Warning - worst hotel we've ever seen”
they had electricity, an occasionally flushing toilet, and there was a roof and four walls
Firstly, this isn't Nuwara Eliya, it's 32km from N.E. When we asked about getting to N.E., the mgr said "how will you get there? Will you go by bus?", then when we nodded, "there are no buses" - bizarre!
We went to the 'town' of Hatton - friendly kids, but found it hard to get served in a cafe, told they were closed when there were still people arriving and ordering as we talked with them?!
The 'hotel' is a big concrete bunker in the middle of nowhere. No-one spoke to us on arrival, in fact no-one spoke much at all, just glared and pointed.
The room was basic, which is fine.
Mouldy water glass provided in the bathroom, only 1 towel for 2 guests (no response to request for one more). The shower was a trickle of cold water despite running the water heater for an hour prior.
Revolting bed - Blood stains on the bedcover and sheets! Dust-balls on the floor.
Bizarre brand new tv mounted on the wall about 2 inches too far from the antenna cable - still had its wrapping on so obviously not used often!
We were lucky enough to have an outdoor sitting area overlooking a drain - but better than nothing I guess.
The main problem with this place was the manager and his sidekick - determinedly unhelpful the entire time. We were upfront and said we'd probably look for somewhere actually in the town we wanted - he threatened to re-sell our room.
We were very reluctantly allowed to order some dinner - a soup each and some sandwiches, which were ok - but the sidekick stood right over our table the entire time, kind of creepy. Breakfast was bread & butter.
There was a distinctly menacing edge to all interactions, and we felt trapped.
Finally found somewhere to flee the next morning - they decided to double for dinner as "everything was for two" - who orders 2 soups each??
The young owner, who seemed lovely, charged us exorbitantly to drive is in to town but by that stage we just wanted to get out, so we didn't complain.
Basically the worst hotel experience ever
