6 stars for staff”
We had a good stay in the hillside villa and it was heavenly. Was a really good stay. The island was deserted after 4pm-9am as the reviews were mentioning so take the chance to enjoy the island then. For this price point it’s really hard to beat. Also the staff were really good and friendly, felt like they went out of their way to make it comfortable for us. We had a heavy luggage and from the boat to the rooms which was a tall climb, they basically helped us with it. Also let us call them when checking out to help us with it. Some suggestions was that maybe after dark they could have activities like live music in their restaurant for guests to sit in. There was a roaming musicians when we were having dinner that went to each table and felt it would be better if they had a stage that people could sit around and hear dedications. Bad point was it felt alittle uncoordinated when trying to get there, we were staying in both sutera sanctuary lodges in kinabalu park and manukan island and there was no way of having someone coordinate this as one booking. In the end we had to book both separately on agoda and arrange the transport like 2 separate bookings. Given these along with poring hot spring are really the nice locations in kk, would think they should link it all together. It was also a little confusing where to go when we reached sutera harbour as we thought maybe they were related entities.
This is not our first trip to Manukan, me and my family have been there several times from Jesselton Jetty, just for a round trip. But I managed to get the best offer there was through Agoda for an overnight stay at this island. It was surprising because I usually thought islands stays would cost most than RM1K per night, but I booked this immediately when finding out it's only less than 600 bucks per night. I was me and my family first time taking a boat from Sutera Harbour Marina Jetty with a luxury boat (better than the ones we boarded at Jesselton Point), it's not rough or challenging as Jesselton speed boats, it was smooth and only took about 15 minutes to reach Manukan. We love the boat so much. Upon arriving at Resort reception, the welcome was unexpected. The customer service was the most friendly, there were waiting lobby where we wait comfortably and some welcoming drinks and a wet face towel to refresh. We got our villa keys in no time.
Beachside Luxury on Island”
Sutera Sanctuary Lodges is a luxurious slice of island life. Facilities are good & the beach is stunning. The hotel has its own private stretch of beach so you dint get overwhelmed by the daytrippers. Onece they leave at about 3pm you have the place to yourself & fellow guests. Excellent snorkelling conditions in the shallows. Dont miss sunset at Sunset point! We were delayed an hour getting to the Island by a problem with the Hotel boat, but on arrival we received a heartfelt apology & were upgraded to a Villa. Great Service.
Would return if I ever visit Sabah again”
My friends and I spent a night at the Manukan Island Resort during the low season, so we did not encounter any issues with noise from the public visiting Manukan Island. It was as if we had the whole island to ourselves! (which was really great) The room was very spacious, comfortable and just right for the five of us (2 queen size beds with an additional mattress). Food was excellent and we enjoyed the free flow of fresh fruit juice prepared by the staff on the spot for us. We also had an excellent time at the beach and pool reserved for in-house guests. Overall, it was a very excellent stay and I definitely wish to return for another stay if I ever visit Sabah again. The only suggestion for improvement I would give is to upgrade the path leading towards the Sunset Point. Adding more lamp posts would definitely help visitors who are leaving the place late in the evening when it is already dark. The shelter at the Sunset Point also needs some repairing.
AN EXOTIC GETAWAY”
It started with a 15 minutes boat ride from Sutera Harbour jetty on a luxurious speedboat as part of the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges room deal. The ride was awesome. We enjoyed the view and weather was good. The rooms are spacious and superb. The beach is clean and we enjoyed the swim along the beaches and snorkeling. However, the restaurant was close during the night because our stay coincided with the impending royal visit from the Sultan of Perak, Malaysia due the next day, so the staff was busy preparing for it. We had to have dinner at the open spaces next to it. The food was mediocre and is not worth the asking price but we had no choice as no other eatery was available that night. Breakfast was mediocre as well with flies everywhere but still tolerable. The ride back to the jetty (KK) was a shared boat ride by another company as the resort's boat were all unavailable due to the royal visit. So we had to make do with a less than impressive boat ride with no life jacket provided.
Relaxing and romantic”
I went there with my husband and it is the best stay so far. It is beautiful and relaxing. However, we were only told by the hotel that we were supposed to get free boat transport to Manukan Island if we make reservation through Agoda. It shouldn't have happened. The receptionist was helpful enough to get our transport back the next day to Sutera Habour.
The hotel is the only one of the small island of Manukan and the guests are treated to the island to themselves before the tourist boats arrive at 9am and leave 4pm. They're wooden chalets either on the beach front or up in to the islands jungle a little. We had a beach one and were quite grateful after a nature walk close to the jungle chalets ill-equipped left us with mosquito bites all over! The generators are quite loud and switch over every 12 hours so you have roughly 5 minutes with no electric. We came to the hotel for an escape so weren't really interested in watching TV anyway, we just planned our showers around the switchover. The nature walks were gorgeous and the beaches were looked after well. The snorkelling is relatively good but you are fighting for space to do so if it's during the day. Guests have their own beach space, dedicated swimming pool and bar a little away from the other tourists. The breakfast is similar to other hotels but limited because of the accessibility. Dinner was very limited for my husband who is allergic to fish but there was a good range for myself. It based the menu on local food sources, which is primarily fish, and was cooked in local recipes. We were unable to dive at the time but had discussed going and it is a fantastic location for KK dive sites. The hotel work with the local PADI site on the main land and would have been able to pick you up early morning on the boat to take you close by. For an escape, this hotel is fantastic, very rustic and we loved it. Wouldn't stay for any longer than a week however as facilities were limited and children would get bored very quickly. Ideal for romantic getaways.
Could be a paradise, but... ”
Sutera Lodges provides beautiful apartments, very kind hospitality and even live music during the dinner. The rooms are really spacious, beautiful and clean. However, on the beach and sea there's trash that tourists have thrown from the boats and on the beach. This is not Sutera's fault, but the trash ruins the natural beauty of the island. During the daytime there are tourist boats that come to the island, but they leave by 4 pm. After that the island is really tranquil and cosy. We enjoyed the great hospitality of the staff and the band in the evenings. However, I still missed massage, which was not available in the island.
Great island getaway ”
My time at Sutera was really lovely - the staff are great and very friendly, the lodgings had a very home-y feel, and the island is beautiful (the sunsets were breathtaking). The only negative things I have to say is that there is basically no wifi (I often couldn't send/receive messages or check my emails) and during the day there are hordes of people that come onto the island for tours (locals and tourists), which I felt really took away from the beauty of the island. I would say 2 nights is a sufficient amount of time here.
Booked a hillside lodge for two nights. Absolutely blown away by this beautiful little Island. From the transfer across in the boat to welcome greeting on the pier we were made to feel like royalty. We travel a lot and stay in wonderful hotels but the villa exceeded our expectations...as did the service we received. Immaculately clean, soft music and candles to greet us when we entered our lodge. The view was spectacular, the bed was so comfy ..not to mention those pillows...where did they find the.! The food in the resteraunt was lovely and the breakfast was wonderful. Lovely private beach and very peaceful, especially in the evening when day trippers have left. We loved this and hope to visit again...and back to Lodge 15. Only thing that would have enhanced our stay would have been massage service to allow indulging a little bit more. Special mention to all the staff on the Island who go out there way to ensure your stay is nothing short of perfection
A place to unwind and get appreciate nature ”
Island is near to the mainland, only 10 minutes travel time by speedboat from Sutera Harbour Marina. The Island is open to public from 8am to 4pm thus you will find the island is crowded between these time especially weekends and public holiday. Lots of amenities for visitors. Food serves are bountful especially the seafood as well as local fruits. Few types of accommodation are provided range from beach villa to hill top villa. These are all luxury air-coned accommodation for visitors who opt to stay overnight. The island provide visitors with strategic location to witness the sunrise & sunset. Lots of water sports are available in the island and island hoppings to the nearest islands can also be arranged. Few good restaurants are operated to caters for the daily visitors and those who stays overnight in the island.
Lovely and comfortable resort”
It is great to stay at Manukan Island Resort, the place is good for honeymoon couple, just 5 mins to the beach, the staffs are friendly, but no free transport from KK to Manukan, need to pay 30rm for a single ride, the last jetty from Jesslton point is 1615 hrs, it is inconvinence if the guest miss the jetty. And wifi only access nearby the reception.
Great experience overall”
This was a good place to stay for a couple nights. Pros: beautiful beaches and views, superb facilities, really warm staff, good hiking, snorkeling opportunities and cool wildlife Cons: the day tourists can get a little annoying as there are so many, however if you’re staying in the hillside villas there’s a beach that’s relatively private. Also, the restaurant was good with many offerings, but you have to be super specific about your order; I asked for some items that were delivered incorrectly or not at all, although with that said they were very accommodating to fix when I raised it. Finally, the island can be a little pricey, especially for beer - if you have time, stock up on supplies before you head to the island. Overall would definitely come back. Thank you Sutera!
Cozy and Clean”
Spend one night 2 adults, 3 young kids. We had a lot of fun time, the jetty is very close to the room, private beach area and cheap snorkeling rental. in the afternoon, we walked for about 40 minutes to watched amazing sunset and came back to join the lighting up Christmas tree event (specially invited with card sent to the room). Will definitely come back as Manukan Island so close to KK.
My reason for scoring cleanliness 3 stars was down to the general beach waste throughout the island. The room and resort facilities I would score 4/5 star. I discussed the beach waste with resort management and suggested they levy a small fee to provide for daily island waste collection. The challenge is beyond Manukan island but I believe as a national island reserve they need to set a good example. The cleanliness would act to attract tourism. I would recommend this island and hope to visit again. We all share the responsibility to keep our seas, beaches and shore waste free.
Helpful and Thoughtful Staff”
I book my stay through Agoda but on the day to travel to Manukan Island, my daughter caught fever and need to visit the Dr. We have no choice but to cancelled out trip. As I book the hotel at a special price, it is understand that no refund is allowed and payment is fully paid. I called in just to informed so that the boat will not wait for us.; but to my surprise they together with Agoda helped to arranged to postpone my stay. It is so kind of them to take this extra efforts. Thank you
Good resort in Manukan Island ”
Everything about the resort was perfect, from the staff, to the room cleanliness, to facilities. If you are looking for a tranquil getaway from Kota Kinabalu, this is the place to be. The only sad thing about the island is that there seems to be a lot of trash in the sea and all around the beaches.
Best customer service and beautiful island”

Great place, excellent customer service .. value for money ... special thanks to F&B manager Khairul, and his team members Egi and Stella you people are awesome!!!! Humble request to the public, please keep the island clean do not litter .. sad to see rubbish floating around the beach area .. Overall great place and people !!!
I give it a 5-star hotel, will be back if I still travel to Manukan island!”
I stayed in the hillside villa, it’s just worthy and the staffs are so helpful! The hotel managed by sutera sanctuary really has its standard! Couldn’t be more satisfied! Definitely is a must try hotel!
Had a wonderful stay! The staff were incredibly polite and friendly. The restaurant food was very good (particularly the BBQ) and very big portions! Great value for money. The room was lovely and clean and the private beach area was clean and always had sun beds free. There was lots of coral and fish to see when snorkelling. The jungle and sunset walks were also very pleasant with lots of monitor lizards and birds to see. I would recommend this hotel and would return if I am ever back in Kota Kinabalu.
