        “Best Ryokan Stay”

If you are planning to visit in Shibu Onsen or the nearby Snow Monkey Mountain, Kokuya must be your place of accommodation. Although I stayed only for 1 night, it didn't felt enough because I was so impressed with bot just how well their ryokan and rooms were kept, but their service and care towards guests as well. Check in: I was one a few guests whom reached the ryokan early, just before check-in time. Their staff ushered me to take a sit first and unwind, showing me pamphlets of the nearby Snow Monkey Mountain, letting me know of what I should take note as I'm heading there. I was then introduced to Jenny, a staff at Kokuya whom speaks perfect English and had no issues communicating with me. Jenny proceeded to take down my details and asked for my meal timing preference before showing me to my room. I then had my height roughly estimated by her for my yukata measurement which she brought to me immediately. Following her to my room, she briefed me the restaurant/meal location as well at the ryokan's onsen while on the way. Upon reaching my room, she handed me the master key to visit the 9 public baths around Shibu Onsen (which i had no prior knowledge of them) as well as educating me in participating in the 9 public baths. She also taught me how to wear the yukata which she chose for me as well as informing me that my tatami mattress would be set up when I am having my dinner. Check in went super smooth throughout thanks to Jenny! Room: I chose the Japanese Style Room with Open Air bath. Needless to say, the room was huge and extremely specious. Everything was prepared neatly and everything was kept clean. Jenny showed me the water adjustment for my own private onsen and warned that both the private and 9 public baths were hot so just be careful. The toilet itself was automatic and there was a remote control at the side although it's all in Japanese, I had to Google Translate some of the functions to know what I was going to press. All and all, the room was perfect. Meals: I was served a 9-course Izakaya dinner at Kokuya. This dinner was nothing but superb, being prepared by both their chef as well as their kitchen staff and carefully brought in by the hotel staff and everything tasted delicious (I was super well- fed that evening). Jenny was once again there to guide and inform me of the dishes as well as the ingredients of each dish. Occasionally, she'll check in and ask if the meal is going well. Having my meal alone, I could hear guests from other tables how satisfied they were at Kokuya's service. Their meal staff will really stop what they are doing and take time to speak to you, answering whatever questions you have (regarding Shibu Onsen/nearby temples/Snow Monkey Park/your stay at their ryokan) and ensuring you are at your best comfort. Check out: Checking out was quick, handing my key only. I thing that surprised me thoroughly was when I exited my room and headed to the front desk, their staff had already arranged the shoes for every hotel guest for wearing (see photo). This service was really top notch and their staff really went the extra mile. Overall: My stay in Kokuya was nothing but fantastic and it exceeded my expectations beyond anything. Service, check. Room cleanliness and comfort, check. Ryokan that has onsen and is conveniently located near the 9 public onsens of Shibu Onsen, check. Just can't get any better than this. Special thanks to the staff for taking care of me and answering any doubts I had regarding temple visiting around Shibu Onsen and surrounding areas. Big massive shoutout to Jenny for serving me throughout my trip in Kokuya (you were great!).

“Perfect onsen getaway with top notch hospitality”

Room : Very clean with complete amenities traditional room. If you prefer "modern" rooms you might think their rooms are old, but we prefer the old style better for that ryokan charm. Food : The breakfast and dinner became our highlight for this trip (after the onsen of course!) I never heard about Shinshu beef before, it was BETTER than Kobe beef in my opinion!! The only regret I have is they served us Nagano Apple juice for breakfast and I forgot to drink it (I mean, there were a hundred meals in front of me...) I regret it so much... Nagano apple is so famous so PLEASE don't forget to drink your juice, people! (lol) Staffs : Very helpful and lovely. All of them speak English very well. They were able to help for any inquiries you have. Also the hotel have free shuttle if you want to go see the Snow Monkeys. Onsen : There are 6 private onsens in the ryokan (on top of your private in-room onsen if you pick those rooms). They have digital reservation system for each onsens so you won't share the bath with other guest (and no need to queue, except when they remove the reservation system in off-peak times). I tried almost all of them, they are very very nice (and you get to adjust the temperature). Also in the town itself there are 9 public onsen you should try (trust me, you will be cooked well-done at the end of this trip lol) Overall, this ryokan and the whole onsen town trip is very worth the money spent. It is on the expensive side but I will 100% recommend this to anyone want to try foreigner-friendly ryokan-onsen experience. 古久屋の皆さん、温かいおもてなしをありがとうございました!

“It’s like stepping back in time! ”

My teenage son and I had a one night stay at this lovely ryokan on our way to visit the Jigokudani snow monkey park. There is a free shuttle pickup at Yudanaka station (also with shuttle drop off at the snow monkey park and transfer of our luggage to a cafe right by Yudanaka station the next day - very convenient!). We were told the ryokan is 400 years old, and its windy passages and lower insulation in the rooms reminded us of its history. The staff is terrific, meals were delicious and varied (included in our very reasonable room rate), but the stars of the show were the multiple private onsen baths scattered throughout the ryokan, all of which could be reserved for private use (there was low occupancy the night we were there, so no need to reserve in advance - just show up and change the sign outside from vacant to occupied). My favorites were the open air baths (Issa and its smaller cousin, Kassei), but I also enjoyed the ambience of the wooden tubs in Fukuroku. The ryokan is well situated, right between public onsens 9 and 1, although to be honest, the town of Shibu Onsen is so small and quaint that almost any of the ryokans have an excellent location. They provide yukatas and outside coverings (haori) for the winter, socks, geta (wooden clogs), and a wooden key that allows you access into all the public onsens, so you are all set to go onsen hopping in traditional clothing. Note that even though I had bathed in multiple of our ryokan’s onsens, I had to check out at least one of the public onsens. It was a worthwhile adventure, although much too hot for my liking (I never was able to get in!). Walking in the snow along the cobblestone street in our getas took a little getting used to, but both my son and I got the hang of it, and the beauty of our stroll at night with a light dusting of snow made it all the more memorable. The only drawback Iexperienced was that our room was very cold, especially the bathroom, despite the fact that I had turned the heat up to 29 degrees Celsius. Under the duvet covers, you are fine, but be prepared to be jolted by the cold when you wake up in the winter and pry yourself out of your cozy little nest! I took another onsen bath in our room’s open air onsen in the morning, and that thankfully warmed me enough. Other than that, the stay was perfect. There was a Geisha show in the lobby after dinner that we were originally going to watch, but we were too tired from travel and jet lag to make it through an hour long performance. Definitely worth a visit. There are more modern appearing ryokans in town, but I personally preferred the feel of being transported back in time during our stay at Shibu Onsen Kokuya.

“Amazing experience with access to numerous baths”

The room is lovely, service is excellent and well-thought out every step of the way. Staff were very nice and helpful, you have to call/book a request for the check-out shuttle bus. The best part were definitiely the food and private onsens Shibu Kokuya provides, as well as having access to Shibu Onsen. We stayed two nights and they switched up our dinner and breakfast for both days which was a lovely touch, and every meal left us feeling more than satisfied and full. Their many private onsens were clean, quiet, and a great experience spend together as a couple. Would recommend!

“A friendly and Clean Onsen to Visit!”

I was really pleased on how beutiful this Onsen was. They have a shuttle service from the Station to the Hotel and they also help you to bring your luggage to a storage with Keylocks a few steps of the station. They have internal and external Onsen all super clean and nice and the food was delicious. A Big thanks to all the staff as they are super friendly and also provided all the info we needed to visit the Monkey Park. As a plus, there is a Bar next door if you would like a drink after dinner! :)
