Extremely thoughtful room cleaning staff (stayed at lv4)”
The only cons were having to leave the hotel key before heading out for the day, and that the upper floors had terrible cigarette odour from the aircon vent (even though the rooms were designated non-smoking). The mid levels are good (allowed us to try different rooms). The cleaning ladies (impressive considering they're in their golden years), were so thoughtful and never fail to provide fresh supplies of towels, yukata, toiletries, teabags, water bottles every single day even when DND sign were placed on the doors. Exceptional hospitality by them, the reception staff were very attentive to situations and handed out umbrellas for all guests to borrow seeing that it suddenly rained heavily in the morning. A few staff also spoke with reasonable command of English and were clear in confirming certain requests. Luggage drop off and storage were available too, there are vending machines at 2 floors and microwaves in the pantry. Also a coin washer and dryer that in total was about 500¥

Great value for the price”
Stayed here for four nights and I have no complaints at all. Hotel was easy to locate, quite near Sugamo station in fact. I also love that there's a Matsuya near it. It's honestly one of my favorite food joints in Japan. The room I had was quite clean, the facilities were top notch. I would suggest English cable channels, but it's not that big of a deal. The staff were polite and helpful too. All in all, it was a really good stay. One I wouldn't mind doing again on my next visit. P.S. I left my phone in the room when I checked out but I never doubted I'll retrieve it when I went back for it. And true enough, my phone was in the lobby, encased in plastic, ready to be collected. Thank you!

Stayed for nearly a week here. It is easy to find, a very quick walk from the Sugamo subway station which is conveniently on one of the main lines. Room is on the small side, but it was comfortable and cozy with good A/C, and the shower was good too. Very friendly staff and I was able to leave my luggage after checkout. I really liked this place. P.S. There is a supermarket really close by that has discounts on sushi around 8-9pm. Really good stuff and cheap! (SEIYA, in the basement)

One of the best budget hotels for solo female travellers in Japan”
The hotel is beside the FamilyMart convenience store, Seiyu grocery, the subway station and the JR Sugamo station. I chose it because it was the cheapest option out of all hotels, and it offered a single room for solo female travellers who valued privacy. The staff was super friendly and helpful. There was no heater in the room, but they gave me an extra blanket and made sure I had a comfortable stay. I highly recommend their single room to any solo traveller. Their room is small, but it was able to fit all of the stuff I bought from Japan plus my huge luggage.

Though not close to Tokyo station, it's quite a convenient spot if you're going to frequent Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and Harajuku areas. Being less than 5 minutes from Sugamo station(if you cut through the small alley in front of the Jonathan's and Pachinko parlors), it's extremely easy to access. The rooms are clean. The restrooms are supplied with nice shampoo, conditioner, body soap, face cleanser, and shaving foam. They also supply toothbrushes, toothpaste, disposable razors, fresh towels, and bottled water daily. The one quirk to this place if you have to leave your key with them when you go out and pick it up again when you return.

I spent a week here, nothing fancy, it's a business hotel, but if you need just to sleep in Tokyo, this is a really good dal. I got a nice single room, really clean and functional, really good wifi, good japanese breakfast and the staff was ally nice too. The area is full of restaurants, 7eleven, supermarkets and the station of Sugamo is just 2 min away. Info for tourist: Sugamo is a perfect location to visit the city, on the Yamanote line, is in the city center, really close to shibuya and the main places.

The staffs are excellent, they are very friendly and very helpful. Although this is just a 2-3 stars hotel, although the hotel building is a little bit old, it is excellent in everything including staffs, service, cleanness, location and reasonable price. Safety location, close to train, just 2 minutes walking to the train station, a lot of good restaurants around there too.

Convenient location and good service”
Here are the pros: (1) It is within 3min walk from JR Sugamo Station. Taking the JR Yamamoto Line from there, you can reach Shinjuku Station within 15min. (2) Many nice restaurants nearby which sell at a reasonable price. The Seiyu supermarket which opens 24hr is within 1min walk. (3) Staff are polite and helpful. Room was tidy and clean. The central heating was strong enough. There are microwave oven and laundry machines on the 8/F. Facilities are great. The only cons I could think of is the location. Sugamo is a convenient location to stay at when you aim to visit the middle-upper half of Tokyo (e.g. Shinjuku, Harajuku, Ueno, Imperial Palace, Hibiya, etc.). It will take you just 15-25mins. If you go further south (e.g. Roppongi, Tsukiji Fish Market, Odaiba, etc), it will take you 45-60mins. For the avoidance of doubt, this is NOT the fault of the hotel. The hotel itself is really really great. But please make sure you take into account the transportation time of your trip.

I was nervous about spending my holiday in Japan (especially in August). I thought it might be too hot, too expensive and impossible to communicate. But the Smile Hotel dispelled most of my worries. Yes, it was too hot outside, and on several days incredibly humid - but the hotel was beautifully air-conditioned and extremely comfortable. I was really impressed by many little touches by which the hotel made life more enjoyable - free slippers and razor, a trouser-press, free morning coffee, etc. Japan is also generally very expensive (though the poor showing of the Pound sterling against the Yen didn't help), but whereas restaurant food costs much more than in England, hotel rooms can even be cheaper: the Smile was superbly competitive in price. The breakfast offered included both Japanese and Western options. The reception staff were very friendly and polite. The station c. 5 mins away is conveniently on both the Yamanote loop line and a line of the Toei Subway.

I will definitely come back to this hotel next time. It’s easy to access to everywhere, many eatery nearby, has 24 hour family mart and seiyu supermarket next to hotel. One of the drug store in the walking street offer good price. Hotel is clean. This hotel using DHC toiletries.

Great place and great staffs for anyone who loves visiting Tokyo. Reasonal price in the town area, with both JR Line and subways. Even you are a female lone traveler who loves sightseeing at the late night, you can feel safe in this Sugamo area. Lots of restaurants at the late night, one is 24 hours. Love how close the hotel is from JR Sugamo even you carried a lot of bags. The room is not that small for Tokyo standard too. I have to say it's very good choice to stay here.

Perfect hotel for solo traveler.”
Small but clean. It has all the necessary facilities (including a laundry room). Convenient location. Sugamo JR Station is just 3-min walk from the hotel. 24-hr supermarket and convenience store are just 1-min walk away. Will come back for my next trip to Tokyo.

Met all of our needs conveniently, very pleased with the Smile Hotel brand. Will definitely use again in the future. This is the perfect place for people who want to stay somewhere cheap and convenient, but at the same time private, clean and of good-quality.

I got one single bed room for myself. It might be on the small side but comfortable nonetheless. The staff was very polite and welcoming not to mention very clean. The price is definitely reasonable for what was offered to me. Arigatou!

Worth every dime”
Very accommodating staff from front desk to room service. They also clean and change sheets everyday. Room os just awesome clean. And it is just literally a block away from sugamo station where you access for 2 mrt lines.

This hotel deserves a 10!”
We stayed here for 5 days and they were consistent with their service. Easy to locate, near JR Yamanote Sugamo and Toei Mita Line Sugamo. A lot of izakayas and Seiyu which is 24hrs grocery store are found within the area. Receptionist can speak minimal english but they are very helpful. They do housekeeping everyday! Room was not that big but we can move around freely while having 2 luggages. I recommend!

I enjoyed my stay very much. It is within 5 minutes of the trains station along the Yamanote Line, which is the loop that goes through the main trains stations (Shinjuku, Tokyo, Ueno, Shibuya, etc.). The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. I have to agree totally with the other reviews. I would definitely stay there again.

2 minute walk from Sugamo Station. A lot of nearby convenience stores and restaurants. Located halfway betweek Ueno/Marunouchi/Ginza Area and Shibuya/Harajuku/Shinjuku Area. Staff are very helpful and approachable. Rooms are well appointed and a good value for the price. Will definitely stay here again when I come back.
