            Excellent in every way”

All pros! Everything about Thambapanni Retreat Unawatuna is fantastic. Facilities: property and room beautifully appointed. Stylish, understated decor incorporating Sri Lankan textile and furniture. Large room with fab balcony with lush tropical garden view. Perfect pool for dip after a sea swim. Staff: professional, generous and helpful in all aspects of service from hospitable guest interaction to dietary preferences, transport. The manager Suhabandu went the extra mile in guest service, outstanding in his considerate and professional attitude. Nuwani, in reception, efficient and warm personality created a relaxed atmosphere. Location: a calm oasis 5 mins stroll to Unawatuna beach and super close to secluded Jungle beach. 10 mins from Galle by tuktuk. Breakfast: great. Sri Lankan (my favorite), and western - delicious ingredients, fresh juices, fruit, variety each day. Extras: have a massage, out of this world. Ask for Ruwan. I'd return to Thambapanni in a flash!

            Boutique Hotel Near The Sea”

Room comfort Pool Ayurvedic Spa and doctor

My wife, daughter and I stayed for 5 nights at this boutique hotel for 5 nights over Christmas 2015. It is located and the end of a quiet cul-de-sac towards the western end of the beach at Unawatuna. Birds, squirrels and monkeys abound in the heavily vegetated premises which is set into the base of a small mountain. The swimming pool is partially shaded shaded by trees and shrubs which is welcome protection from the Sri Lankan sun. A lovely sheltered beach about 5-10 minutes walk away where there are many beach restaurants and small waves which are ideal for family fun. We stayed in a superior room which was beautifully appointed and had a great bathroom. The beds were really comfortable for all three of us. The aspect of this hotel that sets it apart from similar establishments is the willingness of the staff to meet all requests not matter how trivial they may seem. From the maintenance and housekeeping staff all the way up to the general manager, everyone works really hard to to ensure that guest wishes are met. The staff maintain a good visible presence, are incredibly friendly, but never imposing The spa and in-house ayurvedic doctor were fantastic for yoga and body massages helping my wife and I to ensure that we had a relaxing stay. The restaurant served beautiful food and I thoroughly recommend the authentic and delicious Sri Lankan breakfast which I had nearly every day while I stayed. The only improvement that I would suggest would be to have a kids’ menu for lunch and dinner or maybe even consider half portion servings. I would recommend, without reservation, a stay at the Thambapanni Retreat if you want a relaxing family holiday very near the sea, but not on the beach. We are already looking forward to our next visit.

            Peaceful”

Friendly staff, beautiful pool, location to beach

I enjoyed my stay at Thambapanni, it was at the end of my trip in Sri Lanka and I found the change of pace at Unawatuna very welcoming. It sort of felt like a haven away from the madding crowd! If you are wanting to stay at Unawatuna, Thambapanni Retreat is a great option, its not budget accommodation nor is it luxury, its a little bit rustic, but hey this is Sri Lanka don't have high expectations. The breakfast was filling, and included in my room rate, the menu westernised but if you want to eat Sri Lankan and its not on the menu just ask them to prepare something for you. The staff are happy, smiling and overjoyed to assist you. The wifi works ok, but when the weather is stormy there is no signal, but no matter, you're on holiday it will be back on later. The proximity of Unawatuna Beach to Galle is close, 20 minutes and 300 to 350 LKR in a tuk tuk will get you there. Consider mixing it up with a bit of beach and town for a change of pace.

Spotlessless clean hotel in the jungle. How do they do it? With remarkable staff.”

We were so pleased to find this jungle oasis after touring for one month frough SL. Each room (we peaked) is uniquily different, but they each have mosquito netting, are spotlessly clean, and have a view and/or deck. The pool is a unique shape that allows 6 or 8 groups to have privacy while swimming. The food is very good and every night we checked the chalkboard to note the special of the evening. This is a very attentive and person al staff. We came to know and enjoy conversing with Siri, the head maitre d' who teaches hoteliering as well. The hotel's motto seems to be "if you are happy, then we are happy." They go out of their way to make your time at Thambapanni unique but they do it in a nonaggressive and even casual way. Wonderful skills! We took advantage of every aspect of Thambapanni. The ayuvedic treatments are individualized. While my wife went for massages with S, who has the best hands in SL I am told. I went for a more traditional workup with the doctor himself who worked on previous issues. The books say Unawatuna is too crowded and is touristy, but that is if one stays on the closest beaches to the highway. Venture into the jungle section of Unawatuna and you will see why people come back again and again just as we will.

We Transferred to their Other hotel - Thapbropan”

            Better Location and Nicer Accommodation

we arrived at thambapanni retreat hotel and expected a 40sqm room with a ocean view. we did not get this. instead they tried to put us in a dark, small room with no personality. we obviously complained. we showed them the room we booked and they told us that the wrong photo was put on agoda. however, photo or not, the description given still did not match the room we booked. we were told that there are no ocean view rooms at this establishment. however, they were very helpful and apologetic and called their other hotel thapbropan (which is on the water and the main drag of unawatuna. they organised a tuk tuk for us to go and have a look before we committed. and advised that we would have a part ocean view only. well i am so glad they offered us this other room at their sister hotel as it was sensational. the ocean view was great, albeit not a full ocean view. the room a lot bigger and brighter and we had our balcony as promised when we purchased. we ended up staying three nights. the restaurant downstairs was also great - we spent every night there and had dinner. it was just so convenient. thapbropan is almost in the middle of the main strip - hence easy walking distance to both ends of the bay. note: the tide comes right up to the facilities, so no sun bathing in front of this hotel. you would have to walk to a nearby hotel or cafe that will offer beach lounges and umbrellas - but usually free if you purchase something to eat there. there is still quite visual reminders of the tsunami here, but all in all a stunning place. i would highly recommend thapbropan - but cannot advise in regard to thambapanni.

Location, Nature and tranquility in the perfect location.

We loved our stay and the staff at Thambapanni Retreat. I recommend taking a Superior room at the minimum due to some minor maintenance issues and to not have people smoking outside of your room. Superior and Tower suites are up in the treetops with the birds and monkeys. .. beautiful to hear the birds jn the morning. The spa and pool were exceptional. Beautifully decorated boutique hotel. All the best restaurants in Unawatuna are a pleasant beach walk away. We didn't have a chance to sample the hotel restaurant but will be back! Truly a positive experience!

An oasis of tranquility - A real gem!”

We were a family of 6 that had the utmost pleasure of staying at Thambapanni Retreat from the 3rd - 7th of December 2016. The colonially styled resort surrounded by lush and thriving greenery offers a peaceful and calm vibe. We had the delight of bird watching and spotted monkeys & squirrel from our balconies; we even encountered a monitor lizard sunning itself on our roof sunlight. Another thing worth mentioning is the resort staff - They were ultra accommodating right from the time we checked in. They paid special attention to our every need and made sure that our stay was a pleasant and good one. Kudos to Nuwani - She is a total sweetheart and went beyond her role to please us! Thank you Nuwani! Just a min away from Unawatuna beach, the resort is in perfect proximity to the sea, shacks, restaurants, shopping, money exchange etc. We had a memorable trip, will definitely come back!

5 minutes from the beach in a beatiful garden”

            hotel cleanliness, location, staff

I had a fantastic stay at Thambapanni Retreat. The staff was very professional and knowledgeable and helped me with all my questions and requests. The hotel rates itself 5 stars, please be aware this will not be like a 5-star hotel in the west but you will be sure to enjoy the accommodations. I liked that the hotel was not on the beach but only a 5 minute walk away. It was quiet and once inside the fence it was as if you were walking through the garden of eden with a small pool, beautiful trees, flowers and birds chirping. They have an Ayurvedic doctor on hand who offers traditional treatments for a reasonable price and he was great! He also offers a daily yoga class from 8-9AM (except Saturdays) for around $6 in a beautiful open-aired roof studio on the second floor of the hotel. I needed a driver to take me to 3 additional cities and I booked him through Thambapanni for a very reasonable price. My driver, Suresh, was professional and knowledgeable of the areas we went to. I asked for a more local experience and he would stop sometimes during our drive and pick up fruit from stands along the road so I could try fruits that I didn't have back home. Overall a great experience and I would recommend this hotel with pleasure. Even though the price was a bit higher than some other hotels in the area, it was worth every penny! Thank you Thambapanni for a wonderful time!

            Fantastic hideaway”

Large room, nice decor, quiet location

We booked Thambapanni on Agoda the night before our stay, and got a flash deal 62% off the rack rate. It is set back from the beach in a quiet street, only a short walk by the shops and restaurants to the gorgeous Unawatuna beach. We've stayed on the beach before and it can be a nightmare with noisy bars and banging music coming at you from all sides. So this was really a welcome retreat, only a few minutes from the action. We stayed in a deluxe room with a balcony overlooking the small pool. The room was huge, 13m long, with a lovely 4 poster bed, antique furniture, all in dark wood and great air conditioning. The bathroom was a bit odd, a rustic bath and a weak shower, but ok. There was a constant stream of ants in the corner of the bathroom wall, but they were busy going about their business and didn't disturb us at all. There are birds nesting in a lot of the light shades on the balcony and around the outside of the hotel. It is a very natural setting and to be expected. They also seem to be prone to short power cuts, so keep a torch handy..... The staff was so welcoming and friendly, and the room was cleaned and made up every day. We loved this place and wished we could have stayed longer. Unawatuna itself is a great place with plenty of bars and restaurants, and a fantastic beach. Overall Thambapanni is in a lovely serene setting, tastefully decorated in a colonial style and well maintained. The staff is extremely attentive without being in your face, and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Lovely hotel with very good service.”

            Service, location, food.

Thambapanni Retreat is very lovely hotel with extraordinary service and good location (5 min from the beach). I guess that it is one of the best in Unawatuna. Standard room is simple but very clean, with fun, air-conditioner and mosquito net. There are also beautiful garden and pool. Staff is very friendly. There are also possibility to deal with yoga and take a massage. It was great!

Another marvelous stay at Thambapanni Retreat! ”

Boutique styling, relaxing-secluded setting, friendly-attentive staff.

We last stayed at the Thambapanni Retreat in 2010 and were bowled over by not only the hotel but by the wonderful staff who consistently went out of their way to make sure our stay was exceptional. I'm glad to say that this visit was just as good. Set away from the beach itself, the retreat has a more relaxed and private atmosphere than Unawatuna's seafront spots. Check in was extremely quick and straight forward. We booked a deluxe room but I got the impression we were bumped up as our room was really something special: private balcony (from which we could see monkeys climbing the trees), gorgeous antique furniture, open-air shower! Once again the staff were first-class; always friendly and helpful, some of the team even remembered our names us from 3 years ago! We didn't eat dinner at the restaurant on this occasion choosing to explore the nearby restaurants instead but the breakfasts were very good-just the thing to set us up for a day of swimming in the sea and visiting Galle Fort. Tuc-Tucs are easy to come by though it's worth pointing out that the majority aren't metered like in Colombo so agree a price before settling on a driver. I strongly recommend a stay at this hotel and look forward to the next chance I get to return.

            Our favourite holiday ”

This was our third time at Thambapanni Retreat and it is our all-time favourite place to vacation. The rooms are huge, clean and beautifully designed, a little worn in some spots but nothing major. The pool is clean and has daily monkey visits overhead which is a fun sight. The staff might be the best part though. They are the warmest, most welcoming and hospitable people we have experienced in all our travels. We never want to leave when we visit and have recommended Thambapanni Retreat to all our families and friends. We will most definitely be back again for a 4th visit soon! Thank you, Thambapanni Retreat for making our holiday so special!

The Best in a Sad Place”

Quiet, comfortable, beautiful, good food, good value

Unawatuna is a sadly overdeveloped mediocre beach resort, with wall-to-wall shops, restaurants and hotels almost completely blocking off the sand and even the breeze. Thambapanni is set back from the noisy tuk-tuk crammed road, in jungle complete with monkeys. Its small pool is welcome in the hot afternoon, management is very smart, and the food is outstanding. While you are very likely to ask yourself what you're doing in Unawatuna, you'll have the comfort of knowing you're in the best accommodation option.

            Paradise at an affordable price”

The location of the hotel is fantastic. On the edge of the jungle and 10 minutes walk from the beach. The decoration, design of the hotel as unique. An excellent standard of care from all staff.

We decided at the last minute to have a short break. We had heard such positive comments about Sri Lanka so we decide to go for 5 days. I looked for the top rayed hotels and found the Thambapanni Retreat. They had a special deal. It was fantastic value for money. The room was of a very high standard at a high specification. We could watch the monkeys in the trees from the balcony of our room. The breakfast was great, we tried both traditional and Sri Lankan. The evening meals in the hotel were also of a hgh standard. The hotel had an excellent chef. The staff from the manager down, were great. The manager organised a day trip for us into the Shinaraja Ran forest, and we had a short detour to a Tea plantation. The fabulous beach was a short walk from our hotel. The restaurants on the beach were also good. Although our week was out of season (early season) the weather was very good. Some thundery rain, but it's on the edge of a rainforest, so it's expected. It's was a fantastic break and we will definitely return for a longer break in June. A wonderful hotel in a beautiful country.

Tucked away from the Mania of Unawatuna's market street”

We had a short but comfortable stay at the Thambapanni Retreat, being accommodated in one of their cave suites. The room was spacious and clean with a suitably sized bathroom as well. The pool on the property is great and is shaded by palms and kept exceptionally clean. The staff were accommodating and we didn't have to ask for anything as all the necessary amenities were provided in room. We did not eat on the property and only had a cup of coffee at the cafe and thus cannot comment on the quality of the dining. The property is however attractive and it is located within walking distance to arguably two of the best home style Sri Lankan kitchens in Unawatuna, Wasantha's Sri Lanka Cuisine and Sea Waves Restaurant and Cooking Class.

            Peaceful retreat with friendly staff”

We enjoyed our stay at Thambapanni Retreat. It was located within 10 minutes walk to the beach, which had a range of restaurants to choose from. The staff were wonderful with our 20-month-old daughter, who enjoyed lots of cuddles and loved playing with them. The room was clean, comfortable and a good size (we were able to easily fit our travel cot in). Our room had a skylight, which didn't bother us but may not suit some. The bathrooms were equipped with modern fittings and had good water pressure/hot water supply. Rooms were cleaned daily. The breakfast had a decent variety of food, with eggs and bacon available on request, we enjoyed the fish and chicken curries in particular. The pool was shaded by trees providing protection from the sun and had 4-5 sun lounges. The hotel offered daily yoga classes for an additional 1000SR. The wifi was so-so and would drop out completely during a storm, but we found this all throughout Sri Lanka. A great place for a relaxing break.

            A lovely spot”

Thambapanni Retreat is an island of peace hidden away off the bustling road into Unawatune Beach with its restaurants and shops. The rooms are generous, many looking out into the canopy of trees which give the sense that the Retreat is set entirely in rainforest. I had a nasty fall in the shower while staying at the Retreat, and the staff sent me to hospital immediately for an X-ray to check I had not broken any bones, and they looked after me with great care for the whole of the rest of my stay. Thank you for your concern!

            friendly staff, facilities, food

originally we wanted to say for 2 nights but we extended for 5 nights. the hotel treated us with room upgrade. the staff was very hospitable, they helped us with everything we asked without any word in a few minutes. no matter if we needed extra towel or adapter. look for waiter "indu" if you want to have the best dinner in unawatuna. he is extremely friendly and his recommendations are actually very delicious. the location is in the middle of unawatuna so its very easy to walk to anywhere. we can totally recommend this hotel. the only thing, if you are particular about the smell, dont go to the suites, as they have stone wall which have special smell. (not bad smell at all, just a bit damp)

Thambapanni Retreat is perfectly locatec; not too close to the beach promenade and the hustle and bustle, but close enough to get there by foot. The design concept is good and the rooms are lovingly appointed. I had a grand deluxe room which was very quiet and spacious and had a lovely large balcony. The Spa services are good and it was peaceful to sit in the restaurant, while it rained outside. Staff were all very friendly and helpful!
