Very good”
One thing to be aware of, when you leave every day you need to turn off the air conditioning to your room. This means it gets very hot in the room and takes an hour or so to cool down if the weather is very hot. Otherwise the lady who runs the place is very nice. We had free water bottles each day and a fruit bowl when we got back our first day.

Great experience, interesting location”
The owner was lovely , welcomed with fruit and so friendly, as was her son. Very hot in Kyoto during our time made visit tough, as being outside was not too enjoyable. Room was as expected for Ryokan, though communal toilets were like mini saunas. Interesting location but far from other things. If you want to try an authentic stay for a couple nights would recommend, but not like a hotel in any of the other cities we stayed in Japan, plus you are on own for breakfast.

Wonderful genuine ryokan experience ”
Totally enjoyed our stay. This is a great traditional area. And a wonderful traditional home. Many places put up photos of rooms that look traditional, but they are not. The guest houses in this area all appear to be genuine traditional homes.. Our hostess was absolutely wonderful. Had a surprise punnet of strawberries for us when we got home after a long first day out. What a treat. There is coffee /tea facilities just outside the room. The futon beds were wonderful and the fluffy comforters ever so warm. The facilties are shared, but are very clean and well maintained. No issues at all there. The location is fantastic. We were located smack in the middle of the geisha district. We saw maiko (geishas in training) going to their lessons, as well as geikos in the evenings. 5 in total during our 2 night 3 day stay. Highly recommended for those looking for a true ryokan experience. (not the snazzy posh ones) Do note that there are stairs, so for those unable to manage flights of stairs, this accommodation may not be suitable.

On the quiet outskirt of Gion.”
The ambience is good at this location. Quiet but close to the area of Gion. The toilet is near to the room but the bath is on the ground floor. If you are sensitve to noise, the floor board does make movement around the corridor very obvious. I tip toe most of the time. When I stand up , I have to be careful not to knock the hanging light or the roof of the room. Comfort is compromised if you are used to space. The is no reception area and minimum interaction with host at checkin (5min) to hand in a deposit of 2000 yen and checkout (2min) to collect your deposit and a small gift. The checkout time is 10 am. The pictures showing the inn is very quaint however after checking in you will be walking about 1 min to a separate double storey building where the rooms are located.

Wonderful, well-located, traditional Japanese Ryokan with kind and welcoming host”
Tanaka-ya Ryokan is situated in heart of historic Gion district yet also very peaceful. It is close to many Buddhist Temples and attractions, and there are lots of good family run restaurants nearby. Easy access to the river which is beautiful in Cherry blossom season. Tamie was very welcoming and helpful. She brought us tea when we arrived and established a great rapport with our 10-year old and surprised us with fresh strawberries one night.

Wonderful stay!”
We loved our stay at Tanaka-ya! The family running the inn is very friendly and sweet — they left thoughtful touches (strawberries!) for us during our stay, and were kind and helpful. The location was great, very quiet, and our room was very comfortable.

Very conveniently and cozy ryokan experience ”
The old lady who runs the Roman is very sweet and speaks just enough English to help with basic questions. She was very helpful a d provided a lot of helpful tips about the surrounding area and how to get around. They also surprised us with a complimentary gift of fresh strawberries in our room on the last day of our stay. Check in and check out was quick and wasy, and their website has helpful info on how to get to them from Kyoto Station. All in all, very happy with the experience.

Amazing hostess, highlight of our Kyoto trip!”
Tamie's place feels like home :) Her rooms are incredibly orderly, and I had the best sleep in months there. Her home is also very close to many historical areas of Kyoto. I'd come back in a jiffy! :)

HIghlight of our trip”
I have been thinking about whether to tout the kind hostess Mrs. Yamike...other people may be disappointed not to get so much one on one time, help, advice, and strawberries from this delightful lady. It made us feel like we were with a host family but with full privacy. The room is spotless, the bathroom (separate from the shower room) is shared but spotless. The heater was great and the decorations brought you back to a time.... It was a wonderful experience. Please stay here!

Great location”
If you want to experience an authentic Japanese guesthouse in the heart of old Kyoto, this is the place for you. The futons are comfortable and cozy, perfect to sleep in after a long day wandering the city sights. The owner and her son are kind and accommodating, and show true Japanese hospitality to their guests. The location itself is outstanding, a short train ride from Fushimi Inari-taisha and right on the edge of Gion. I saw four geisha total in one night walking back to the inn from dinner! As this is a traditional guesthouse, the walls are thin, so being quiet and respectful is important to ensure everyone in the space has a pleasant stay. Noisy neighbours ruin the experience for everyone (as I learned on one of my two nights that I stayed).

Very good”
By the very nature of the type of property the amenities are going to be basic. They clearly state that toilet and bathing facilities are communal. Possibly wasn't aware just how much noise would travel from other parts of the building into the room. My only real complaint was the wifi which worked for about 10 minutes before disappearing for the rest of my stay. The woman who ran the place is very nice and actually wanted to give me a brolly when I was leaving the place for my next destination. I feel I am not who this accommodation is aimed at, I have said I would recommend this place to my friends because if we had come across this place 20 years ago we would have been well pleased. Having said that without any tv, radio or any other distractions I did have a great sleep. Definitely an experience.

Nice area to stay”
Very nice area to stay. We stayed here for 3 nights and saw Maiko every time we went back or forth. A little bit longer walk to subway stations (bus station is nearer) but it's nice enough to walk :) The owner is so kind. She even prepared the 2,000Y notes when returning the key deposit for us - it is lucky money in Japan. The house is old, so please be careful when you walk around the house, if not your steps will cause some sounds. Among 3 rooms we stay, Sakura room seems to have the smallest space but the most quiet as no sound when people are walking by.

The owner was very kind, lovely and helpful (i.e. kept our luggage after check out time even she had nearly no space for it). She greeted us with japanese tea. We stayed for three nights. In that short time the owner brought one day fresh fruits for every room and we had two times new towels. It was one of our best stays in Japan. The room was very clean and comfortable. The amenities were excellent. The location is perfect. The atmosphere is amazing.
