Find hotels near Teshikaga in Kushiro, Japan

The positives: Beautiful lakeside location. But do make sure you have a hotel room from the 6th floor or up. Otherwise you'll be looking at trees instead of the lake. The room itself is spacious. There are a few nice shops in the basement. The negatives: The hotel is a bit dated. The furniture and carpets are heavily used and stained. The male (japanese) staff at reception was rude. Very rare in Japan to experience this. It is a large hotel with only 2 washing machines/dryers. Way too little. People were lining up for them. But most important: the location is super distant from anything. Having diner outside the hotel is a drive of 25 minutes to the nearest town, Teshikaga. So you do need a car. My recommendation.: Take a hotel at lake Akan and plan a day trip to Lake Kussharo.

We made the booking for this hotel out of limited options coupled with a tight timeline. It was kind of a make do choice for us since the location and setup wasn't the usual multi storey chain hotel style that we were used to. The initial find was tricky as we had no idea how it looked like and the signage was in Japanese only. GPS did it's job and we arrived without too much hassle after all. Given the little street lighting, arriving after sunset without prior knowledge might be tricky, so do plan accordingly. The room we were allocated was surprisingly huge, with multiple chairs and a decently sized coffee table. Private bathroom is large in comparison to the usual city hotels we were used to for the rest of the trip. This hotel is ran by an elderly couple whom are very friendly. Hotel location is simply peaceful and the spacious hotel room makes it extremely enjoyable to simply relax and enjoy the countryside. It's a very pleasant experience and we plan to be back again.

Hostel is set in the quiet countryside. Much greenery. Beautiful patch of flowers just beside the hostel. Room was spacious. Big area for dining and interaction if you want to be outside your room. Amenities - shared toilet and bath area (separated by gender)- clean. Mr K and his family were very hospitable. The meals prepared by them (I had dinner and breakfast) were delicious- Japanese meals. Also joined the unkai tour led by Mr K. Very lovely to see the sea of clouds- but need to start at 4am. Worthwhile trip. Note - unkai dependent on weather. Good to have your own transport- otherwise best to make arrangement. There are public buses -very few and seasonal- do check operational time and period of operation. We thank Mr K and his family for a very lovely stay.

The breakfast and dinner were very well thought out. A lot of pride is put into making your experience very homey and welcoming. The bedroom is cosy, not 5-star but decorated like a home/lodge - feels slightly European somehow. The view from the window at breakfast is unbelievably peaceful. The outdoor onsen is fun - probably not as grand as some onsen hotels out there, but the trees and birds accompany you. The room walls are a bit thin as per most Japanese homes, so you may hear sounds from the house, but still very good sleep. I would return here again if I could and if I had more time I would like to stay longer. It is very near the beautiful lakes kussharo and mashu, as well as a great ramen shop.
