Hotel Takahara features outdoor and indoor hot spring baths, only a 2-minute walk from the World Heritage Kumano Kodo Pilgrimage Routes. It offers free Wi-Fi throughout the property, a terrace and rooms with a Japanese interior and Western beds. Guests can go hiking through mountain paths or unwind in one of the hotel’s public hot spring baths. Takahara organizes charged activities such as walking the Kumano Kodo, dressing in Heian-era clothes or experience farming. Facilities include drinks vending machines, a shop and free parking. There are Spanish and Chinese speaking staff. Takahara is a 3-minute walk from both the Takijiri Oji Temple and the Takahara Kumano Jinja Shrine. JR Kii Tanabe Station is a 45-minute bus ride away. Upon reservation, the hotel offers a free shuttle to/from Gyubadoji Michinoeki Station, Takijiri and the Arisugawa bus stop. Air-conditioned rooms have a tatami (woven-straw) floor, an LCD TV and a small fridge. Guests sleep in Western beds. All rooms come with an attached private toilet, while bathrooms are shared. A Japanese breakfast and dinner with local dishes are served at the dining room.

Unbelievably amazing hospitality ”
I am a solo female traveller. On the first day of the hike I became very unwell and faint. Luckily I was staying at Takahara that night. The staff here were incredibly caring and drove me to the nearest doctor, after that they looked after me, bringing me food and anything I needed. They allowed me to stay an extra night to rest up and even drove me to the bus stop after my stay. I cannot thank the staff at Takahara enough!

The hostel is beautiful and comfortable with onsen (Japanese hot spring), the hostel keeper and his stuff are nice and polite, they can speak fluent English, though they are Japanese. Our dinner was traditional Japanese meal and was prepared by hostel keeper which was very delicious, hostel keeper introduced the foods to us patiently one by one, we felt like we are homed. It was an excellent stay.

Best place we stayed while walking the Kumano Kodo”
Could not recommend this place more. We hiked from Takijiri-Oji to here, as do most travellers. The rooms all have a view of the hills, and most mornings they are covered in mist. The (sex-separated) onsen baths are open in the morning and evening, meaning you can have a dip with a view before breakfast and supper. Accommodation includes a *very* delicious meal - on the night we stayed, we had a selection of sashimi, grilled local meats, pickled and grilled vegetables and miso soup. More than enough food, even after a long day hiking. Hospitality is excellent. This place is excellent value for money considering several other places we stayed - we would even consider using this place as our base for future hiking. There is a bus stop around 20 mins walk away, which allows for easy travel to other parts of the Kumano Kodo.

Exceptional”
This was a beautiful hotel with everything a traveler could want. The onsen was amazing, gorgeous and well kept. The room had all the amenities, lovely touches, and a fantastic view. The food was unbelievably good, and perfect for the weary hiker or anyone else for the matter.

No Complaints at all”
All rooms have small balcony with lay back chairs, amazing view over the mountains and especially the mist in the early morning, great breakfast and dinner package, excellent food, amazing service, can call them to ask their staff to pick up/drop off at at bus stations nearby, not much to do nearby apart from hiking along the Kumano kodo, a small shrine and observation deck with equally amazing view as it faces the same direction as the hotel room, but a bit lower down the mountain, Great place to get away from it all, perhaps not much to do for kids though, Overall, Fantastic!

Lovely host, lodging includes breakfast and dinner from seasonal supplies. The weather was very cold in Feb, we dip into the o den and few rounds to warm up. Clearly a wonderful place we wish to be back.
