans but had a fun time. we would highly recommend this resort for its beach location, facilities but most of all the fabulous staff

Paradise”

From the minute you arrive at the Shangri La Rasa Ria you feel welcomed by every one at the resort. Staff are friendly & happy to help. The dining facilities are excellent with a wide variety of food available. The rooms are a good size & well worth the money spent. We were impressed when we returned to our room in the evening to find our beds turned down, slippers next to the bed & mosquito buzzer placed in our room & curtains drawn. No detail has been missed at the resort, and I would definetely return to the hotel. Highlughts were being so close to all the wild life, and especially the orangutans.
The bus service to & from town supplied from the hotel - need more times to pick up from town- first pick up from the hotel is at 9am, but the return bus does not pick up until 1:15pm,so we needed to catch a taxi back to the hotel.

The hotel is an absolutely awesome place to syat. There has been no detail missed in the rooms, including the turning down of beds every night & mosquito buzzer placed in the rooms each evening. Altough the hotel is 40 mins from town, there is no real need to leave the resort as there is so many activites to do, or you can simply laze around the pool, you can make up the pace as you go. There is plenty of food choices for any budget. The staff are only too happy to help, and are always smiling & greeting the guests. The absolute highlight was being so close to the wild life, and spending time watching the orangutans which we were lucky enough to see 4 of, on our trip. We defimetely plan to revisit the Shangri- La Rasa Ria in the near future, well worth the money spent on the accomodation.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa exceeded our expectations. It was everything I hoped for and more. We had our room upgraded to the Ocean Wing and it was the best decision ever. Guests staying at the Ocean Wing get to have unlimited wine and beer from 5-6pm while enjoying the sunset. This resorts also has the best staffs, kind and very accommodating. They have I think 3 swimming pools, 2 of which are exclusive to Ocean Wing guests. The resort is a bit far from the city center, but you’ll still love every single bit of this place - from sunrise to sunset. I’d totally recommend this place to family & friends - a totally world class hotel & service.

rasa ria, it was real resting!”

lovely garden, spacious room, birds singing everywhere, cool sea breeze, perfect pool area with good food and smiling staffs! everything we expected from vacation was there. we loved orangutan watching and it was one of the best moments in that resort. their so to speak 'natural slap stick comedy' gave us a big laugh. such a friendly and cute creature they were! night folk dance of the staffs(especially bamboo dance was good!) was pretty good. free activities such as catamaran sailing, cooking class was provided by the resort, and it was good also. if i come back to kota kinabaly again, definately i'll come back to rasa ria.
too far from down town. with this far location, the resort could keep its serene calm aura, but it is still a fact that rasa ria is 45 minutes far from down town. there are not that much serious cons. small cons i found: about cooking class, the cooking demo table was too high so we couldnt see much what's going in the pot. and also, the staff was grabbing not only food ingredient but enrollment sheet and pencil by turns. also i can't miss commenting on the music of coast. very modern interior, very nice table setting. but the music was poooooor. cynically sounding electronic music never match with romantic dinner. after that meaningless music, a band was on the stage and their jazz... i didnt expect too much but they make too many mistakes.

we went to kota kinabalu just because of rasa ria. its natural setting fronting beautiful sea and little orangutan reserve was quite attractive to us. and we are totally satisfied with what they provided for us. when we arrived, 2 musical players started performing malaysian music with something like xylophone and welcame us. food was also good, and lots of local cusine made it superb. dont miss the food stall style buffet at dinner! i super-loved lotties there. the best area we liked is pool area. there were enough shade around the pool and all kinds of tropical trees were planted. we liked the sunbed there, too. the only con about the pool is that water slide is so small. we spent most of our time around the pool. for my husband, catamaran sailing was the best part. even though we didnt know how to sail it, a very experienced staff in the marine ectivies center called himself as 'captain' and owing to his kindness, we could sail away until i shouted out 'came back!' :) it was thrilling was we enjoyed the whole view of the resort. i can say all staffs there was very gentle and nice!!

Most relaxing five days”

The rainforest room was clean and spacious. The resort facilities including pool and nature reserve and restaurants were all of top standard and the staff were all friendly and extremely helpful

My friend and I stayed at rasa ria for a relaxing resort holiday and well did we achieve it. Impeccable service from the staff, lots of daily activities on offer. We did the village bike ride with Steeley and it was a lot of fun. Great guide. Only wished we had been there to do the market bike ride! Couldn't fault the food at breakfast or at any of the restaurants. The teppan-yaki is a must. Overall a great stay at Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort.

Wonderful stay at Rasa Ria”

Great staff; friendly and attentive. Beautiful room and landscape. Great food and variety. Great Spa. Nature Preserve with baby orangutan viewing.
Restaurant service can be quite slow. Resort was very full/crowded, especially the pool areas. Lots of kids/families. Far from the center of KK, have to take a taxi and its about 20 min.

We had a great time at the Rasa Ria. The staff were wonderful, attentive, friendly, and really made the stay enjoyable. As a couple, we enjoyed a romantic getaway, but note, its a very kid friendly place, tons of families, so pick another resort if you don't want to be surrounded by that. However, we did the couples spa treatment, and it was truly great. The restaurants were 5 star, really good variety of items, and reasonably priced, since it is Malaysia. The highlight for us was going to their Nature Preserve to see the baby orangutans-a must see!! Check-in took a while, but they served us welcome drinks and apologized for the wait. One of the buffet restaurants (can't remember the name, but its right near the pool by the Garden Wing) that also served a la carte items took literally 45 minutes to bring us pasta and a quiche! And the restaurant wasn't even full because it was before the dinner time rush! We complained b/c we were going to miss a Spa appointment if we had stayed around for dessert. We told them we wanted a complimentary dessert and would come back later that night to get it, and the manager happily complied. Also note, there is nothing around the resort vicinity to see, its quite far and secluded from KK. The closest shopping areas are 20 min away by taxi. So you will likely stay at the resort the whole time.

Relaxing stay in the nature”

Location, facilities, room comfort

We went to Shagri- La Rasa Ria in August 2015 to celebrate our 2nd year anniversary. The hotel is 30minutes drive from Kota Kinabalu, in a reclusive location featuring a very picturesque beach and forest. The resort has all sort of features and attractions to attract families with kids and honeymooners, such as horse riding, spa, golf, orangutan watching, etc. The resort also offers a good variety of restaurants. Overall the experience was very nice and pleasant.

wonderful stay in Borneo!”

The Orrangutan sanctuary, the Teppanyaki restaurant and the wonderful rooms

We had a wonderful four night stay at the Shangri-La's Rasa Ria resort. The Teppanyaki restaurant was a class evening of wonderful food and entertainment, and we all had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Without a doubt, the rooms in the Ocean Wing resort are exceptional, and the outdoor bath overlooking the sea made for a perfect setting - especially in the evening with the rain thundering down around us - an amazing way to experience the outskirts of the rain forest! The Orangutan sanctuary will delight visitors of all ages, and was particularly good at explaining the conservation work that goes behind the reintergration of the animals. this resort would be perfect for couples or families - it is suited well to both, and very well laid out so as to maximise the experience for each group thank you all!

Rasa Ria Shangri La ”

friendly helpful & attentive staff, excellent service, great food, clean beach, orangutans in the nature reserve which is part of the resort.
if being picky then entertainment at night could be more varied

You cannot fault the service at this resort - the staff are wonderful. Highlight was a visit to the orangutan babies in the nature reserve which is part of the hotel (saves a trip to Sepilok), lovely beach & great food. We were at the Rasa Ria for 5 days & wanted an isolated relaxing break but if you want to see more of Kota Kinabalu then the location of this resort is quite far away from the city centre - although there is a shuttle bus service. Only one thing if I was being picky is that the entertainment at night could be more varied. We found there wasn't much to do after dinner. That said the kitchen band who play on Monday nights are wonderful & better than some of the professional music acts.

wonderful sunset and food”

Touching hospitality and beautiful nature..

I stayed there for 2 nights after staying at downtown hotel in Kota Kinabalu. I think staying for half on downtown and half at Rasa Ria were very very good choice. Because it takes 40 min from Rasa Ria to downtown by taxi and it costs 80RM. After getting into Rasa Ria, you could stay and enjoy there enough. I definitely want to go there again.
