We travelled as a couple and love every minute of our stay in tanaka-ya. Due to the only room available, we took up the 3pax room and paid the extra. It was obviously spacious with two super comfy futons and a coffee table. The table and additional space was great as we could hang around in that area of the room. Our room called bamboo room was nearest to the entrance, bathroom, toilet and computer. Wifi is fast and free. Thankfully the rest of the folks are respectful in not making too much noise. We wanted to experience a machiya type setting and we got it with tanaka-ya. It will not be for you if you like total privacy or your own bath/toilet. Its near to kiyomizu dera, couple of stops away from fushimi inari, minutes walk from nishiki, subway, gion district, teramachi, pontoncho and yasaka jinja area ans gion district. Located by the kamogawa river and you can run along the river which was scenic. You can even spot a geisha at the next alley, if you are lucky (we got lucky). On the last day, we got a taxi to kyoto station and took only 7mins in snow. Love it.
Neat little Ryokan”
Tanaka-ya Ryokan is a beautiful little Ryokan nestled in a nice part of Kyoto. It is close to the Kiyomizu-dera temple which was astounding. Short walk to some of the busier city areas, and some decent food options within a short walk or train ride away. It is usually at least a 10-15 minute walk from public transport, and could be a little difficult to find without maps/gps systems from your phones, but the managers provide you with very detailed instructions to get to the Ryokan. The rooms are small sized, with firm comfortable futons (our preference), and has generally a clean interior. Occasionally we saw some bugs around, but this did not bother us. The showers and bathrooms are communal, but do not appear to be sufficient for the Ryokan, we rarely had to wait for other occupants when needing to use the amenities. The manager is friendly, and happy to provide recommendations. We ate at a beautiful soba restaurant which was one of my wife's food highlights of the trip. We did not eat at the Ryokan, so I cannot comment on the food, other than to say we were offered green tea, coffee and snacks upon arrival and had this available during our stay. Overall a most pleasant stay at Tanaka-ya Ryokan
Smart stay in Kyoto!”
A typical japanese house to live like locals do, in a perfect Gion alley, just a short walk from many sightseeing places and services like 7eleven, bus stop, metro station. Maybe the shared bathroom and the only shared shower room are a little busy during the weekend, but always super clean. The lovely landlady is very kind and helpful, she speaks English and gave us advice to see the city, good places to eat, and where to find the best events. We wanted to stay a night more, so she managed to give us the same room at the same price, even with 24h notice only! She also gave us a present when we checked out! We felt like we were treated as grandchildren, we will never forget that. Overall, really good value for money, I'm very happy to have chosen Tanaka-ya Inn and I absolutely recommend it!
A very pleasant stay on a strategic location”
We travelled with a kid and stayed in Tanaka-ya Inn for six nights. We enjoyed the stay in the tatami bedroom. The room and shared bathrooms were very clean. Tami-san really helped to make us feel at home. There is a wide range of breakfast options close to the inn. Many of Kyoto's attractions are within walking distance. If you walk out of the door there is a big chance you'll walk into someones picture, because the inn is located in a very cosy and pittoresque alley.
We enjoyed our stay at the Tanaka-ya ryokan and will consider it next time - although we'll definitely request a larger room. The guesthouse is just around the corner from one of the most charming allies of old tea houses in Kyoto and a short walk to the Gion, Kawaramachi, and Pontocho districts. We spent our evenings after dark strolling through the old neighborhoods and shrines, dropping into restaurants and bars. We saw a geisha on her way to work and a maiko skipping along the street one day, but mostly didn't keep an eye out for them. The owner is charming and speaks pretty good english. She was really nice and provided yoghurt and tea each morning and croissants on our final morning. There's a mini-fridge and microwave, so otherwise for breakfast we bought food from the nearby mini-mart and ate in our room each day. I wasn't a huge fan of the shared sinks and shower. Had to wait a couple of times for the shower, and it was awkward to interact with strangers while brushing my teeth in the morning. I prefer to be alone and not worry about how I look/act first thing. We had the smallest room in the house (a double) and it was perfectly fine for the first two days, but got old. I'd suggest requesting one of the triples - they are much bigger and always had only two people in them while we were there. Our room was small enough that we tripped over all our stuff the whole time, and didn't have a table or even tray to eat breakfast on, so we set up on the few feet of floor space we had. It would be a great room for a single. Buses are very convenient and frequent along the nearby large streets. Taxi from Kyoto Station was 800 yen. If you have much luggage, it might be hard to squeeze onto a bus, so it's worth the extra yen for the taxi.
A Small Gem in the Quiet Section of Gion”
It was a wonderful experience. I stayed in the annex, very close to the main building. The hotel is in an ideal location, on the quiet southern edge of Gion. The owner and her son were both welcoming and helpful. I was especially grateful to them for contacting me through Agoda to let me know that I had left behind a necklace (something with great sentimental value) and then arranging to send it to me. The hotel is small but charming with traditional Japanese tatami rooms, and immaculately clean. A fridge and microwave are available in the common area for all to use, along with a water dispenser with both hot and cold spigots. Tea bags and instant coffee are also available. I hesitate to complain about anything at all because I received such wonderful treatment here, but I did have one issue: the sheets and pillowcases smelled rather strongly of bleach which bothered me as I am sensitive to harsh chemicals. Nevertheless, I would stay at the Tanaka-ya again, in a heartbeat, and I am already dreaming about my next trip ..
Feels like a home away from home”
Had a wonderful time at Tanaka-ya Inn. Had to get a taxi to take me there because my maps were a bit off, but once I had found the inn, it was easy to locate it again from most directions. It is only two streets away from Kiyomizu-Gojo station and easy to walk to nearby train stations/bus stops. The Innkeeper was such a lovely lady who would welcome me back after spending the day sightseeing, and was always on hand if I needed assistance with anything, even trivial. I spent five days here and I will definitely go back. It is right in the heart of Gion, and it's true that you can spot Geisha walking the streets at certain times (but don't get in their way!). Close to many great temples and the shopping district as well!
A stay in the heart of Gion”
We had a very pleasant stay at the Tanaka-ya Ryokan. The room was very clean and comfortable, though we did see three tiny bugs in there. Unfortunately the place didn't have a japanese bath. But that being our only "major" complaints, this Ryokan had a few outstanding qualities. The location is perfect for anyone interested in exploring the more traditional parts of Kyoto. Major shrines and temples are close-by and the district of Gion is a must see for any traveler in Kyoto. All of those are within short walking distance and make for a nice day-activity. The staff was very friendly, giving us all information we could have hoped for and a handy map that showed a few restaurants, conbinis and the general surroundings. Even though the pillows were a bit soft, the futons were over all very comfortable. It might not be for sleep-ins, as the walls of traditional japanese houses are thin and as soon as every other guest wakes up, it can be a bit noisy.
Perfect, Cozy Place”
Location: Incredible — right in the heart of the quiet, quaint historic Gion district in Kyoto. A four minute walk across the bridge to the bus stop to/from Kyoto Station (which is only an 8 minute bus ride away!). The various metro stations nearby are only a 5-15 minute walk away, too, depending on which one you need to go to. Fushimi Inari was only ten minutes away! Arashiyama was much farther, but within reach of bus + metro transfers. There are lots of yummy restaurants around, and a 7/11 and a Lawson are also in short walking distance. We were very lucky to see giggling maiko/elegant geiko walking around the alley of the ryokan and one alley over. It was such an honor to see!! Accommodation: Tamie-san was a phenomenal host. It felt like we were visiting an old friend’s home, as she was extremely hospitable and kind. She offered hot matcha and snacks and gave us a plethora of tips/advice on our Kyoto itinerary. The ryokan itself was very warm and cozy and beautifully decorated. There were four rooms in the main guesthouse with two bathrooms on the second floor and a shower room on the first. She gave us each a towel and slippers to use around the ryokan, and had a toothbrush and mouthwash for use in the sink area. The shower room had bath soap and shampoo and heater, too. The tatamis/futons were great and the blanket was soooo lovely. It was clean, well-managed and the perfect place of rest during two rainy, cold December days. Even though the floors were rickety with each step, it was a great honor to experience. I would highly recommend this casual, cozy ryokan for its significant value of ambience and experience.
We loved our stay at Tanaka-ya! The family running the inn is very friendly and sweet — they left thoughtful touches (strawberries!) for us during our stay, and were kind and helpful. The location was great, very quiet, and our room was very comfortable.
Wonderful, well-located, traditional Japanese Ryokan with kind and welcoming host”
Tanaka-ya Ryokan is situated in heart of historic Gion district yet also very peaceful. It is close to many Buddhist Temples and attractions, and there are lots of good family run restaurants nearby. Easy access to the river which is beautiful in Cherry blossom season. Tamie was very welcoming and helpful. She brought us tea when we arrived and established a great rapport with our 10-year old and surprised us with fresh strawberries one night.
Adorable and Awesome”
We had a great time at Tanaka-ya. Our room was the right size for us and super adorable. It was pretty easy for us to get to. Tami spoke pretty good English and was super helpful We went to a bar right down the street our first night and ended up sitting at the bar with two business men and a geisha. We watched Ping-Pong on T.V. it was awesome! Overall we loved it, it was the best choice for us.
Loved our stay at Tanaka-ya! Great location in a very traditional neighborhood, but also very close to walk to main shopping areas, temples, restaurants. Rooms were spacious and traditional futons were comfortable. Even though it was a shared bathroom, we never saw anyone else using it. Comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
Amazing stay, good host”
Tanaka-san was very welcoming and efficient. The facilities were very clean, comfortable, and classically Japanese. The area we stayed in was a great location and in a beautiful side street. I would gladly stay here every time I come to Kyoto. The value for my money is top notch. I highly recommend.
Wonderful traditional Japanese experience!”
We really enjoyed our stay at Tanaka-ya as we had everything we needed and the location was great! It was spotlessly clean and surprisingly homely yet simply furnished and decorated. I would have no hesitation in staying here again or recommending it to others :-).
Great location and traditional experience.”
Loved the traditional rooms with all the modern comforts. The hostess was spectacular. We were able to check in early and were greeted with tea and snacks. The rooms were gracious and clean and there were multiple bathrooms facilities so sharing was no issue. The location in the gion district was amazing and in close walking distance to many sights and the subway to explore other areas of the city. It was not hard to find as many other reviews suggest. Prior to check in the owner provided detailed information in English and Japanese to find the hotel. The directs were clear and very helpful. We took a taxi from Kyoto station and the driver found the place quickly and easily and cost was less than 1000 yen. There is also a subway nearby and many buses which was very convenient.
A taste of old Kyoto”
If you want to experience living in an traditional Japanese inn in old Kyoto, this is the place for you. Great location, right in the middle of old Kyoto, close walking distance to trains, stores, restaurants and attractions. Nice friendly staff. A little cramped but that is how old Japanese houses are. All in all, a great experience.
Really good - must try”
We spend four nights at Tanaka-ya Inn. Amazing place and location
If you want to experience an authentic Japanese guesthouse in the heart of old Kyoto, this is the place for you. The futons are comfortable and cozy, perfect to sleep in after a long day wandering the city sights. The owner and her son are kind and accommodating, and show true Japanese hospitality to their guests. The location itself is outstanding, a short train ride from Fushimi Inari-taisha and right on the edge of Gion. I saw four geisha total in one night walking back to the inn from dinner! As this is a traditional guesthouse, the walls are thin, so being quiet and respectful is important to ensure everyone in the space has a pleasant stay. Noisy neighbours ruin the experience for everyone (as I learned on one of my two nights that I stayed).
The host is a really friendly person! If you want to try Japanese-style living, then choosing Tanaka-ya :))
