A great place to stay if you want to feel the experience of living within a Hutong area. It's in a very safe area and the people living in these Hutongs are extremely friendly. Only a 5-minute walk to the lake and another 10 minutes to many restaurants and bars. And within walking distance to a metro stop which gets you to Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City within 30 minutes. And the staff were excellent.....all speaking English and very helpful. Special thanks go out to Wendy, Michael, and Ella.
Cozy boutique hotel in quaint hutong”
Stayed here for 4 nights and quite enjoyed the fact that it's located walking distance to the lake, as well as lots of shops and an assortment of attractions. It's a bit of a walk to the closest train station, but nothing too strenuous. The room was spacious and clean, the bed comfortable. Breakfast provided a variety of dishes from western to local Chinese. Overall, would recommend.
Best Hutong hotel in BJ for comfort/value/experience”
Beijing has a lot of Hutong hotels nowadays, but very few do much more beyond dressing up old courtyards with copious ammounts of replica Qing dynasty relics. The Shadow Art Hotel is the best of all worlds - Great inner-city hidden location close to all the best attractions Beijing has on offer, and an actual real cultural / artistic experience with real people perserving the art of folk story telling in the old hutong streets. Stay in the Kang / rural Chinese bed style rooms for added experience. Beautiful interior decoration, art, rooms, etc.
Cute boutique hotel”
Interesting little place set in the hutongs. Good to stay if you like to walk around the lake and to the other hutongs. Bad if you need to take taxis. Loved the shadow show and the friendly and helpful staff. Small enough to make you feel like part of the family there.
Staff with excellent service and tasty breakfast”
Staff with excellent service. All of them can speak English well. Although the wifi and data cannot access in the room, it might be a good time to enjoy the view and communicate with the staff. The art show are really excellent. The breakfasts are really good. No oily fried rice and noodle, all are western meals with different sandwiches and hamburgers and cakes. But the room without any safety lock. It might be a bit worry, especially the hotel is located in a small streets with lots of local old residents.
Worthy of 9+, few Hutongs hotels have it better”
Great stay, beautifully designed with great service, BUT please change your airport service! Not a reflection on the hotel, but the company used for the airport transfer for horrendous. Better to take a cab.
A little overpriced ”
I think this hotel has a very nice interior design but the breakfast is too simple and not so tasty. Location-wised, it locates nearby Hou Hai lake which is a must-go place around that area. So I compensate my disappointment about the room size and the quality of breakfast with the location. Overall I think this hotel is nice but a little overpriced.
Welcoming hotel with a personal touch”
While the hotel was a little hard to find, the first impression was outstanding. The staff was so helpful in getting us checked in, updating us on the sights to eat/see/drink and the shadow puppet show in the evening was quite an interesting and unique experience. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves there but getting a taxi who knows how to get there is indeed a challenge.
A TRUE GEM OF BEIJING”
This place is incredible. If you have traveled much in China, you have undoubtedly run across a few "attempts" (or copied) at doing something really well , that just doesn't quite hit the mark, this place is a model of authenticity and great execution. You can clearly see that they have payed attention to all the right details and created something special. It's location makes it feel like a special secret that you are somehow privy to know. If you are traveling in Beijing, you have to check this place out. As most of these things go, this is purely my opinion. With that said, I am sure there are greater hotels out there, but I haven't experienced it yet.
Great, comfy and friendly hotel!”
The breakfast was the highlight of each day! Western and Chinese dishes sure to please anyone!! The shadow art show was an interesting bonus. Beds were comfy and rooms well stocked with necessities. Would definitely stay again!!
This was our first trip to China and this hotel came highly recommended. Firstly, it is located in the middle of a 'hutong' or village, and very accessible within walking distance to the popular Houhai lakeside area (for Chinese cuisines and shopping), if you are looking to soak up Beijing culture. We walked a lot through the small roads and not once did we felt unsafe, even at night. Second, with regards to the hotel itself, the staff were super efficient and went out of their way to make our stay pleasant, from booking taxis to helping us be translators between ourselves and the driver to wherever we want to go. The standard room was a little small but they were clean and comfortable. They also offerred shadow art performances 3 times a week for free at the premise, and it was really entertaining. It's rare to find hotels these days that ties art as part of their themes these days. To sum it up, the place is charming and comfortable, great location in the heart of Beijing, staff was excellent, and I'll go back there again if I ever visit Beijing again for a holiday.
Overall is good except the location”
Room is clean but the smell from kitchen will get inside the room in the morning. Taxi not willing to drive until doorstep of the hotel because the road is too small. Good thing is hotel have few bicycles where you can borrow and ride to Houhai and other places.
Love the hotel!”
Wasn't easy to find at first, but after knowing the location, it's pretty convenient. The best part is still the interior. it's cosy and staffs r friendly. I love how this place has activities like painting workshop and shadow performance for their guest.
Best hotel ever”
I rate this the best tourist hotel I've ever stayed at. It's off the tourist trail, away from the huge eight lane highways, down a hutong among the locals. There are a few drawbacks - hard to find good food and a fair bit of walking required, but everything else was great. The room lacks chairs and a desk, just a low window seat, so I had to use the wash stand in the bathroom as my work surface. Best thing - I accidentally rolled on my glasses on the bed and broke the frame. Emergency. I had no spares. The desk guy said to leave it with him, he would cycle to a place, and true to his word at 6.30pm they were back as good as new. Cost? "No charge, sir." Wow. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone. I haven't even mentioned the shadow art performance bit. No dining/restaurant - breakfast but that's all. Only two floors, but stairs can be a problem for some. Overall, 100% review.
Stay was very pleasant. Location was fairly easy to find, although a decent map is required. Staff were pleasant and helpful, and can speak a bit of English if required. Breakfast buffet was actually pretty decent, with enough variety. Only complaint was the room we were given was two single beds instead of a double, and the room itself was very dark. Also the wifi was sometimes troublesome to connect to. The hotel fitout is quite nice and it's comfortable to sit in their lobby area.
Fantastic location, staff and hotel”
This place if fabulous all around. LOCATION: The hutong is beautiful and full of character. And it wasn't dirty. The hotel is located about 7 mins walking to the quiet part of the lake, around which you'll find restaurants and shops. If you're a beer drinker, check out The Zone, which has a great selection of beers from around the world. ROOM: We opted for a more traditional room. It was VERY small -- width was the size of the bed, which was perfectly fitted into the wall. There wasn't a real window, but a round one that overlooked the sitting area of the hotel. It didn't bother us because it's quite bright out there. The room was cozy and for the most part clean. My only suggestion would be for a cleaning around the mattress. There were tons of dust bunnies. Bathroom updated. STAFF: The staff was fantastic -- especially Jocelyn who went out of her way to help us out with everything. Most of the staff speaks English. FOOD: Breakfast was great. Small selection, but covered all the bases -- eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, cereal, ect. There's no other food options besides breakfast, but you can order in from a local restaurant, which we did two nights. Everything was really good and dishes were about 15RMB apiece. ARRIVING: We arrived via bullet train from Xi'An and grabbed a taxi from the train station. Using the hotel directions, the driver was able to find the hotel no problem. And even managed to navigate the narrow alleyways to drop us off right in front. It cost 43RMB from the train station. Make sure your driver uses the meter! It costs about 150RMB to get to the airport. The hotel will charge you 400RMB. PUPPET SHOW: The shows are on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We saw two different shows, and both were fantastic. Nice way to see a part of Chinese history without having to leave the comfort of your hotel. Would recommend this place to anyone and would stay here again in a heartbeat.
The room was a little small, but clean, and the location was excellent. It's be a little difficult to find since it's in an alley, but it's neat walk through the old alleyway. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Our schedule was too tight to see the shadow art show. The variety of breakfast could be improved.
Great location. Lovely staff. ”
We stayed for three nights and found the place to be an ideal spot to explore Beijing from. The hotel staff were very friendly and most accommodating. A real gem. If in Beijing again I would certainly stay here.
A different experience”
The friendly and helpful staff made the stay memorable. We had some problem connecting to Wi-Fi and informed the staff about it. One of the staff brought into the room a router and installed it. We were really surprised that the staff went out of his way just to ensure that our needs were met. Breakfast was served at the lobby. After breakfast, it was good to engage in small talk with the staff. One of them also gave us a comprehensive explanation about Shadow Art. I have stayed in boutique hotels but Shichahai Shadow Art Hotel brought our stay to another level- the warmth and sincerity of the staff made us feel really 'at home'. To the staff of Shichahai Shadow Art, KUDOs to you...
Great little hotel in the hearth of the Hutongs”
We loved our stay at the Shadow Art Hotel. We chose it for it's location in the Shichahai district and we will return here for any future trips to Beijing. Lots to see and do in the area, subway station is within easy walking distance for access to other tourist sites. Staff was always very helpful. Bikes are available for rental, this is a great way to visit the area.
