Best Western hotels never disappoint”
Never knew there was a BW in downtown Union Square as we always booked a hotel just around the corner. Little did I know, they were one of the few hotels that offered King beds. Huge plus considering hotel rooms are quite small in SF. However the rooms at this BW were very roomy even with the King bed. Only drawback was the location of the bathroom sink and medicine cabinet above. I understand the objective is to maximize space by making it a corner sink, but the mirror/medicine cabinet was awkward especially when trying to brush my teeth or wash my face. I just needed to remind myself not to move my head up or else I would bump the back of my head everytime. Other than that, everything else in this hotel is great; from the staff to the rooms.
A comfy stay right n the heart of SF”
The Cartwright is located on Sutter Street just a short hop from Union Square in the heart of SF. Parking is at a real premium here and the hotel has an agreement with a garage one block away which charged us about 30USD per day, good value given the other prices advertised. The staff were extremely friendly at check in and throughout our stay and were a real feature of the hotel. The hotel itself is not 'new'. It is housed in an older block which means the rooms are a little quirkier than a standard new build hotel. Ours was on the top floor and looked onto the back of other apartment blocks, so not a gat view but it was very quiet at night. The room had high ceilings and a fan above the bed which adequately ventilated things. The bathroom was a little small but very clean with a decent shower. Whilst some of the fixtures and fittings were not new, things were perfectly clean. Access to the main shopping areas is superb, just 5 mins walk. The same for public transport (BART, buses, trams). Fisherman's Wharf and Nob Hill are all within walking distance albeit up some steep streets! The are several options for breakfast nearby (the hotel itself serves no breakfast). All in all, a clean, well located and friendly hotel in a busy part of Downtown SF that felt safe at all times.
Very good”
Located in Sutter Street, 2 blocks away from Union Square. Close to Shopping, Restaurants and many stores. San Francisco famous Tram ride is in Powell street, next to the hotel. Hotel is very traditional theme , Rooms are small , however they are clean , neat and tidy. Bathroom is congested and it will be a challenge for some one slightly oversize, to use it . I am at 5’11” , couldn’t sit in the commode comfortably as knees were hitting the sink cup board. No in- room fridge, how ever tea/coffee facility is available. Surrounding can be noisy so as the room, due to traffic and pedestrians Check in & Check out process is quick & efficient. Staff are friendly & helpful.
Clean, Cozy, Perfect Location”
Old charm hotel, quaint. I loved how clean my room was - linens crisp, towels fluffy and new. I had a boutique queen. It was small but forgivable. The walk-in closet was a bonus for spreading luggage open. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was pristine. Housekeepers are attentive. Unlike some 5-star hotels, they changed my linen that I had soiled slightly with food . No breakfast or room service but there is a Lorie's Diner open 24 hours and Walgreens a few steps away and a 7-11 across the hotel. Not a problem. Location is perfect. Union Square and many branded retail shops are within a few blocks. Easy access to the Tram, BART, and buses. Great value. I recommend this hotel for single and buddy travelers.
Exceptional”
The Hotel is awesome. Very unique. The rooms are small but very well set up and very clean! Great location for sightseeing. Trolly is right outside the hotel. I will stay here when I return to San Francisco
Beautiful, aesthetic, and safe!”
We came here for a weekend and had a very comfortable stay! The staff is absolutely amazing. Even though we ended up arriving late at night due to some hiccups in our travel plans, they were very warm and welcoming at that late hour. The room was immaculately clean and tidy. Although the room wasn’t very large, it had a big closet area with a nice mirror to get ready with. Everything looks newly renovated and modern, with the classic antique flair. The lobby area is simply beautiful. The location is also great as it’s close to Union Square. Overall a great stay! We’d be back again for the price we got these rooms at :)
Super Place to stay in SF”
I have become a huge fan of the Best Western properties that have a boutique flare. This hotel had a wonderful and attentive staff, good coffee, extremely comfortable bed, and the location was super, in the heart of Union Square. I recommend it highly if you want to stay in the city without breaking the bank.
Great location”
The hotel is a little old so you are able to hear your neighbours but the bed and pillows are very comfortable. They provide you with all the basic amenities so you don't need to buy/bring anything and they have coffee and tea in the morning. It is in a great location as it is very close to Union Square and Chinatown and there are alot of eateries around the hotel.
Small but Cosy ”
Walkable from Union Square and the shopping area. With convenient store located around the hotel. Enjoyed the stay very much, cosy and warm room, nice ambience with friendly staff that recommended good places for breakfast:)
Thank You for staying with us at The Cartwright Hotel Union Square. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay at our hotel. We agree that although our rooms are not the hugest, we have an undeniable great location, cosy and warm rooms, nice ambience and friendly staff that recommend great restaurants.
Great location for your San Fran stop over”
Loved the proximity to cable car, Chinatown and Union Square. Lots of breakfast and food options around hotel. Hotel staff pleasant and willing to help. Hotel facilities comfortable. Really clean environment.
Great location, friendly staff!!”
the hotel was located two blocks from union square. you could easily catch street cars, bart or the buses. the hotel was clean, the staff was very friendly and helpful, and i had a very enjoyable stay.
Nice cozy hotel close to Union Square”
Perfect location, safe, close to Union Square and downtown. A bit noisy during the night (noise from the street). The control acces system not working properly, the elevator was out of service in our last day (we're staying at the 8th floor), however the staff helped us to carry our luggages downstairs. No breakfast available.
Great Location - rooms a little small”
staff were generally helpful and courteous - we were always greeted with a smile and hello. the hotel location is close to everything in the lively union square area. also close to cable car stops and buses to get to other parts of san fran. breakfast is not offered, however there are many cafes and diners within close walking distance. overall, a great stay when travelling on a budget.
central”
it's a small rather cheap hotel by union square. dont expect much. The room was small and clean. it delivered my expectations. Reception is helpfull and friendly. There is no safe at the rooms. and anyone can come up to The floors.
Great Hotel 'all round'”
This hotel in in a great location - right in the heart of the union square area. The staff were fantastic and always served us with a smile. The hotel is decorated nicely and serve complimentery tea/coffee each morning. There is no breakfast option, but that is not an issue and there are many eating places around within a 100m walk of the hotel. Rooms are a bit small but quite 'cosy' all the same. Would definately stay there again.
Excellent hotel for the value ”
Excellent friendly service from a gracious staff. A well maintained older hotel. Very comfortable accommodations. Right in Union Square. I wish I had found it sooner.
Classic hotel feel with friendly staff”
I enjoyed my stay at Cartwright, the staff was ever helpful and friendly. The place really grew on me and I left wishing I could stay another day.
Excellent”
Very good location! Very near union square (walking distance only). There's also near 7-11 and walgreens! Will definitely book this hotel again when I go back to SFO.
Great location in Union Square”
Amazingly located at the heart of Union Square. Public transportation was easily accessible. Everything else was close, shops, cafes etc. Room was a bit too small though...
Value for money”
