More about Tharkayta Township

When it comes to infrastructure and historic attractions, Yangon still feels like the Burmese capital. Of all the cities in Myanmar, Yangon has the most prolific architecture and cultural attractions.

Schwedagon Pagoda is in the heart of the city in a bend of the Yangon River. Other sites in the area include Yangon Aquarium, Zoological Gardens and Kandawgyi Lake. This area hosts most of the hotels in Yangon. Further north is Inya Lake, with a pair of four- and five-star resorts that represent some of the best accommodation in Myanmar. On the shores of the lake are attractive gardens, a university and villas of Burmese dignitaries.

Much of the accommodation in Yangon is up-market, with relatively few budget or mid-range options in the city center. The more luxurious hotels still present excellent value for money by international standards. Despite its historic appeal, Yangon doesn’t receive that many international tourists, so the facilities that exist are more than adequate. Most visitors to this city are on official business, working in conjunction with government offices or NGOs, arriving via Yangon Airport.

Despite the emphasis on business- and government- related travel, Yangon’s dining and shopping scene continues to expand. There are more international restaurants and modern shopping centers than before, many in or near major hotels in Yangon. Chinese noodle shops and authentic Burmese restaurants are also popular.
