Not Good for the Money ”
If this were a budget guesthouse, it would still be a bad deal. The facility has potential but they have let it run down. It sits on a beach point with great views. But it rained last night and the roof leaked into the bed of one of our friends. The rooms (two that we know) are damp and smell. The breakfast is ok, but not great. The restaurant staff is not well trained for a hotel of this cost. Unless they put money into this hotel, it won’t be around long.
Old World Charm”
The Closenberg is a lovely hotel with old world charm. The rooms are adequate, all with a sea view. The place is surrounded by water on three sides and the entrance to the isthmus is shared with a police station so the place is very safe. The pool is beautiful, right next to the cliffs going down to the sea. The breakfast is good with fresh fruit and eggs to order. (It might be nice to have whole wheat bread instead of just sliced white bread for toast.) We were very happy with our stay at the Closenberg.
Good stay !!”
Hi ,it's a nice hotel to stay with good location very close to the galle fort and Dutch hospital.the pool at the hotel need cleaning lot of dry leaves n the water was not that clean but again the pool with a view excellent view.the food at the hotel is ok not that great but the Sri Lankan curry and rice is good .i stayed for 3 days n my stay was good .the staff is friendly n the room are clean .the guy at the reception is nice and helpful we had to checkout at 2am n they gave us packed breakfast n some fruit witch we really appreciated ..please go ahead n book it 😄😄 and njoy your stay . .
A spectacular location but overall the hotel is very tired looking and there is obviously very little money spent on keeping up what originally a very beautiful house and gardens. The rooms were adequate with a lovely veranda overlooking the bay - great for drinks at night with friends or family. The rooms were large and the bathrooms were also of a good size. Safe's in the room didn't work. The breakfast and food on offer was good but the overall price of the room per night was on the high side and may well put people off. Checkout was a nightmare - we were off to catch a flight and nothing was ready - incorrect charging for breakfast - same breakfast, different costs per day (?). No connection for credit card payments which meant that we had to take one of the staff by car to an ATM to pay for the room. This was totally unacceptable for the price paid. If you want charm and price is not an issue then I would say go, otherwise I would pass.
Excellent location and superb potential.”
I booked the hotel looking at pictures on the internet and also looking at the location. Excellent location with unparalleled views from the rooms. But it was such a disappointment. very untidy, poor attitude of the staff. Cleanliness was non-existent. Very poor facilities.
Worst hotel for any type of vacation”
I visited this hotel on 23 Dec'18 for two days and left the hotel after staying just for a night. I booked this hotel due to great location and view and mostly because of rates. And trust me this hotel has only these pros. Apart from these the hotel sucks at each and every possible parameter. Beginning with staff, they are over aged people somehow managing their job and maintaining the hotel and almost give no response to whatsoever asked from them. The rooms are somewhat okaish but lack in every possible facility. The wifi is slower than 2G, only one or two lights work out of many, the intercom doesn't work, there is no television, the fridge kept is rusty and very dirty, the almirahs are dirty, the washroom is dirty, towels have stains on them, the washbasin chokes after a while. The food is pathetic. There is no room service. We asked them for sandwiches, which were the worse sandwiches we had since birth. And to worsen the situation, the ketchup had insects in it. Similar situation for breakfast - the non veg looked stale, the fruits had flies on them, the fried tomatoes had tiny holes in them, etc etc... a complete mess. And to add to our misery there are stray animals inside the hotel. Cats and dogs can be seen freely roaming around even in dining rooms. And the staff seems unconcerned about it. And they just laugh when you complain about animals to them. We even found some blood stains of animal footprints beside pool area. We were shocked and frightened. Even in the peak season this hotel is nearly vacant. No surprises for that. It nearly resembles the hotel from the movie "The shining". Please do not book the hotel anytime soon even if you hear or read any good review about it. Definitely not if you are planning a vacation with your spouse and family. And yes the view from the hotel and from the hotel room is great.
vintage hotel but not that good”
the decoration of the hotel is amazing with great sea view. but honestly, the facilities are really old and need to be replaced. and we need to take Tuk-Tuk to go to the Galle Fort, a little bit inconvenient.
Ok, this is the dilapadated colonial charm that you always want to find, but it’s only 1 in 20? or 50? Incredible old building with large common rooms and amazing ocean views, even from the bedrooms. Not walking distance from Galle Fort, but so what? It has a view of the fort (from the point, not the rooms) and you fall asleep to the waves. Perched on a bit of a cliff which enhances view but makes beach access more difficult. The water in the infinitey pool was a pale green, safe for swimming but not exactly crystaline. More like a favorite swimming hole back home. The staff were mostly 30-plus year veterans of the establishment and the borderline grumpy initial treatment was quickly overcome with a dose of small talk. Then it was warm grins and great stories. They have dealt with their fair share of picky travellors who complain about the things that should be expected from a place that shares an unclear border with shambolic. We loved the place and hope to return!
Lovely location, friendly staff but noisy.”
Great views of see, elevated colonial building, good food. Unfortunately they like to organise weddings and discos with extremely loud music into the early hours. Sleep becomes a luxury in these circumstances!
One of my favourite places in the world, quirky old world charm and fantastic staff and service. ”
My fourth visit to the Closenberg Hotel and I can't wait to get back there again in the future. Hotel is a little tired as are many of the hotels in Galle of its age and era. That is part of its charm. The best thing about the hotel is the staff and service. Nothing is too much trouble and everything is arranged with care and enthusiasm. The location and outlook are perfect and you fall asleep each night to the sound of the ocean. Peaceful and private, it is a joy. Barb : ))
We stayed here for the last night of our trip to Sri Lanka and thought it the best of all the places we stayed. The staff couldn't do enough for us, the rooms were large and clean and the hotel itself was fantastic. Thoroughly recommend.
if you want to get away from things”
Staff friendly - really helpful and polite. let me stay and check out later as it wasn't too busy this time. Disappointed there was not so much in Sri Lankan style food on the menu. Breakfast was good. Pool is idyllic. and balcony views on A floor are lovely. Somebody told me there were many rats playing outside the hotel at night...after walking through Galle modern town you can see many of them by the sea wall ...more than I've ever seen. Something had been scuttling/ making a mess in my bathroom...being scared of rats....I automatically assumed it had to be them!! Could be wrong!! No TV's in this hotel which is nice...wifi is great...and a bathtub to relax The staff are great but they do have a habit of talking - even shouting to each other outside in the corridor ..totally not aware that the guests can hear them. A bit a hike from Unatawatuna and The Fort ......30 minutes hot walk or short tricycle ride...not much options for eating anywhere but the hotel. Beautiful setting especially if you don't really want to go to too many places
nice hotel,convenient location”
There is buffet for breakfast only when the hotel is full. The hotel is close to the fort and the lighthouse and is facing the sea.Hot water and air conditioner is OK but the facilities are old and the bathtub is somelike dirty. Anyway, it is a nice hotel to stay and I recommand it.
Good but not a 4 star”
Stayed for one night here in Jan. Asked the concierge to book a table for dinner for us in nearby Galle and when we arrived they had no booking for us. Was raining and hotel don't have umbrellas to give customers. Tried to rip us off on an airport taxi too Pool and bar are good with good bar staff. Views are great and it's very handy for Galle.
we really enjoyed our stay. the staff were extremely polite and courteous. food was excellent.old world ambience and the scenic location was pleasing. would have been convenient if wifi was available
This hotel is desperately looking for repairs and management. The. Building is indeed a very old building on a great spot in galle. However, our experience have been terrible even if the restaurant staff did great Rooms are old and not properly cleaned (linen, bathroom) with a bathroom that would need a complete remodel, safebox was not working. Breakfast was included but not serve very funny
Peaceful surrounded by the sounds of the ocean”
This is my second stay at the Closenberg - and I wasn't disappointed. It was as wonderful as I remember - it's charming and well maintained. The rooms are simple and clean, not glamorous but full of character and history. The staff are attentive and are so eager to make sure a guest is well looked after. See you again in five years Closenberg. Barb : )
Friendly staff and good service”
I was on a business trip and was in and out of the hotel in less then 24 hours. The staff were warm and friendly. The breakfast is scrupulous and well prepared with different kinds of tropical fruits. The room is big and spacious, however I found dead cockroach in my room. The view from the balcony is superb and helps to wind down during a busy trip. The location of the hotel has hundred of years of history which makes it very special. However, there's insufficient lighting at night. The hotel is not big but seems cosy. Overall it was a pleasant stay.
Classic and Comfortable stay”
We stay 2night for Honeymoon. Crosenberg hotel is between Galle town and Unawatuna and quiet place, every rooms have nice ocean view balcony, we could have quiet time. Not only western food, they serve good Sri lankan food. If you like spicy food, you can see only western style for breakfast but I recommend that you wish Sri lankan style.
Beautiful old colonial hotel ”
This was the most expensive hotel we stayed in in Sri Lanka but it was far from the best. this was far too much for what you got. Nevertheless, the food was excellent, the service outstanding and the views across the bay from the balcony were great. Acess to Galle Fort was easy.
