Cheating with the price and rude staff”
I've made a booking which said "Your booking has been paid in full" and "Included in price: Hotel tax and service fees". When I came to the place the receptionist said that there was "another tax" to pay. When I made the booking there was nothing saying about other payment which were not included. I tried to say that if there are more payment that are not included it should have been clearly stated before I decide to book and make payment. But the receptionist just rudely told me to go away!
Good for Stay”
The location is near to Kitaoji subway station which only took about 8 minutes by walking The guest house is in a narrow path but it was easy to find. The bed is comfortable. The guest house have 1 shower, 1 squat toilet. I was hoping for toilet with bidet but maybe it was their guest house concept. It was decorated with 80's vibe. I had a good sleep. The bed was so comfortable. Had a tea in the morning. The room was quiet. So it was a nice 1 night stay for me.
Small World is a vintage styled wooden japanese house. The host has its own charactor haha! I stayed in Small World Guest house for two nights. The guests can cook and talk in the common rooms full of old vinyl records and books. Just one thing is i couldnt sleep well at night because of the conditioning is not cool enough for me in 6 ppl female dorm. Others are all good for backpack travellors in budget price. It is about 30 sth mins away from Kyoto station by bus no.9. But it is good to you to travel northern part of Kyoto.
Cleaning and tidy”
It is very good that Ground and bed are Cleaning and Tidy. Washroom and refrigerator are enough, Cleaning and Tidy too. Location is little far only. Curtain for window is lack on my bed side, so the light at night from outside and sun at morning affected me. To sum up, I am very satisfied and will come again.
Good VfM option ”
Far from the city centre but easily accessible by bus. Also makes a good base for exploring north Kyoto. Signs in the guesthouse would have been useful - it's like a maze in there and I got lost several times.
Too cold for stay during cold weather”
The shower room is too cold as the top part of one of the doors is not enclosed so you will get cold wind blowing into the room when you are changing your clothes. Only recommended to those who like cold wind. Besides that, it is slightly far from Kyoto Station too.
Too cold for winter”
Not recommended for cold weather as the room heater not really warm maybe because of japanese style wooden room. Toilet and shower is outside are too cold. Luckily got bed warmer. Room too dark, lighting not enough. Overall ok.
fantastic experience ”
Come if u want to stay away the crowds city and like transitional or old things And it's convenience to go besides temples just on foot. Highly recommend discovering interesting coffee or tea shops, old buildings in district on foot.
Loved our private room!”
We really enjoyed our stay here. Definitely a great place to spend some nights if you want a traditional tatami style room. There was little atmosphere because we stayed during a quiet time, but we were happy relaxing in our room or sitting in our private porch area when it was raining all day. The 3 private rooms had their own shower, sink, kettle and fridge, so it was like having them to ourselves. There's also a seperate kitchen for the everyone to use. Staff were nice enough, were there if needed and were friendly when you spoke to them. Perhaps a bit far from the centre but the bus system is great in kyoto and there's plenty to see nearby anyway. Overall would stay here again!
It's very cool to live in traditional Japanese wooden house!”
I really like this hostel with antique beauty. Living in traditional Japanese wooden house is a special experience. It only takes 2 minutes walking to the bus stop and near to 嘯月（No.1 sweets awarded by Tabelog, 2016). It's a good choice if you stay in 西陣.
Look raw but indeed refined in details”
It has a lot of small details like heater in the shower room, a cherry blossom tree, air conditioner to make you free comfortable. Better than I expected. Location is Okay, 30 minutes by bus from centre area yet is really close to bus stop.
For an old Japanese style guest house, the room and environment as a whole is really clean. The bathroom is great, and the room even have air-conditioner, heating blanket and water boiler. The place of the hotel is hard to find, since the map provided is not detailed enough, but it's really a quiet and nice place, suitable for experiencing Japanese lifestyle. Definitely consider coming back next time.
Memorable Stay, Love it”
I thought it was small when I just look from the front door. But amazingly found out there are so many turns inside the house that made more rooms.Traditional, wooden and antique feel house, so much to treasure hunt. Love it!
Far from Downtown, Suitable for Long Stay”
This is a very traditional Japanese house, feel like full of history while staying at here. If you have a very short stays in Kyoto, this place will be not recommended, because all the tourist attractions are not in walking distance. However, if you have a long stay and would like to try a relaxing Japanese style local life, this maybe a good place for you. However, the room, toilets, and the small garden are very clean, just cleanliness of the bathroom need to be upgraded. And a friendly reminder, this guest house is not suitable for super tall or big-size friends.
Great Atmosphere and creaky doors”
Finding the hotel was difficult because the map was wrong. But when I found it, at midnight, I still got friendly-enough service, a full tour of the place in English and a nice warm bed. It was in a residential-ish area and appeared to be a Japanese home with bunkbeds, so if you would like a semi-authentic experience with the creaking sliding doors (which will disturb your sleep) this is definitely the place. Great value for money and good location. Only a 10 minute walk from the kitaoji bus terminal which gives you complete access to the city for cheap (500 yen/day).
This was the coldest place I have ever stayed in. However, there were plenty of blankets for the bed and I slept warm. I am 70+ and in late November, the temperature has fallen and my old bones noticed it. BUT, the experience of staying in this home was worth every second I was there. It was a wonderful atmosphere that I would not have had if I had chosen a Holiday Inn. I am one happy person who cannot forget having stayed at Small World. P.S. There were space heaters in the rooms.
One of the cheapest hotel in Japan ”
This hostel is maybe one of the cheapest in Japan. beds are not so large but actually clean. There are so many other traveller there, and i could exchange the information about Kyoto, The hostel was actually japanese house and i could enjoy it so much. Maybe there is more suitable for foreign tourists rather than Japanese.
the a.c only works at night and is turned off as soon as the sun is up. And the ac is not that good. Also be-careful of bugs. I have never seen such huge bug in my entire life. The bathroom and toilet is very neat and clean but you have to wait a long time cuz there are many people using it.Honestly, it was not the worth the money at all. We didn't get proper sleep.
Wonderful stay if you're travelling alone”
It was a great experience. The staff prepared everything you needed.
