Situated in the heart of Bloomsbury in London's West End, The Academy comprises a collection of five Georgian townhouses combined into one charming luxury hotel. Following a multi-million-pound interior refurbishment by YTL Hotels, The Academy is now a proud member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection.
The comprehensive refurbishment was overseen by renowned New York-based designer Alexandra Champalimaud, who has created an engaging blend of modern and vintage with a nod to the lives and loves of the Bloomsbury Set who lived and worked in the area in the early 20th Century.
This rejuvenated 50 bedroom/suite boutique hotel in Bloomsbury juxtaposes timeless glamour and traditional features with a modern, comfortable city style to create a contemporary take on townhouse living.
Guests at The Academy can start the day with a sumptuous breakfast served in the stylish yet relaxed surrounds of The Refectory. The cosy Alchemy Bar is housed on the ground floor and is the perfect Bloomsbury retreat for bespoke cocktails, speciality gins or a refreshing glass of wine or Champagne. Guests can sample a quintessential Afternoon Tea in the secluded courtyard, while savouring drinks from the extensive menu. The Library at The Academy is a place to read, reflect, and to contemplate whilst The Academy Book Club is a nod to the literary history of the area, enabling guests to immerse themselves in the famous works of the Bloomsbury Set in intimate monthly gatherings for coffee, cake, and conversation.

Beautiful cosy hotel, great location”
The Academy is a beautiful Georgian hotel with impeccable cleanliness and very welcoming and helpful staff. The location is perfect, within walking distance to tube stations (Tottenham Court Rd and Goodge Street), the British Museum, and the Oxford Street shopping area. I arrived at about 11am, which was early for check-in, but instead of leaving my luggage and coming back later, the room was ready in 10min. The staff helped me get my bags up to the room, as there is no lift (it is clearly communicated at the hotel's website). I had a suite that was very comfortable, with a comfy bed and a lovely soaking bathtub. Bottles of water and fruits were provided in the room, which was a nice touch. The only drawback was the Internet access, which was unreliable with an inefficient system of limited usage. In addition, as other reviewers have mentioned, certain apps (for instance Whatsapp) cannot be used. Ask for a rear room as Gower St. can be quite noisy. Overall, a great place to stay in London!
Nice hotel with great location”
The Academy is just off Oxford Street that it's within a walking distance to the shopping streets and yet far away enough from the hustle and bustle of London City. The room is nice and cozy with extremely good and fast service. There were extremely limited choices for room services, but there are a few small cafes around the corner that is worth checking out. The area is safe and nice to walk around. Just around the corner to the British Museum and 5mins walk to either Goodge Street/ Tottenham Court Road Station.
Wonderful, elegant service in a great location”
I chose this place because it was within my budget and one of the few places with A/C. That is important to me because I wasn't sure what the weather would be like in London, and I heard that it can get humid in London, and I HATE to be hot. I'm glad I did because I was on the top floor of this place, and there were a few warm days during my stay. Anyway, as expected the rooms are quite small; however, I mainly was in the room to sleep. The place is very clean and comfortable. The internet is rather slow, but it's great for the basic stuff (checking email, twitter/facebook, but don't expect to play any games or skype with anyone). Also, if you're on the top floor, be prepared to walk up some serious stairs! This was good, however, as I needed to burn off some extra calories. All in all, worth the expense overall, as London hotels are EXPENSIVE!!! Oh, I wasn't impressed with the water pressure from my shower, but I didn't complain about it. My friends in their rooms said that it was fine; so maybe it was just me.
Lovely Hotel and a great central location”
one of the nicest hotels we have stayed in when visiting london. our room was very clean and well laid out with everything we could have wanted for a comfortable stay. the staff were very helpful and friendly. the hotel is located very close to two tube stations both within a short walking distance. great for getting around london to enjoy sightseeing and all major attractions. we found lot's of restaurant's within walking distance also. very convenient. we would definitely stay there again.
nice little luxury boutique hotel”
we stayed here for two nights on new year's eve. the hotel consists of 3 typical london townhouses joined together. everything is small and cosy and very english. room was nice but small. good bed. downside is no swimming pool or any other typical big hotel facilities. also no parking since london is anti vehicle so you have to walk 15 mins to a paid parking lot. tottenham court is 10 mins walk, oxford st 15 mins and soho barely 20 mins. right next to the british museum which is nice.
Excellent location comfy beds ”
Very impressed with this small intimate hotel in Bloomsbury. Super comfortable beds with fantastic pillows. Small room but had everything that was needed. Staff carried our luggage to the room-exceptional service. Highly recommended
Superbly location, excellent staff, set in a 240 odd year old Georgian building”
Benefiting from easy access (within 10 minutes) to five London Underground stations, the location is the key attraction to The Academy. I found the staff to be exceptionally good and the breakfasts also. On the less positive side, the internet service was pretty ropey and the decor a little tatty with a fridge that was barely cool, torn grubby net curtains and a high tile ridge to the shower basin, on which I cut my toe. I believe the hotel has been sold, so hopefully the new owners will be able to give it the upgrade it deserves and still hang on to the excellent staff, who were courteous and attentive to detail. I would stay there again, and look forward to seeing the refreshed decor next time!
Fantastic surprise in the heart of London”
I needed a last minute hotel and with London fully booked I finally managed to pick a room up at this supposedly budget hotel. My expectations were fairly low but from when I arrived to when I left the experience was very good. Friendly staff, great bedrooms (high ceilings) and beautifully decorated. The only criticism was my room was facing the main road so it was a little noisy in the morning. Other than that I would highly recommend the Acadamy.
Classy Bed & Breakfast at great location”
I got a big room with huge bathroom. Although the room is close to the pathway and therefore a bit noisy, overall it was a very pleasant stay at the Academy!
in the heart of London”
the hotel is a bit old and small. the high price isn't for the hotel premises or its servives, but rather for its location. it is about 5 minutes walk to get to Oxford Street, tottenham court road station. the room was small as well as the bathroom. however, the room is to be loved because it is quite, clean and with good furniture. the tv in the room was not working. so I contacted the reception about the tv & they responded well. they couldn't fix the tv for 3 days. the four day they apologised and I was upgraded to a suite. the suite was really nice and spacious compared the room. overall, my experience with the academy hotel was great.
Small Room But What a Lovely Stay”
i enjoyed my stay at the academy hotel. the hotel staff is very friendly and accommodating. the rooms are small but i never felt cramped. the rooms are very clean, well appointed and comfortable.
Classic hotel with strategic location”
We stayed in the Academy for 6 nights. We love the classic interior of the room. The staffs are very friendly too.
Place to return to”
On arrival, we upgraded our claustrophobic regular room to a luxury suite and have been happy ever since. It was large and light with an excellent bathroom. Staff were friendly and helpful. It has been our best accommodation in London so far. We stayed 11 nights. Unfortunately there were some noisy neighbouring guests above. There is poor sound insulation. Also, one has to renew the WI-Fi access every day. And our room was cleaned after 3PM which ruled out our using it during the day for rest or research.
A little outdated”
As with many London hotels, this hotel is a little outdated. The WiFi is slow and capped to a single device using the old fashioned browser log on technique so would not work with my radio. There is also a very low daily data limit, useless for streaming. We paid for breakfast when we booked but were told that it only covered a continental and a full English was an extra £15 per head! We witnesses several guests surprise at that unusual hidden cost. The tea that was served at breakfast was loose leaf, which is fine, but only if they put enough tea in for the size of the pot! Even after brewing for 10 minutes the tea was terribly weak, classic style over substance! Other than that, the hotel was fine, the staff were very polite, the rooms were comfortable and clean. It's a typical 4 star hotel, they just need to fix the internet and not skimp on breakfast! We will go again because the location is so convenient, it'll be interesting to see if they improve.
Friendly and comfortable place to stay”
Easy access to places for sightseeing and for business. Well-treated by all the staff-members whom I met during this stay. Ideal place to enjoy smaller type of hotels in London.
Decent town hotel with good location”
The hotel is well located, within easy walking distance of the British Museum, the shops of Oxford Street and the nightlife of Soho. It's also close to the tube (Goodge Street). As with all London hotels in this price category, four stars doesn't really equate to luxury. Our room was clean and comfortable enough, although the cleaning staff seemed to abandon their job half way through, leaving the bed unmade and returning in the evening with clean towels. Internet reception was very weak and at times unusable, but at least it wasn't charged separately.
Great location, good service, comfortable room”
a good and efficient welcome, my arrival was early but, unlike larger hotels, an effort was made to find a room immediately. the room was small, but larger than comparable london hotels i've stayed in and well designed to take advantage of the limited storage space. excellent shower. larger downstairs suites are expensive, but more suitable for couples.
Nice and cosy hotel with great location.”
We enjoyed the hotel, and it was what we expected. The room and the bathroom were nice (we had a suite for for three people). The interior of all the common areas were nice and relaxing. The staff were smily and serviceminded. We only experienced one odd situation. We asked for some water from roomservice and they confirmed that they would come to our room, but they never came- even after to reminders to the reception. The breakfast was impecable but slightly overpriced, and they had no children discount. When we left the hotel ordered a private taxi for us, instead of a London cab (why?). The taxi had no taxtameter and the fare was overprised by app. £10 (Hotel- Paddington).
Clean and attractive hotel, friendly staff”
Very warm and friendly atmosphere, clean room and bathroom and comfortable bed. A bag holding area for after check out, was perfect location to wonder around central London.
a nice corner hotel pretty good place”
it's nice and really feels like a home like hotel, it has pretty small rooms so if that's an issue I guess you have a problem but who comes to London to be in the room ? it has some nice breakfast and I really felt like a British gentleman when I got there. it's very good place to go ! I highly advice it.
