An Enjoyable Stay”

I had a good time at Silverfern, the staff were super helpful and friendly, bedroom was nice and clean with other interesting guests. The kitchen was large with good appliances and equipment. Toilets and showers were clean and well maintained. Location is good near main bus terminal and Sky Tower. This seems to be one of the best hostels in Auckland.

Such a nice stay”

I stayed at here for 2 nights. The place wasn't difficult to find, and it is near to the Intercity bus terminal, lots of restaurants shops at there too within 5-10 min walking distance. The staff were very helpful as they will ask us either we need anything or not. The room is clean too. A lot of facilities in the guesthouse, they even have TV room and computers for guests to use it. Their shared bathroom and kitchen was big enough. Will recommend this place to other friends if they go to Auckland next time.

Could be perfect but..”

...but the way they handle the reservations sucks. The discount price on internet is only "usable" once. Meaning that if you want to extend one day (like a lot of backpackers do) you gotta pay the full price, they won't let you book online again to get the discount because you're not considered a new guest anymore. And also they add a charge when you pay credit card. Apart from that the hostel is great, the dorms are a little sad but everything is functional and showers are amazing such as the kitchen. It was a good stay overall but a little warning before about the way you guys handle booking would be nice.

Comfortable, clean and quiet.”

Comfortable, clean and quiet.

This is what I think a backpackers should be like. The bathrooms and kitchen were clean and spacious. The rooms quiet and comfortable. Good internet, friendly staff and a lovely peaceful atmosphere. It's a bit of an uphill walk from town but we'll worth the effort. We were charged a $10.60 fee because we booked an extra night online while staying at the hostel. I didn't know about this rule. Also staff wanted to charge us $20 for proof that we were staying there (for opening our NZ bank account) otherwise excellent value.

Stay somewhere else if you can”

It was OK after the initial shock of the first night, but I still wouldn't recommend staying here. The staff weren't friendly and they always looked miserable. The kitchen and bathrooms were gross, and they charge you for as many things as they can. You have to pay $2 for the privilege of using a mug! The management leaves whiny, passive-aggressive notes everywhere. The beds were terrible and the other backpackers were always very loud, even after midnight. Oh, and they charge for wifi despite clearly advertising "free wifi!" on many websites. After staying in the nearby Haka Lodge the previous month, where I had a fantastic experience for the same price, there's no reasons for hostels to still be like Silverfern. You can provide a quality, clean, and friendly hostel experience to your guests and still make a profit - Silverfern needs to realize this.
