Wonderful experience at Takaragawa Onsen's rotenburo-s! The staff were all friendly and fluent in English, and for my early check-out, they gave me a lift to the bus-stop to catch the public bus to Minakami Stn. I would love to visit Takaragawa Onsen again for a longer stay.
Our room was infested with bugs, and the hotel didn't really care”
We had an old decrepit room, in the old wing. The woodwork in the room was infested with large stink beetles. These were 1.5 to 4 cm in length. When we first checked in, there were about 15 littered throughout the room. When we complained the hotel, said they will help remove it, but they essentially also said that it was a take-it or leave it coz they were full. And they won't refund us. Despite clearing the room the first time around. The bugs kept appearing. We can only guess there were a whole lot hidden in the ceilings. We counted about 4-6 an hour. We kept clearing the ones that appeared, but it wouldn't stop. I woke out to my wife screaming as one flew directly into her hair. And a few crawled into bed with us during the night. Whilst the hotsprings itself was beautiful, the infestation completely ruined what would have been a romantic weekend. What amazes me is that we paid about USD300 for a night, and it felt like we checked into a roach motel. Horrible!
when u have satisfaction is less than expectation =disappointed ,there are others places nicer than”
they served an average food for kaiseki dinner but terrible for buffets in the morning . iwent to many ryokans they dont do like this. i was the first queue for checking in but i got the last for room keys due to the lady explained so many unnecessary things(just like my first time in ryokan though i told her i had experience before) anyway room in specious but quite old (she said just renovated) i love to stay in old ryokan but i mean inside the room they can make it better than here(anyway cant compare because that places got 9.7,9.4scores) i went to many ryokan injapan (okuhida, niigata, sanjo, ginzan, zao) and i do really want to go back to that places but not for takaragawa due to that factor. the service is quite weird. they dont don’t do like other premium ryokan for the onsen 3 of 4 are mixed which is required u to put on a dress from resort。if u are onsen lover u will understand it s not. anyway i think it s too much mixed onsen. so i prefer to be naked so only 1onsen i canuse
Amazing outdoor onsen baths”
Book this Ryokan for the outdoor onsens and the relative proximity to Tokyo, nothing else. The accomodation itself and food are basic (but yet comfortable enough) by Japanese standards (but very much acceptable in any case - just not the most high class luxurious Japanese Ryokans). The outdoor baths are among the most impressive in Japan, definitely a must do.
Very foreigner focussed!”
Perfect for foreign first time Onsen visitors as can cover up in the baths etc. However the food was buffet style and was kind of pricy compared to other places foreigners don't know about. Staff also varied in Nationalities and although they explained the rules in multiple languages many people didn't shower before bathing etc. Seems to be popular for those who are here for a week or so.
Overall was perfect but should’ve shuttle bus departure time later than 9.30am, too early to wake up, rush to have breakfast, pack stuffs and run to bus. Also hard to contact the front to book the shuttle bus from train station, staffs should be able to communicate in English.
Great outdoor onzen”
Pos - nice outdoor onzen along river view. - have bath cloth for male and female. So no shy to be naked. Con - old ryokan with lack of maintenance - room is dusty - disappoints with dinner buffet as with the room rate, should get kaiseki Dinner - Many many insects are in room even close the door and window - suggest to come here only onzen bath and sleep other place
Just nice view ”
The pros of this hotel is it located near the waterfall with an outdoor onsen. The view is very impressive, and natural however the resort itself is quite old. The resort can redecorate though the owner may want to show how old it is. The sliding doors fall out easily and it fell down to my children 2 times. The front desk staff is impolite but the staff at the restaurant are very nice. Both breakfast and dinner is below than what I expected. Paying this price I can get better resort which has nice staff and good food. The resort is just good at outdoor onsen. If you want to come just one day trip or don’t expect to much about the room and the food.
Good but not the best ”
Easy to arrive but make sure you have booked a shuttle bus seat through their official website before you go. Supper is just standard level, or even lower. Not enough choices of food and not quite delicious. Big size room with gorgeous room service. It makes me consider to visit to here again. Fresh feelings for mixed-bath. But remember to respect the others and don’t be impolite. The temperature of onsen isn’t hot enough. I think it’s suitable for couples and married thus they can enjoy the onsen together.
Best Onsen Ever”
Takaragawa Onsen is one of my best onsen experience. The hot springs have scenic view with snow. Staffs are very friendly. Room is clean and comfortable. Recommend to everyone who need the onsen experience to try this place.
I reserved 3 rooms. Just one room wall broke up.
Difficult to get there, but worth the visit”
Great onsen experience, but dated rooms. it was 200+ per night which was rather steep given the dated rooms, but the onsen and the food made it more worthwhile.
Best Onsen atmosphere ”
Onsen with awesome natural surroundings, traditional rooms and building, friendly and helpful stuffs. Location wise a little far need to go early, great driving there with free parking.
Amazing winter onsen experience”
Takaragawa Onsen is a bit out of the way, but they make up for it with a shuttle service to and from the nearest Shinkansen station, Joetsu station. I just wish that there are more than 1 trip to and from the hotel each day, particularly because the Shinkansen schedule stopping at Joetsu station was relatively scarce. Or at least, they could schedule the shuttle service to coincide with Shinkansen arrivals and departures so that wait time at the station is reduced. The stay is a little bit pricey, but I think it is very much justified. Everything worked out going there and we had an amazing experience. The surroundings were so beautiful. The outdoor onsen itself was also great. Service is as good as we could expect, particularly in a hotel that has an entirely different concept as what we were used to. We were assisted as soon as we arrived to change to slippers, to orient us about the hotel layout and the meal schedules (as they were all packaged in), and to change into yukatas.
First snow with Fantastic outdoor onzen”
We stay at annex building room 322 (IOt will be the best if you stay at room 323 at the corner of Annex building) on 15-17 Nov 2017 for 2 nights. There still have an autumn red leaves but just start falling. We had a first snow on 17 Nov 2017's morning falling during our breakfast. Value of the money.
old but gold”
lack of recent renovation shows lots of wear and tear at places. but all facilities work well though. the included breakfast and dinner are of exceptional standard. outdoor onsen is impeccable especially with some snow. pick the right timing with light snowing and trees changing colours and you get oriental kind of peaceful heavenly winter wonderland.
Excellent Outdoor Onsen Resort”
Location : You should use their free shuttle bus (book in advance) from Jomo Kogen St Onsen : Excellent mixed outdoor onsen. Perfect for couple Food : Great buffer dinner and breakfast Room : Clean Japanese Classic Room
Romantic snowscape onsen; great for couples”
Everything was great except the location is far off. The weather caused a late pick up was late and a later arrival at the hotel. The hot springs were excellent and was really large. The food is region specific so it depends largely on your preference.
Everything's perfect except..”
all is perfect except the bed.. it's way way way too thin until you can feel the tatami's divider punching your back. By the time I realized this, I'm way too lazy to ask for another set of futon to stack it over.. the rotenburo during snow is probably the best view i've ever seen my whole life.
One for the Books”
A stay here is definitely an experience for a lifetime. We stayed here during winter and the view is outstanding. The tatami rooms makes you feel like time travelling to Old Japan. The foods (both dinner and breakfast) are delicious and in great detail. The outdoor onsens are so beautiful, looks like something taken out of a magazine. The only downside is that it seems so far away from the city. You must try it even just for one night :)
