Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam are both satellite towns of Kuala Lumpur. There are a few hotels in Shah Alam, but the best selection is in Petaling Jaya. With expansive residential neighborhoods and a flourishing shopping and night scene, this area appeals mostly to locals and expatriates. The exception is Damansara Specialist Hospital, a leading center for medical tourism in Malaysia.
Petaling Jaya was founded in the 1950s, and in just a few decades it has grown into one of the most important cities in Malaysia. Half a million people live here, many of whom commute to Kuala Lumpur via Subang Jaya KMT station
It’s common for locals to leave KLCC for the refined shopping options in Petaling Jaya. Local shopping centers are hip and include an Ikea, the Ikano Power Center and Cathay Cineleisure. Bangsar Shopping Complex isn’t far off, either. Local night markets leave locals with plenty to do after the sun sets.
The themed nightclubs and bars of Petaling Jaya are an attraction in their own right. In fact, some tourists book accommodation in Petaling Jaya or Shah Alam so they don’t have far to go after a night out. The distinct, international atmosphere here makes this a popular party destination for expatriates.
Many of the visitors to Petaling Jaya and Shah Alam are business travelers, and a thriving golf culture has sprung up in the area. Prestigious golf clubs in the district include Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, Civil Service KGPA Golf Club, Kinara Golf Club and Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.
