A nice nest in Ueno”

A tight little room with a tighter little bathroom, but everything worked and the bed was comfortable. Stayto (formerly Oak Hotel) is a hostel with some private rooms. The guests were a mix of Japanese and foreigners. The two beds in our room took up most of the space, but it was all quite workable. The bathroom was not much bigger than airplane bathroom, but with a deep little Japanese tub and shower. We admired the engineering of it. Clean and useful. The staff was extremely helpful and had good English. The location, about a five-minute walk from Inarichou underground station, and 15 minutes from Ueno rail station, was excellent for us. We could walk to the museums in beautiful Ueno Park, and further through the older houses and little temples of north Ueno to Yanaka, and the delightful old-fashioned shopping street of Yanaka Ginza. Yanaka was one of the few areas of downtown Tokyo that was not destroyed in the devastating US firebombing of March 1945, when a hundred thousand civilians died in the firestorm and much of the old wooden city vanished. In any case, Stayto's location was excellent in itself, and despite being at the northern edge of downtown, was a good place to get transport from to all parts of the city.

First Choice”

I've been traveling to Tokyo thrice now and Stayto (formerly Oak Hotel) is my first choice in looking for a place to stay. Room is big enough, Staff are very friendly, nearest station is Inaricho station but Asakusa and Ueno Station are within walking distance, can easily find convenience and food stores, internet is good. Would stay again

Excellent Accommodation”

I highly recommend to stay at Stayto Hotel. Overall, the accommodation provided is excellent. The price per night is worth it. The location is very good as it is near to JR Ueno station and Inaricho subway, bus stop, and convenience stores. The room is very clean; room is being cleaned everyday and towels and slippers are being replaced. The staff communicates well and they are very accommodating and friendly particularly Maiko. Facilities in the room are all functional. I'll definitely stay to this place if I'll travel again to Japan.

Value for money hotel”

Convenient Location, friendly service

We stayed for 3 nights from 21 - 24 Feb 11. As we arrived on a late night flight to Haneda, the hotel's convenient location (10min walk from Ueno Station's Asakusa Exit) was much appreciated. The hotel's reception closes at 0100hrs. Be prepared to lug your luggage down a flight of stairs from the station to the street. Take note that it is advisable to avoid taking the taxi from the airport. The monorail to Hamamatsucho is a better way to get to the hotel. At Hamamatsucho, you can transfer to the JR Yamanote Line bound for Ueno. If you are delayed at customs, you can hop on a taxi at Ueno which will bring you to the hotel for 1000 yen (estimated). The room was very small but this is expected in this city especially for the price one is paying. However, this only detrimental if you have plenty of luggage. It is likely that you can only lay out 2 pieces of luggage to unpack at any one time. Upon check in, you will be requested to deposit 1000 yen for the room card (only one is issued). With the heater switched on, it does not get too cold at night and one can sleep in comfort even when you are wearing the yukata provided by the hotel. Do apply moisturising lotion or leave a cup of water out on the table. If you have your own laptop, you can ask for the LAN cable kit. It is easy to set it up within your own room. Otherwise, you can use the computers in the lobby and I believe there is wireless reception in the lobby. If you need to use the Loppi machine at Lawson convenience store, the Lawson further down the street after the turn into the hotel alley is not the one to go. Look for the big Lawson store near Ueno station (other exit near the elevated motorway). You can refer to the station map. You will need that if you intend to visit Ghibli museum. This hotel came recommended by our close friends who have chosen to stay there during their stay in Tokyo. We liked it and stayed 1 more night on the 27 when we returned to Tokyo.

Rare Find”

This was by far the most affordable hostel I've stayed at. Location is perfect, super near Inaricho Station. I love the fact that a Lawson 100 store is just about 3 blocks away from this hotel . The room is huge that all our luggages fit on the floor while we assemble all our things! Private bathroom! Also, there's a common area downstairs where you can cook, dine in and/or ref storage. No resto or cafe but you'll be glad to see all the options on the vending machine at the lobby. Great staff, very friendly and can speak clearly. Quiet area but near the busy streets of Asakusa and Ueno. I love this place. The only downside was, beds are bunk beds for 4 in a room but I guess when you're too tired after a day of walking, touring and shopping, having your own bed all to yourself is a great deal. I'll definitely book this when I'm in Tokyo again!!!

Perfect little base from which to explore Tokyo”

good price, many services, friendly staff, easy location

Found the Oak Hotel during most recent Tokyo trip and definitely plan to use it in the future. It's only a block from the Ginza line and a 10-minute walk from Ueno station, which has Hibiya, Yamanote and Keisei. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful, and they all speak great English. The room is tiny (it's Tokyo), but clean and well-designed. The best part is that they have free WiFi and computers in the lobby, along with washers and dryers and a wall full of helpful information. The neighborhood is very quaint, but in no time at all you can be tearing up the street markets of Ueno. The Keisei will get you to and from Narita for 1,000 yen less than the Narita Express, and it's so close.

Great Stay at a Great Location”

Friendly staffs, Nice clean rooms, Good location

The hotel staffs were all very friendly and always speak with smiles across their faces. They can speak English and can give you directions for places in Tokyo but are not very informative about attractions outside Tokyo. The hotel had all the facilities I needed for my stay, which can be found either in my room, or otherwise at the shared kitchen. The room was clean and amenities were changed daily, although it is a little small. It is conveniently located 10min from Ueno station which is on the Yamanote line (one of the most frequently used line for tourists since the main stations like Tokyo, Shinjuku, and Harajuku are all on this line). Asakusa, where it houses a well known temple, Sensoji, lined with little shops selling delicate souveniors and food, is within walking distance from the hotel. Ueno station itself has attractions like Ueno zoo and ueno park. It nearby attractions were good for my days in Japan without JR pass.

I had a restful 3 nights of sleep in my lovely, cozy Japanese room at Stayto. Room was a good size and it was kept clean in all the days of my stay. Staff was very accommodating, efficient and they all spoke on English very well. Hotel location was very near bus stops and a train station. my favorite place to stay in Tokyo”

Location value for money attentive and friendly staff

I have always had an enjoyable stay at the Oak Hotel. The staff speaks English well and are very helpful. Computers are available in the lobby 24 hrs a day . It is located near many tourist sites and both Japan Rail and Tokyo Subway (Metro) stations. It is a very safe location day or night, and has many convenience stores open 24 hours within walking distance. It is in a quiet area for Tokyo and not ugly like Shinjuku or Shibuya,or Roppongi and is in a neighborhood that many local people live in, not commute to like Shibuya or Shinjuku. Ueno station is within walking distance and you can get to Narita airport easily from there and all over the Tokyo area. The cleaning staff are very honest and if you leave anything in the room you can be sure it will be returned. They often have parties and trips for the guests.

Ueno's most convenient hotel”

superb location, the free extras
absence of breakfast option

Looking for a hotel that is not too far away from a railway or metro station was one of the key points for selecting a place to stay. In fact, it is just 700m from Oak Hotel to Ueno station's airport line. It can't get much easier. For a hotel this close. Compared to a hotel of the same price range and location at home in Germany, Oak offers additional free extras: a cup or two of tea, hygiene (toothbrush, razor, etc.), and of course internet access in both your room and the lobby. TV is limited to a few Japanese channels however. Silent air conditioner is included. (Bath-)rooms may come a bit small, but then again, that is just what I expected and wanted to experience. The single-bed room has more than enough space for a solo traveler. The hotel reception staff speaks English very well and can help you with about anything. Breakfast was not included, but that is not much a problem as there are plenty of stores, shops and eateries around. You will also find international franchises; not needing to mention McDo, Subway Sandwich restaurants (at European quality!) are available at a few select locations. Knowing basic Japanese language is tremendously useful, as people outside the hotel often do not know English. Overall, I was very satisfied and would come again.

Excellent Ho(s)tel in Tokyo”

Inexpensive, Friendly, Good Location

Very welcoming and helpful reception desk, many of whom spoke very good English. Free wired Internet access in the rooms. Very good location one stop away from Ueno station (one of the biggest transportation hubs in Tokyo) on the Tokyo Metro's Ginza line, though Ueno station is a very easy walk down Asakusa-dori if you want to save yourself the metro fare. Lots of restaurants and convenience stores (which are very nice in Japan) within walking distance, too.

Staff are very friendly and convenient Hotel!!!”

We arrived hotel around 10 am at the first day. Staff are very nice and let us check-in earlier. The room is bigger that we image. The toilet is tiny but clean. Hotel provide tableware and locker on 1F. Service is good, we can keep our luggage even checked out. It will be perfect if hotel provide bathing gel rather than soap. It is too dry in Toyko even raining outside. We stayed a week and absolutely will reservation Stayto once more on our next trip!

great location, easy access”

as the title says - for the price, it's a great location, easy access. The amenities are simple but adequate, and the internet is free.
Perhaps a bigger sign - the hotel is in a small driveway just off Asakusa dori, but if you're not sharp you may just miss it. Otherwise, there's not problem at all finding it. This wasn't a problem with me for the price, but they don't have a restaurant attached to their hotel, so you've no option if you don't feel like going out to eat.

What was a big thing for me was that it's 10-15 minutes away from JR Ueno station on foot and if you're lazy, you can take the Ginza line to Inaricho and come out 2 mins away from it. I found it easy to get to places like Asakusa, and if you're taking the Keisei Skyliner from Narita Airport which terminates at Ueno station, this is very convenient. Because JR Ueno is a big hub station, can also hop on the Yamanote line and get to many other places in Tokyo. It's also a surprisingly quiet neighborhood, so noise is minimal. If you're looking for a place that puts you in proximity to entertainment and nightlife though, this probably won't be for you. The staff is friendly, internet cable is free, drink vending machine is available on the first floor, and if you need to check out before 6am, they'll give you back your 1000 yen key deposit, and you can just leave your card key in your room when you leave. The single room is small but just right for someone like me who's traveling with a medium-sized trolley and a backpack. Of course, having your own toilet and bath is always a plus. Yukata and towels are also provided as well as a hot water heater, and tv. It's walking distance to a convenience store, and a family restaurant. I've stayed at another hotel with higher rates for a more atmospheric stay but I still think Oak is a better choice. I'd definitely stay here again.

Off Asakusa Street, great value for money in a convenient location ”

Stayto Hotel & Hostel is ubicated in a convenient location off Asakusa Street. I stayed there on and off many times. On my opinion it has great value for money. I meet there travelers from everywhere around the world. The staff is extremely kind, helpful and efficient. There is a small kitchenette, big enough to prepare your own meal -for me has been very convenient since as a vegan isn't easy to get good inexpensive meals every day-. Other facilities are on the standard. Highly recommanded. -R!cca+

Reasonable price for Tokyo”

comfy and clean, reasonable price

Room was tiny which is expected for Tokyo. But had all amenities needed, was very clean and very comfy. Free wifi access for all rooms. Staff spoke perfect english and were very helpful. Price is very reasonable for Tokyo. Hotel is located less than a 10 minute walk from Ueno station (more if you are carrying lots of luggage). There is also a subway station just minutes walk away. The immediate hotel area though is not good if you want any nightlife. We were there on a Friday and Saturday night, and the entire area from hotel into Asakusa was dead each night. Bars and restaurants started shutting down around 10:30 and streets are deserted. So you'll need to take subways/taxis to do anything fun at night!

Sweet, laid back hotel in an humble environment.”

Good location, lovely environment, friendly staffs.

it was our first trip to japan as a couple and we were kind of worried about getting to the hotel, but turned out our journeys from ueno jr station to oak hotel (and the opposite) has become the best walking tour we have experienced! the humble environment and friendly japanese we met along the way really showed how japan really is and we really loved to experience that. we felt like we were one of them. the hotel was fine, staffs were so friendly (compared to other hotels we stayed at), and there are many restaurants around the hotel. room was relatively fine -space was okay for us because we didn't bring many luggages- and clean except for the really small bathroom. overall, this is a good hotel with great price. i will definitely stay here again. recommended for backpackers.

Great hotel, great rooms, great location”

Big room, great location close to metro and ueno, great staff

my boyfriend and i stayed here for 8 nights in feb and i was a bit skeptical of what to expect since it was very cheap and had been advertised as a hostel on some sites (not a hostel fan despite my age). but the place was great, 700m walk from ueno station (anyone who says its too far is being ridiculous) ten metres from inarichojimbocho metro station. our double room was the biggest room i've ever had in my four trips to japan. the staff were great, we sent our snowboard bag via takkyubin from hakuba and when it arrived they offered to keep it in a luggage room for us which has never been offered to me in japan before. the room and bathroom was very clean and modern and there was a daily cleaning service. however the only cons are that the bed was rock hard - even my boyfriend who likes a stiff mattress was not happy. also the wifi was distasterous on the 3rd floor we were on, not sure about other floors though or the lobby, since they were all separate connections. and there was some loud noises that sound like a machine was running in the building that would come on at night. overall: amazing for what we paid for, but would only stay there again if there was no issue with the wifi (couldn't even skype my family since it would cut out every 3 seconds and not reconnect, no lan option for rooms - big deal for us personally)

Hidden treasure”

Bigger room than expected (first place we stayed in Japan.) The toilet was comfortable. There was a humidity vent in the bathroom. Internet was provided for free in room when requested. There was a TV and mini fridge. The room also had a small water pot boiler and some tea and 2 cups. The bed was a standard semi-double. The was a stove, microwave and washing machine on the first floor. There were 3 computers available for free use, with skype. The staff were very friendly.
I believe the TV was pay only, never really bothered to turn it on. The shower was rather small width wise. The bathroom smelled a little bit like mildew, just had to leave the humidity vent on to vent the bathroom. Room was a little cramped with the luggage but wasn't as hard to move around as in other places we stayed in Japan. Free internet in room required you to request for a modem set to connect in your room, most places just had a LAN port and cable ready to use.

The hotel was not too far from Ueno station. We did get lost initially because I got mixed up as we had to get there on the Kensei line instead of the JR, and didn't know it was a different station slightly south of the JR. I had an idea of the general direction in which we should be going and eventually found it after asking for help twice. If you arrive through the JR station, simply walk up to Asakusa dori and walk straight, you'll eventually see ads and banners for the hotel, they are somewhat easy to miss. After we arrived, we checked in quickly. There was a 1000Yen deposit for the key, but you get it back on checkout and return of key. We really liked the location of this hotel as it is near Ueno station, which we thought was significantly centralized. We visited Akihabara, Asakusa, and took a tour our of Hamamatsucho. We were usually out of the hotel, left early and returned late so we didn't get to mingle or be around much. There was a wall that had lots of information and maps about things to do as well as tips and advice. There were various vending machines in the first floor.

Small hotel with a hostel feel at the counter. Helpful staff. Stayed in a Japanese Style room, tokyo sized, so was an interesting experience moving around the room and packing/unpacking luggage. Would be a challenge if you are big sized. Otherwise good place to rest and sleep. Area is a little quiet on the weekends but its a 15min walk to Ueno train hub or 1 station away on the metro. Quite walkable really to the Asakusa temple and to the toy street just south of Asakusa.

A Quiet and Affordable Place in Downtown Tokyo”

Location; Hotel Condition/Cleanliness; Room Comfort/Standard

Situated in Ueno near Inaricho Station (Ginza Line), Oak Hotel is quite hidden from plain sight as it is located at the back of a building along the main street. Though discretely hidden, this small hotel is quite a favorite for backpackers, couple travellers, and even groups or families. There's WIFI coverage in the rooms, a common kitchen, computers with internet for free, lots of travel guides, and electric bikes for rent. The staff is also very polite and helpful and their English is good. There are several convenience stores nearby and some restaurants, too. If you are looking for an affordable and quiet place to stay while in Tokyo, then this hotel should be one of your options!
