Hotels in Sudirman are close to business addresses and cultural attractions, and many of the hotels offer excellent business facilities. The area is named after General Sudirman, Indonesia’s legendary National Hero, revered for his bravery in resisting colonial occupation. A statue of Surdiman is located on a busy road surrounded by skyscrapers home to all sorts of businesses including banks, high-end restaurants, international hotels and luxurious apartments.
One of the most prominent buildings is the Indonesia World Trade Center at Wisma Metropolitan office complex by Casablanca Flyover. The building is home to various high profile tenants, including the Canadian Embassy, American & British Chamber of Commerce, UNICEF and the Commonwealth Bank. Among the modern high-rises on Jalan Sudirman, the 34-storey Roman-style Da Vinci Tower also stands out.
Jakarta’s Orchid Garden is an extensive collection of exotic orchid species, including the black-orchid (bualagna pandurata) which grows in the Kersik Luway reserve of East Kalimantan. The nearby Textile Museum houses the world’s finest collection of textiles from across the Indonesian islands. There are displays of traditional weaving, using local instruments, and visitors can take batik lessons.
