Definitely one to recommend a definite 10”

Friendly owners, food and atmosphere

We really enjoyed our time at the Slagon homestay. The food really was the best Malaysian food we had during the holiday. The owners are really friendly and helpful and although the place is outside Ranau and possibly difficult to find if you are using your own transport, we phoned the owners and were picked up from Ranau. Those with their own transport can phone and get more detailed directions, there are also several signs to help guide you in too. The following day we shared a vehicle with other guests to Kinabalu park(70 MYR for the vehicle) and from there got the bus back to Ranau (5MYR) and negotiated with a local taxi driver to take us to poring and then back to Slagon homestay (50MYR) so the location was not a problem for us. A nice tranquil getaway owned by a really friendly family in a peaceful location.

Unexpected gem!”

Relaxing ambience, amazing food and very clean

Slagon Homestay is a short drive off the main road, and when we reached, a wonderful sight met our eyes. The communal area is beautifully built over a gushing stream, with WiFi, TV and books. The rooms were simple and very clean (no mosquitoes, ants and especially no cockroaches!) Clean bathrooms with hot water showers. The best meal throughout our trip, including KK town at a nice restaurant, came from a dinner at Slagon Homestay. Very fresh vegetables and fruits. Our hosts were exceptionally kind to us, providing us with a hot meal after we had arrived, cold, hungry and exhausted, in spite of the odd hour. Also very helpful with tour information, so we managed to see everything we wanted to. Would definitely stay here again, and recommend to others :)

Relaxing and authentic”

they make you feel part of the community and get out of their way to make you feel at home, great home cooked meals

We had booked 2 nights at Slagon Homestay, but ended up staying an extra night. They picked us up from town when we called, were very helpful when we booked our trip up Mt. Kinabalu last minute from their place and just tried to help out whenever we needed something. She even went out the pick some guava leaves when we weren´t feeling well. The rooms were simple but clean and the terrace they had was a great spot to just hang out and relax all day after a long day of travel/ climbing the mountain. We would recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience more than just being a tourist and who´s seeking to getting to know Malaysian culture.

Peace and Tranquility”

Clean rooms. Great Value. Very Peaceful.

The stay here is really fantastic if you like nature and want to get away from hectic city life. Bring lots of books to read. There is wifi in the lounge and contact reception staff beforehand if you would like them to cook you breakfast or dinner. There are surprisingly little mosquitoes here and no ants in the room, that sort of thing. Shower facilities, air con and fan all work well. you may also drive into Ranau town to grab food and mingle with the locals. Very little English is spoken in town so just speak clearly, slowly and thin your accent if possible. One major problem was getting to this hotel. Best ask hotel staff for a map even before you get to Kota Kinabalu. GPS does not work here and there are no maps to buy from shelves in petrol kiosks along the way. If it gets dark before you make it to Slagon, ring the hotel and ask them to come pick you up. Have a great stay.

Peace of mind”

This homestay is definitely my go-to place if you want that peace and quiet away from the city. It's not that far from Ranau town either though i wouldn't say it's a walking distance. The road isn't lit hence it would be very dark at night if you'd like to go on foot. Nonetheless, the bed is comfortable, the room is cold even without turning on the A/C. Water heater is installed too in the bathroom. there's a lounge area where you can just enjoy the serenity. i'd highly recommend this place. Cheers

Perfect for retreat”

landscape, entertainment hall and price

this homestay is perfect for retreate. I was planning for perfect weekend rest at ranau after long weekday of work and i get it here. There room is not fancy or spacious but it is not important as you will feel more than comfortable outside your room. You can rest at the common area watching television or socializing with other guest in the entertainment hall.

Far but satisfying”

Cheap, decent room size, peaceful

a real value for money. the staffs was very friendly, helpful and highly accommodating. room and bedsheets were clean and smelled nice. the bathroom was also clean. basically the rooms are all well-maintained. the sound of the little creek was really soothing and it gave the whole area a peaceful ambience. too bad we can't jump into it :). the common resting/eating area is a good place to enjoy the fresh air while watching tv and drinking tea/coffee from the self-service tea/coffee making facility. despite being located inside a village, we were surprised at how secluded and quiet this homestay was. my only gripe was the dogs. i don't fancy having dirty and smelly dogs moving about the common area, though i suspect it was because some guest forgot to close the gate at the entrance. if you wish for the homestay to cook, don't forget to inform them earlier so that they can prepare the fresh ingredients.

Village Stay”

More than satisfied for the money spent on this room. Very peaceful, relaxing and laid back stay while you are here. Suitable for family with kids,a playing open field available near car park. Although no breakfast provided the dining area was setup well for guests to relax and enjoy food. NOTE: Own or rental car is absolutely necessary and if you really want cooling weather better to stay in Kundasang since this home-stay is in Ranau!

Nice homestay experience”

Location, price, well kept grounds

This was a great way to explore Mt. Kinabalu and the surrounding area. Very helpful staff and a very comfortable place to stay. Rooms are pretty basic with lizards and cockroaches willing to pay a visit if you aren't vigilant at keeping them out. But that isn't because it's dirty but rather because you are truly in the countryside. So we didn't mind the wildlife because we knew we were staying in the wild. Would recommend renting a car to make getting around the area easier as well.

Great staff and very helpful driver. We drove to the Poring hotspring to do the canopy walk and went find the rafflesia. Great day i had. Food wasnt amazing but ok. I dont have any complian cos the people there are just so nice and friendly. Shower didnt work so I needed to change room. The room is alittle dated but clean. Very basic no frill.

good and reasonable priced home stay for vacation for family with children. The kitchen is big and the facility is ok. Love the environment especially for kit where they can feed the fish. Made to feel so welcome”

Friendly hosts, amazing meal, relaxing location

Our hosts went out of their way to make us feel at home. The communal lounge / dining area is set on deck over a flowing stream and is a relaxing place to sit, read, watch TV or chat with our hosts or other guests. Our evening meal (must be pre-arranged) was amazing - the best meal we had during our stay in Sabah. The fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden at dinner and breakfast were full of flavour. Great homestay experience - highly recommended. Downsides are it is a bit difficult to locate (make sure you watch for the signs)and don't expect the bed of a 5 star resort or you will be disappointed (it is budget accommodation and great value for money).

Friendly staff/host

Comfortable quiet place but not good for young children to sleep in. No lights at evening time or during storm. Overall is ok with much friendlier staff. We booked 3 nights but left earlier due to heavy storm so had a chance for a short trek at Kinabalu National Park. Unfortunately this place was within walking distance to nearby shop because of incorrect information of its location!

Peaceful, Nice, Bad Location

This is not a hotel, just like a resort or homestay with rooms. Location is very remote in a village, if you don't have a transport, you might face difficulty in finding the hotel and the public transport do not pass by to the hotel area. In my case, luckily i had rent a mobile as they were five of us. The distance of this hotel to Kinabalu park is about 10 km. Do not check-in late night as the area will be very dark, you might miss out the sign board that leads you to the hotel. We had requested the hotel to provide us with some breakfast (we stated that in the booking remark). U need to pay about RM6-7 per person for simple breakfast. This price is reasonable as you don't have to think about finding your food the next day you wake up in the morning whatmore with the hotel's location quite isolated from other ammenities like eateries. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the hotel staff told us they were unable to provide the breakfast because they had unpurposedly missed out our request. So, the next day, we checked out very fast because we need to fill our empty stomach and can't wait to searching for the nearby restaurant (which was about 5 km from the hotel, located at the town). Other than that, overall we had a pleasant stay. The hotel is nice, the ambient is calm and very natural.
