Stayed in habour room. Place is clean and cosy. Room is spacious for 2. Bed had a electric heater which was very much appreciated. Toilet is clean and bright. Room had a fantastic view. You can see kangeroos after sunset. Common kitchen is well equipped with pots and pans as well as basic cooking condiments - oil, salt, pepper. 15 min drive to melba gully where you can see glow worms at night. Enjoyed my 1 night stay. Will definitely choose southern anchorage retreat again!
Thanks Ada, Glad you enjoyed your room. Harbour is a great value room for the night- clean, well co-ordinated with excellent views. Throw in the complimentary breaky and its understandable that it's pretty popular and great value. After something more luxurious and private then our cottages are the go- so our rooms can cater to all the different needs. All have great views and nature. Welcome back anytime- and I'd suggest a cottage stay if 2 nights or more- as there is so much to see and do in the area and our cottages are fabulous value. Thanks, Drew
Beautiful & peaceful family-run retreat”
Southern Anchorage Retreat is set in the hills, surrounded by beautiful and peaceful natural environment. Owner Andrew is friendly and helped to recommend some surrounding great places to explore. Our "Coastal" room is clean and spacious enough for a couple. It has a balcony and bathroom with a great view. The bathroom has a jacuzzi, which we didn't use as we felt kind of guilty to use due to the amount of water required. Outside the room, there is a well equipped shared kitchen with another room. You would need a car to reach the place.
Hi Jordan, We are now able to respond to our reviews and I just wanted to say how considerate you are. Yes we do have a shortage of water but we feel our guests comfort is most important- hence we have a spa for your use and don't restrict our showers with energy efficient- your comfort and needs are foremost in our thoughts!
We loved our stay at Southern Anchorage Retreat. Drew was so welcoming and helpful with things to do in the area, the place was spotless, and the treats for our honeymoon were so thoughtful! The peace and serenity of the location was awesome!
Hi Cathy, Agoda now let us respond to reviews so I'm a little slow. It was great to have you stay, I hope your honeymoon was fabulous and you enjoyed our beautiful retreat, Drew
Lovely place for the old and young :) ”
Location was great for a stopover before we start our GOR tour. Kids were excited to see the kangaroos just right outside the suite and the resident wallaby with its joey. Great place, well equipped kitchen, strong shower .. Feels just like home. Highly recommended. The only dissappointment with the trip(which has got nothing to do with the accommodation) is the cloudy weather. We were hoping to do star gazing at Southern Anchorage but the weather was against us. We will be back for longer stay.
It was great to meet you and the family Ang! Weather didn't help for star gazing which is amazing in our bush area- hopefully next time you score better. Would love to welcome you back-get in touch and we'll look after you. We are really tidying up the place making it a real attraction. Drew
One of the best views i have ever had from my room in any accomodation i have ever stayed in. Great value for money and the owners are wonderful people. I can't recommend this wonderful little retreat enough!
Glad you loved your stay Lasse- are views are superb and we really are working hard on building a fabulous place for our guests to enjoy! Please come back and enjoy our fabulous hard work and amazing landscaping.
Beautiful, comfortable and quiet”
A very comfortable BnB style accommodation up in the hills away from the noise. Nice bedroom and bath with a shared kitchen.
Glad you enjoyed a stay in our suites- they share a commercial kitchen, but have great decks, views ensuite bathroom and comforts to yourself. Next time come and stay in one of our luxurious cottages- they are amazing!
Nice cosy retreat with a view”
We booked the Coastal Room which shared a building with the Garden Room, kitchen area and reception. It's a lovely room, warm and cosy for winter, with a wonderful view of the hills and a glimpse of the ocean, even had a Kookaburra on the balcony one morning. The shower was magnificent as well as the spa, but the towels are a little small. Bed was comfortable. 3G mobile internet is accessible. Breakfast was simple with bread, yoghurt, peaches. 20 minutes drive from 12 Apostles, 15 mins from Melba Gully. Would definitely return.
Hello Ly, Certainly your score does not match your description and the fact that you said you'd return. This means you are very picky and I like that, we are too. In fact if you came back now you'd be very impressed with the amazing progress we've made on upgrading, landscaping and improving. All the best!
Magnificent Gateway for couple”
Very comfortable suites, friendly owner/ staff, wonderful breakfast, welcome biscuit, clean suite, clean common area. A bit distance to 12 apostles but still acceptable. All at a very competitive price.
Thankyou Gaius for your terrific description. we do offer a very competitive price and our location speaks for itself. We have some of the only views towards the Twelve Apostles along the coast- I know the Tourism Information Centre staff recommend our views for the spectacular outlook towards the Apostles, and our nature is superb!
Beautiful property at a great location for exploring the Gr Ocean Rd”
Lovely cottage at a great location for exploring the Great Ocean Rd and the Otways. Spacious bedroom with ensuite. The room has a private balcony with fab views! There is a kitchen with modern appliances (dishwasher, oven, microwave) which is shared with the other bedroom. Andrew is lovely and happily provides information on the area and sights worthwhile visiting. Would def stay here again!
Glad you loved your stay in the Harbour suite- it has great views and terrific facilities. There is a shared commercial kitchen with the other suite , but most people love their decks, rooms and views and having a commercial kitchen at their disposal is perfect. Then the views in the morning looking out at the landscaped garden, rolling hills or coastal views are superb! There is so much to see and do- definitely recommend longer stays!
Andrew is the host. He is friendly and helpful, recommended a few good scenic highlights to us. His lodge is wonderful, with an incredible view of natural vegetation. His kitchen is well equipped, even includes a dish washing machine. Breakfast ranges from bread to cereals, also with a wide choices of drinks such As orange, milk, chocolate and coffee. Even yoghurt and preserved fruit cups are available free. The site is not too close to the 12 Apostles rocks or Apollo bay but still accessible. I have two wonderful nights there.
Fantastic to meet you Leung, we are in a very unique and remote part of Australia, with amazing bush, coastal and views towards the 12 Apostles. The guides at the visitor information centre say we have some of the only and best views towards the cliffs of the 12 Apostles! Glad you stayed 2 days- it just gives you time to experience more of our amazing coast and highlights and means you can relax and enjoy your stunning 12 Apostles experience. All the best for future travels Leung!
nice overnight rest-stop/ nice view/ bland room”
The owner kindly emailed me a welcome the day before arrival which was very helpful. I arrived fairly late- 7.45pm, and the key was left for me. I wasn't expecting to have to share a communal kitchen/ lounge area with a woodburner - I wouldn't have booked this otherwise had I known, so I felt as if I had been tricked. There was no breakfast as such, despite the write up - there was a box of thin brown bread/ tiny packets of butter/ bad jam/ vegemite/ plus a choice of cereals and a yoghurt and processed packaged fruit in the fridge. It was a free-for all, do it yourself breakfast - nothing warm, not very special. Even had to clean up afterwards which at the price was quite cheeky. The owner was friendly and helpful however, but this is more like a 2 star place, a hostel, despite the friendliness & the view. I feel it is over-rated and most certainly not a first choice place. Fairly clean, quite grubby in places and nothing very inviting. For one night's stop in the middle of nowhere it is fine though. good location after a long drive.
It's amazing that you thought you were tricked- it is in the description and photos that the two suites share a commercial kitchen. The previous owners used to do full meals for the whole retreat in this area- we just leave the huge commercial kitchen/lounge for the two suites. Most times the guests don't even see each other- as they both have their own bathrooms, bedrooms and deck areas. I don't understand why you'd complain when you didn't have anybody else in the area anyway???? You certainly contradict yourself in your comments- maybe the fact you were by yourself, travelling alone, meant it wasn't a special place but I know most guests love the rooms, views, decorating and the breakfast we supply.
Beautiful Place, Tremendous Staff”
The room was clean and perfect size for what we needed. Andrew was tremendous in giving us recommendations along our route back to Melbourne and ensuring our stay was as comfortable as possible. I HIGHLY recommend staying here.
Thanks Daniel, It was a pleasure to meet and host you both. Glad you enjoyed your stay and our recently renovated rooms. The views speak for themselves- superb.
1 night stay to see the Apostles”
Great, quiet place. Host was very pleasant and informative. There's not much around for dining options, so be prepared for that. Views from the balcony are stunning. The biggest downside was that the breakfast was pretty lacking, compared to other B&B's we stayed at in Australia- and you have to cook your own food. Other than that, it was great. We would stay again.
Hello Preston, In our suites we provide a free continental breakfast with unlimited tea/coffee/milk/juice and toast and cereals. Some guests are amazed at the amount and variety we have and rave about what we provide. Some like yourself love to be spoilt and have a homecooked breakfast, etc, provided, but since we provide it for free, and leave it for you to make when you want, we find 99% of guests prefer it this way. The previous owners got poor reviews as they provided breakfast and charged extra $25, and also woke the people up at the set time- we prefer our accommodation to be relaxed and for you to just take in our amazing views and nature.
Perfect spot! Marie Gabrielle cabin was spacious, clean, well appointed, private with gorgeous views”
Hot tub and wood fire combined with comfy bed, pillows, leather lounge to sink into. Awesome view with kangaroos hopping by at dusk and morning. Drew was very helpful, giving us tips to enjoy the Great Ocean Road off the beaten track. Would highly recommend a stay here!!!
Glad you loved Marie Gabrielle cottage Tracey- the views and hot tub are sensational. It was a real pleasure to meet you both. Drew
Relaxing and comfortable ”
Stayed at the Coastal and Garden Suites. Very quiet and peaceful place with everything you need. Fully equipped Kitchen with breakfast. Comfortable bed. Nice Andrew, very helpful. View from the balcony was great. Perfect
Our balcony views are truly spectacular with kangaroos, kookaburras, crimson rosellas, just some of our visitors. Then there's the spectacular coastal and bush views, we also have some of the only views towards the cliffs of the 12 Apostles. Our two suites have great facilities and include a free continental breaky, and our cottages are amazing- heated jacuzzis, beautiful and luxurious- an easy place to relax for a day or a week!
let down by breakfast”
We loved the place up until the breakfast which was more on the lines of help yourself and then we read the note which told us to do our own washing up and tidy away. If they feel that they are a 4 star hotel then I`m afraid they need to step up at breakfast time.
Ah Colin, we have many guests who love our relaxed retreat and rave about the variety and amount available for their free (yep- free) continental breakfast. We really are not a b&b- as you have your own facilities and we don't make you sit in our lounge and watch tv with us and sit down at breakfast with us. We provide great facilities, views, rooms and breakfast at a good price and send information to guests who book, so they can really plan their stay.
Perfect spot to relax at the end of the Great Ocean Road. Drew made us feel at home and safe in his accommodations.
It really is a beautiful and tranquil place to stay Jeffrey. I know I feel really safe and can just enjoy the ambience of our amazing nature. Hope your travels all went well!
The best retreat in our trip”
Quite and the hotel has everything we need.
Anchor is the perfect cottage for two couples, a family or just friends. A beautiful cottage with everything you need! Drew
Great place to stay very friendly”
Was a lovely weekend. Really enjoyed the ability to have a spa and sit by the fire as the rain came down
Doesn't matter whether it's raining or sunny- our cottages are well appointed and between the decks, bbq, jacuzzi, woodfires- there is heaps to keep a guest content. Fiji is a beautiful cottage! Drew
Very good.Andrew and wife were excellent hosts.Very clean and spacious..Only draw back is the remoteness of the location. For hikers and Trekkers will be a fantastic place
We have so many walkers and hikers use our place as a base for the Great Ocean Walk, you are correct. Drawback is the remoteness- thats why we have so many guests who regularly come back to enjoy the spectacular views, nature and peace and tranquility. Our bird life and animals that visit are amazing and a real snapshot of the beauty of our Australian bush setting. As it says in our description- if you're after city life- we're definitely not for you!
