Such a beautiful place to stay ”
i stayed at this hotel last week. it was a fantastic stay. having originally booked just for myself, i took my aunt along with me in the end and contacted the hotel in advance to ask for the room to be changed to a twin. this was no trouble for them at all, and we were given a huge room with its own living area and sofas etc. the room and building itself is a little tired around the edges so don't expect perfection on that front. however, i could forgive that because of the character of the building and above all the service. upon arrival, we were greeted straight away with a full set of tea and cake from the estate. they seem to give you that whenever you come back from anywhere at no extra charge. at every stage we were treated like royalty. the main chef, i think his name was jayaram, was so friendly and helpful at all times- he made the place feel like a jo,e rather than a hotel. we could order whatever food we wanted for meals and they would cook to order. when we went for a walk, one of the staff came with us with brollies in case it rained and showed us the safe and best places to walk. this is so typical of this hotel- you don't have to ask for anything, they just give you a wonderful service. i left with fantastic memories and my aunt loved it too. the one problem some people might encounter is that the staff don't speak great english. however, the manager does, so if you need to say anything complex in english you can speak to him. one other thing to note is that this hotel is far from nuwara eliya. it currently takes well over 2 hrs to get there because the road is being repaired. i preferred the hatton area to nuwara eliya though as it was much quieter. but it depends what you want really....

Colonial house with deligthful staff”
indeed a unique experience both in terms of accommodation and the attention paid to visitors led by the devoted jayarant. a step back to colonial days, the bungalow is situated above tea plantations from which visitors can view the pickers plucking. all facilities are meticulously clean, well presented with comfortable beds. one's lasting memory however is of jayarant, whose imploring to treat the bungalow "as your own home" is meant in every sense. jayarant is as much a product of the colonial times as the bungalow. he also delivers on the food front with generous portions of local fare from his own hands. the main negative is getting there. the road from nuwara eliya is currently under rebuilding and is virtually impassable for the next year or so. hence getting there from nuwara eliyarequires the long way around wich takes up to 3 hours. the trip is normally 43 klms! in the end, however, the inconvenience is worth it.

Luxury and Comfort in the Tea Terrace”
We stayed in Mandira Strathdon Bungalow for a night. It is not a hotel but a colonial style farm house. You feel like you are home. The bed room and living room are very stylish and well furnished. The staff treat you like the boss. The breakfast was delisous. They serve the best coffee and tea I ever had. The best part of the house is that it is surrounded by the tea terrace and mountains. In the morning we had a beautiful view of the the fields and mountain from the back yard, and took a walk in the country road between the layers of tea trees. It is a great experience.

A Royal Stay, Unforgettable Luxurious Bungalow”
We stayed at Mandira Strathdon on our honeymoon. Finding the location was pretty easy when you put google maps on. It was a warm welcome and we were served fresh strawberries with chocolate syrup. The hot tea was amazing in the chilled environment. After unpacking we went out to the nearby 140 years old christ church (Christ Church Warleigh, Dickoya) which was about 20 minutes towards Maskeliya. The staff was extremely friendly and we could make any special request for meals. You can see main railway track on a far (at least 1km away) mountain and see trains pass by for around 15 minutes until they disappear in mountains. Tea Factory is down the mountain of Strathdon estate and you can see it from the panoramic view of the hotel garden. If you are interested in Sri Lankan food, try string hoppers for the breakfast with chicken curry. It's obviously the best breakfast I've ever had!

Old British planters bungalow in beautiful setting”
A typical old English planters bungalow set in a tea plantation with breathtaking views. The service was with a smile and food to order was very good prepared by the in house chef. Two of the suites were very spacious with windows and other two a good size but no windows. The bathrooms a bit outdated and old being the original fittings and plumbing. The bed linen needs updating with fresh and new bed spreads etc...a place to relax and unwind and a visit to the tea factory a must - there is a charge for this although you pay for the bungalow. There are other tea factories you can visit on the way to nuwara eliya at no cost.

Beautiful bungalow and fantastic service”
We loved our stay at Madira Strathdon Bungalow. The view of the tea plantation is amazing and so peaceful. Perfect location to relax at the end of a trip around Sri Lanka. We were warmly welcome by the house chief and we felt like home. The food was delicious! I believe they only have rooms with single beds ( but very comfy) and there is not much to do outside the tea plantations.

Peaceful getaway”
Mandira Strathdon Bungalow is a relaxing place to sit outside on the patio and view tea planation fields in peace. The staff is very friendly and the food outstanding. The dinner of local dishes should not be missed. There are rooms which are inside and enclosed without windows only glass doors accessing the indoor patio. I would recommend choose a room which has window accessing the fresh outside air.

Excellent location, great staff and food. ”
high in the tea country it made a welcome break from the heat of the harbarana area where we had come from. we broke the drive from kandy with a rail journey to hatton - a must if you can manage it. the room did not have any outside windows, which was a shame but did have a huge lounge. you ordered your food in the morning and the staff went to the market to buy it and then cook it for you in the evening. all wonderful !

Ultimate R&R and best food in Sri Lanka ”
This was my second stay at the bungalow. I agree with some of the reviews on here and trip advisor which say the bathrooms need a plumbing update. This may not be the most modern hotel you've ever stayed in but I think there are so many standard uniform hotels in Sri Lanka this is something different. If you're not seriously fussy them none of the little older niggles in the bungalow should bother you...it's a very old building so to get the character of a place like that you sometimes have to put I with a less than perfect plumbing system. I have to say if you are looking for rest there is no pace better. Absolute peace I often found myself wondering if I was in heaven. Cooking if you like Sri Lankan food is out of this world and the service I had from Jayaram in my opinion is the best and most personal I've had in Sri Lanka which is why I came back a second time. It is a little bit of a long journey on winding roads from Colombo but in my opinion worth it. Visit the tea factory if you have time- really interesting trip

Great place but a little far from downtown”
This is a beautiful and quiet place to stay, even too quiet to stay alone.Far from Nuwara Eliya but the air and the view are better. My husband and I spent two happy nights there. The food is delicious.I think it is a good place to relax you can just stay there one or two day doing nothing no need hurry to visit somewhere else.

luxurious relaxation”
Mandira Strathdon is a place to go to be pampered and to relax. It is set amongst a tea plantation and the gardens are beautiful. The house is reminiscent of a bygone era. However it is quite isolated and there is nowhere else to go to eat. It is also not licensed, which I think should be made clear out the outset. The staff were wonderful and nothing was too much trouble.

Lovely quiet bungalow nestled in the tea hills”
The bungalow is nestled among the lush tea hills of Hatton, with breathtaking views of the surrounding tea estates. Service staff were friendly and accomodating, showcasing Sri Lankan hospitality at its best. The food and tea were excellent.

Hard to find the place, very far from Newara Elyia”
The Bungalow put an address on agoda saying it was on Newara Elyia area, and we plan to arrive one day before we go to Horton Plaine. But our driver told us it was not Newara Elyia area, we searched on google map by using the providing address and still can't find it. We called the hotel number, no one is picking up the phone, said office closed. Then we asked many other local drivers and find another Mandira Bungalow. They helped us on the direction, we drive back and the enterence are very hidden on a side of experess way, easily to get missed. When we finally arrived the right place, we almost took 3 hours to find it. But the room is great, clean, and elegant. But the food was very disappoint, since it was already very late when we arrived at the hotel, we ordered sandwich and grilled potatoes, it took them more than 1 hour to put the food on the table. and the sandwich is cold, grilled potatoes are not grilled potatoes.

Beautiful Bungalow in the hills.”
This was a peaceful oasis amongst the tea plantations. Very conformable and well set up. This is part of the Strathdon Tea Estate and was easy to find once we called them. We went on a trip to some waterfalls and a tour of a tea factory which was great.

brilliant”
This colonial style bungalow is set in a beautiful location high up in the plantations.the rooms are really beautiful and we were met by warm from the oven home made cake and tea. We then had a quick wander round the garden whilst our food was made-we could have asked for anything but we opted for Sri lankan curry which was delicious. The next morning we were shown round the plantation. unfortunately my daughter only wore flip flops and was a bit freaked out by the leeches-I would definately advise trainers and long trousers!

It is a very cosy stay like our own place.”
The stay is amazing and we have a very wonderful time at Mandira Strathdon. The staff is especially helpful and always try to make our stay cosy. The food comes in home-cooked style, and is the best I've had in Sri Lanka.

Wonderful Stay!”
I stayed here for two nights and highly recommend. From the personalised service, to local information, to the simply delicious food, this hotel could not get any better. I read in previous reviews about the bathrooms being slightly shabby, which I agree with, but a small price to pay for how wonderful everything else was. You need to approach it with an open mind, as from time to time you'll be asked to order food in advance - but surely this is a plus, to know that all food being freshly prepared for you each day....? There was ALWAYS tea, and always cake, and always a smile.
