Excellent value and great customer service”
We usually like providing pros and cons of every place we stayed at but we have to say that we were quite impressed with the service and the value we received at Thao Minh New Star Hotel . We stayed here for 4 days and We were very happy with the facilities of this hotel. The beds are very comfortable, the flat screen tv has English channels, the towels are very soft...After traveling through Vietnam for about 2 months I can honestly say that the staff goes the extra mile to pleased you in every single area you may need help. All the furniture in the bedroom is completely new. Another great plus was having an electric kettle in the bedroom, we got to use it at least twice a day to make tea and coffee. We have been traveling for 6 months non stop and we have can say that the owner/manager has done a really good job getting everything needed to keep this hotel above standard. One of the sweetest things we got from management at our departure was a Christmas present...what a nice touch! Overall, We have had one of the best experience staying at this hotel. We would encourage anyone that looks for good quality of beds,great customer service and excellent location.

A decent hotel at a reasonable price”
Our stay at Thao Minh New Star was just what we wanted. A decent hotel at a reasonable price. The staff are polite and friendly and very helpful. The room was modern and well maintained, with wi-fi and cable TV (including some English channels). There was always hot water and the rooms were made up daily, usually accompanied by a nice plate of complimentary fruit. The locations if great. Lovely view of the harbour from our room and as it's right on the front strip in Cat Ba town, easy walking access to restaurants, transports, tour booking etc... The restaurant wasn't very good, but there are so many other places nearby to choose from that it really wasn't a problem. I'd happily stay here again. This time I was travelling with a friend, but I would happily choose this hotel when coming to Cat Ba with my family and children.

Central bay front location”
Thao Minh is located on the bay front in the town centre. We had the top floor room with lovely big balcony looking over the entire bay. The room was a nice size but could have benifited from a little more scrubbing and dusting. The hotel was doing some renovating so the contruction dirt likely did not help. The staff and owner were nice but the real stand out was the girl on the front desk, Lananh. It was off season on Cat Ba so it was quiet and layed back, we really enjoyed our stay on the island.

Comfortable stay with Sea View 😃”
The hotel is located opposite to the cat co sea line with a beautiful view both at sunset and night..The food served at the restaurant is good but it is not complimentary. Staff are friendly but they do not speak English, it’s advisable to use translate apps for communication if required. There are number of travel agencies , bike rentals and restaurants in and around the hotel and it’s a definite plus. Also the cat co beaches are 1.5kms away from this place. Very good”
We had the most amazing view from our 7th floor window/balcony (if you can count a 2'x2' area as a balcony!). The harbour with all its ships was awe-inspiring! The hotel is on the main drag and close to all the many restaurants and places that can arrange outings to the fabulous islands. The Thao Minh also has a restaurant and can arrange excursions.

Our experience in this hotel was better that we expected for the price. The staff was very kind anf helful all the time. The rooms are almost new and very clean and they clean the room daily providing new towells. They offer buffet breakfast include on the price. In addition, we have eTen severals times on the restaurant and we discovered fare prices with a good quality. It is a very confortBle and nice hotel there is no doubt. Therefore, I would recommended.

We stayed at Thao Minh 5 nights. The room was comfortable and our room was made up every day. Towels and toiletries were provided. It is a great location on the harbour and was very easy to get off the bus and you were basically there. There were some big ants and a cockroach but the hotel staff bought in someone to spray them. Breakfast is very functional, there is baguette, one fried egg, fried rice or noodles and coffee. Breakfast is served until 8.30 so we only made it once.

2 week stay”
I stayed here for two weeks. If you get the large room, the stay is comfortable, but the if you get the small room, you will feel cramped. Make sure the room they give you match the photos and description of the booking. There is a room on the 10th floor with a balcony and a view of the bay. Get that room if you can. In the day time, you can walk to the flamingo or the hotel pearl of the orient for a nice coffee with a scenic view.

Worst hotel during 4 weeks in vietnam”
When we booked this hotel, we knew that Cat Ba island doesn't offer very good standards, so we knew that we couldn't expect much. But we haven't expected to be treated so disrespectfully and we left although we had already paid for a longer stay. When we arrived, I gave the receptionist our Agoda voucher with all the booking details and he started asking us how long we stay?! After that he just downgraded us to a lower category room and gave us the key without saying anything. When we got in the room, I noticed this and went down to change it. The receptionist had downgraded us from our room with a nice big balcony overviewing the bay (for which we had already paid) to a smaller one with a ridiculous small balcony because we are two guys and the better room has only one double bed. But finally we got the key to the "vip" room. The bathroom was the filthiest we have had during for weeks in Vietnam (and we have also been in homestays in the countryside): the floor was completely floated by cleaning and it was stained everywhere. The shower and its walls were mouldy and had the most disgusting tap I've ever seen. But the view was good and the room was decent, so we just cleaned the bathroom on ourself. Then we went down for eating something at the hotel restaurant: the food was ok but we had to search for the waitress again and again for ordering one more drink or just to get the bill, who was fooling around sitting on the street. The best was when we have been woken up at about 7am on the next morning. The walls are as thin as paper and you can imagine how it feels, when they start drilling and hammering in the room upon yours. Completely regardless of our sleep, they started at around 7am and stopped two hours later. The day after we woke up at about the same time due to the chambermaids shouting behind our door. We kindly asked them to be quite and the said they were sorry, but as we closed the door they started shouting again. This was also the day when we aske

I stayed at this hotel on the night of the Vietnam vs Malaysia soccer game and the whole town was a big party, my only complaint was the spotty WiFi

We supposed to stay 2 days and we finally stayed 6days. Very good location, we had air conditioning problems but they solve it very quickly. The staff is very nice, rooms clean and good enough for the price We recommend

Good room, bad breakfast”
We payed for a deluxe twin room with sea view which was great, as other rooms had no windows. The room was big with two double beds, it was comfortable and clean and was it pretty good condition, however some of the lights didn't work but not a big issue. The staff were friendly, but the worst thing about it was the 'buffet' breakfast- it only runs from 6.30-8.30, which is not great of your on holiday to relax, and it is not a buffet, but a no choice option of one fried egg and a piece of bread wth no butter or jam ect. The coffee is sat there for hours and if they run out they don't make a fresh pot but fill it up with water. They have rice and noodles keeping warm over hot water but if you don't get there at 6.30 when they are made fresh they looks and smell awful! For the price of $17 a night this was a very poor breakfast. I was even refused butter when I asked for it in replacement for the fried egg! If they sort here breakfast out it would be much better place to stay.

You get what you pay for”
The rooms are totally okay for the price, but don't expect luxury. The rooms were clean enough but especially the bathroom was a bit dirty. The doors and windows don't protect you from outside- noises. During our stay there was a storm during the night. Electricity broke down and the emergency-aggregat, which was on our floor startet working very loudly. We had to put earplugs in to sleep at all. But still, the view is stunning und it's still good Value for the money!

Disappointment ”
From other reviews, I thought this room would be great, but was let down time after time. Every time I approached the front desk, the women had heir faces buried in their phones and spoke very quietly to me so I could barely understand. Someone came knocking on our room and tried opening our door at some point one night. We had windows to the hallway that wouldn't shut all the way so you could hear every noise outside the room and vice versa. Room had many needed repairs. No services offered during our stay for some reason. Mattress was OK - not rock hard but still pretty stiff. Oh and blanket was extremely thin, try requesting an extra or sleeping with a towel.

Rooms were ok. Bathroom wasn't the cleanest I've ever seen but ok! Same as breakfast. The beds are really hard, they didnt invest in mattresses. Great location and friendly staff.
