Lovely space ”
I had a great stay. The hotel is beautifully laid out, and my upper balcony room was classy and spacious. My only complaint on that front is that the lighting was a little poor for reading. Breakfast was tasty, but I wasn’t impressed with what I ordered at lunch. The staff is friendly and helpful. I’ll be back!
Lovely boutique hotel in Galle Forte ”
Lovely small boutique hotel in Galle Forte with a courtyard restaurant. The rooms were well presented and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Despite not having egghoppers on the breakfast menu, they went out of their way to get some for me for breakfast.
Centrally located, quality furnishings”
Our room was smaller than we expected but it was very clean and the quality of the bed linen and furniture was fantastic. Fortaleza is in the centre of the small fort area. The quality of the food served was excellent, but very expensive. No tv, safe or fridge and noisy from the room above. The bed was a standout.
Nice building hotel, well reserved”
It was fantastic, hotel just right in the middle of Fort area where you can spend whole day exploring the Fort and the shop/spa around. The buildings all are well reserved with the nice people and many choices of restaurants.
Beautiful new guest house”
I stayed for two nights in Galle at the Fortaleza Hotel. I had a beautiful room on the second floor which looked down upon a street below. It was relatively quiet during the day and in the evenings...absolutely quiet at 9:00PM. Inside the old fort area...everything shuts down at 9:00 and noise is not a concern. The bedroom was huge and offered a very comfortable bed. The pillows were to die for ;) There is no phone or TV in the room, which I cherished.....yet Wifi connection was excellent to allow me to check mail on the internet from my bedroom. It is a private / family owned hotel with only 3 rooms. The owners live on the property as well I believe. The hotel had a good breakfast menu, yet.... a different menu for bed and breakfast clients....(which I was)... which I found a tad disappointing. The outside guest menu offered much more choice and variety. I ate only one evening meal here and found the food fine. The old fort area itself offered a variety of places to dine as well and so I liked to eat outside for variety of menu. A wonderful spa is just up the street and co-owned by Fortaleza Hotel. Excellent treatments and products are available. The hotel is within the walls of the fort and is breathtakingly beautiful. Easy walking distance to all the local shops, historic sites and places to dine. I highly recommend the Fortaleza to anyone looking for a historic property to stay in. I would most certainly stay there again.
Lovely Boutique Hotel with Friendly Service ”
Run by a lovely British couple, this new boutique hotel offers service with a smile. They made me and my Dad feel at home and offered their bikes for free so we could pedal around town. A great cooked breakfast and kebabs you could cook yourself for dinner which was a nice touch whilst chilled music was played in the background. Highly recommend staying here.
Great location in the middle of town and staff always on hand. We still in an out building 30m down the road that was probably slightly better for relaxing. No swimming pool which is a miss if youre there for a while
Perfect for one night ”
If you are planning to do sightseeing of the old part of Galle you should consider staying overnight at Fortaleza hotel. Owing to its location, unique character and availability of a very decent restaurant with an open patio it makes this small hotel one of the bright spots on the tourist map of old Galle offering at the same time reasonable prices.
Room smells of insecticide ”
Although location is strategic, the entire place smelled of insecticide. No tv in the room nor at lobby/restaurant. There's no air conditioning in the restaurant & heat is intolerable.Just too expensive for a place so lacking in amenities
Great location & female staff ”
Great location in the middle of the Fort city, short & cheap tuk tuk ride from Galle train station. The female staff were informative & helpful. The fellas in the restaurant/bar could have been a little more attentive - forgot things more than once and slow to take orders. The restaurant was ranked very highly in Lonely Planet which was misleading - it's very ordinary, no point of difference, and overpriced. We're more than happy to pay for quality / local food but something is missing here. If you just want a bed in centre of the city it's great for that. If you're a traveller looking for basic foreign food that's on offer too but if you want something more creative with a local feel then this isn't your place. Not a criticism just wasn't quite right for us.
It's not a 5 star hotel. No value for money”
location is the only good thing. But there are plenty of hotels within Galle fort. So u can pick any others. Our room is right at the entrance of the hotel, which is very noisy and unsecured. I closed the door at night. But in the morning, my door was open and their cat was in my room, which scared me!!! The room is very small with no mini bar no kettle, no proper closet. The bath room has no where to hang towel. Towels are put in the room!! There is no constant hot water. After one taking shower, you need to wait at least 10 minutes to get the hot water. Staff is ok. Breakfast has very limited choice as it's set menu. Besides you even need to pay 3 dollar for baked beans! They even don't have a proper reception/lobby. Just a torn sofa at the entrance which is just outside my room. It's definitely not a 5 star standard. 2/3 star most. But the room rate is 5 star standard in Sri Lanka. Not value for money!!
Fantastic location and gorgeous room”
We had a fantastic night at the Fortaleza hotel - the small boutique nature was something which I loved. The decor is beautiful and the rooms are extremly comfortable. The courtyard area was such a treat - a little oasis. We enjoyed a great happy hour and breakfast in there. The location is second to none.
Nightmare hotel experience”
-No water for bathing for the entire night -The staff is friendly and helpful but not the lady boss after our experience staying there -No staff to assist after 11PM - Small and don't worth the price
Honeymoon stay at Fortaleza”
Fortaleza was a beautiful stop for us at the end of our honeymoon tour of Sri Lanka. Our room was beautiful, and staff were friendly and attentive to our needs. One inconvenience was our hot water heater - it accommodated only a very short shower. Food in general was delightful, though we got food poisoning from one of the last meals we ate in Sri Lanka and it may well have been our lunch at Fortaleza. We would recommend Fortaleza to others - though we'd stay elsewhere if visiting Galle again.
This is a hard hotel to rate because we got a room outside of the hotel itself (but managed by it), so we never actually got to see much of the hotel, excpet the reception and courtyard. The Annexe is owned by a British expat currently living in Japan who has taken this property and refurbished it as a home. It felt like you were staying at a (well-healed) friend's house, with all the courtesies and comforts implied. Tastefully refurbished and elegantly planned, it is off the streets, tucked away as part of the fabric of the town itself (the roof allows a "Mary Poppins" view of other terr-cotta town roofs without the chimneys). It felt like you were living there and belonged; not just passing through as a tourist. The staff who have been pushed out to look after you do look after you and are very keen to help deepen the whole experience - let them. They know what they are doing and you are in good hands. A great resting place to really explore the town and it's neighbourhood.
Heart of Galle”
We had a very nice stay, had one room in each of their two buildings. Each room was sparkling and clean, the food in the restaurant is quite nice and reasonable, and the location is right in the middle of the Fort part of Galle. Good service, easy communication and zero issues.
A good boutique hotel”
I would rate it as a nice boutique hotel very artisticly and tastefully doned. Very friendly and helpful staff. The owner Natalie was very warm, welcoming and accommodating. The restaurant menu was primarily western and could do with the inclusion of a Sri Lankan dish or two but other than that it was good. The only draw back was the size of the room which was small with no space to stow the suitcases and not much sitting space or furniture either.
Nice boutique hotel”
I loved this hotel. we felt at home at this place. It is a small hotel with a few rooms, and the rooms were so spacious. It is in a very good location as we were able to walk around the small town by foot. A place i will definitely return to.
Brilliantly furbished with great staff”
We truly enjoyed our stay at fortaleza. The hotel is a brilliantly furbished old house that is centrally located. Many great details. The staff is great. There is restaurants and shopping all around. Highly recommended.
Comfortable, friendly stay - relaxed atmosphere”
We had a great three nights at The Fortaleza. We stayed in the Library room - the bed was so comfortable, great pillows and linen. I loved the style and feel of the hotel. The dining area also had a really relaxed feel to it, a lovely ambience. The service was excellent, couldn't fault it. We didn't eat in the Hotel at night, but the breakfasts were very good - I mentioned that I wished the menu was more traditionally Singalese, and the next morning I was treated to a great string hopper breakfast with several side dishes. It was a fabulous way to end our trip to Sri Lanka, and I would highly recommend a few nights here.
