Much improved compared to my last stay”

Friendly staff, great central location especially for nightlife, very clean

I stayed at the Dictionary hostel a couple of years ago - wow what an improvement compared to then. The hostel was really clean, the reception is way bigger, the food at the bar was great and the room was really nice and quiet even though it looked onto the main street in Shoreditch. The staff are so friendly and did everything they could to help me during my stay - thanks guys! They have this cool app that I downloaded and I found loads of stuff to do in the local area. So much great street art in this neighbourhood! The breakfast was quite basic but it had everything you needed - I chose to go to the bar where they do a full English with a 20% discount for guests. The room was clean and tidy and I had it to myself. It looked like they have just had new windows installed or something. I remember it was a bit noisy last time but this time it was really quiet. Enjoyed my stay - will come back.

I have stayed here many times and the reception is always friendly and welcoming on my arrival Most of the staff and volunteers are all very engaging and this helps to make your stay as comfortable as possible, the dormitory style accommodation can be challenging as people do arrive at any given time of the day so be prepared, but overall the ambience of this hostel makes it my no1 to stay in London Well done guys!! Very good”

Being situated in an excellent location comes with a drawback. The hostel is facing one of the noisiest roads in London with at least two sirens per hour during night time and night time revellers until the early hours. The hostel is clean enough but the (berlin/shoreditch/rough-around-the-edges) style does that it does not look very clean. You can hear everything that goes on in the toilet from the rooms. Breakfast served late. Staff ranges from borderline fair to very nice and accommodating. Having lived locally for many years the Hostel was no better or worse than I expected and the price fair but at a penny more would be bordering low value for money.

Lovely hostel, difficult guests”

The hostel itself is very nice and well-located. Unfortunately I was staying in a mixed dorm with five very drunken, very loud males on a trip to London. They were extremely loud when coming in at around 2/3am, turning the light on, yelling and laughing, and taking photos. One guest was so drunk he lay on the floor, which was covered in their belongings (you could barely walk through). I tried my best to ignore them, but when they realised I was awake one began trying to talk to me and when I asked them to be quiet he turned to his friend and told them I was probably fat. I tried to ask the staff for help but unfortunately no other rooms were available, and the staff member laughed it off as drunkenness. (Throughout the rest of my stay the staff were lovely and friendly). I felt quite unsafe, and after I managed about two hours sleep I finally gave up and checked out a day early...luckily I have friends just out of the city who let me stay.

Very good”

Price was good. There’s a bar under the hostel so it was quite noisy even late at night but the location is ideal for people who are looking into the party scene at Shoreditch. It’s also close to a Catholic Church which was convenient. There’s also a bus stop right outside. There was only 1 open shower tho. The doors of the other showers were locked for the entire duration of my stay. Plugs were also quite limited.

Rooms are clean and have lockers under bed so there’s space and luggage isn’t everywhere. Has full length mirrors which is unheard of for a hostel. Free breakfast is quite basic but it’s there. Location near lots of bars and reasonably priced Vietnamese restaurants as well as close to brick lane markets and many Indian restaurants. There is a bus which gets you to Oxford Street, Covent garden (west end) etc very close which is handy.

Comfy Bed, Ultra Friendly Staff & Free Breakfast!”

I found the mattress hard enough & suited my spine well. Comfy as I was dead tired after a day's walk in London. Our 6 beds dorm which is facing the main street could be a little rowdy & noisy in the middle of the night though..but if you close the window tight, it should filter out the bar people sound. During our stay, there was 1 night when the water pump couldn't get up to the 3rd floor, so had to go the 2nd floor to shower & with intermittent water pressure managed to have hot shower. The problem was resolved soon enough. It was a rare issue. Showers & toilets are small and a little dirty. Perhaps could be a bit cleaner.. Ultra friendly staff and the simple free breakkie was a winner! Tips: Not to be missed if you like markets & within walking distance are Columbia Rd Flower Market (go anyday), Spitalfields Market (Closed on Sat & Mon; Busiest–Sun), Brick Lane Market (Sun only), Petticoat Lane Market (Mon to Fri) & Leadenhall Market (Mon to Fri 11am-4pm; Best before lunchtime).

price, location, staff

this hostel offers good price, great location, friendly staff, but not really that clean. I bought fried chicken outside and bring it to the hotel room, I left it during the night and in the morning there's a hole in the fried chicken package, looks like rats had it in the night. I'd still recommend this hostel though.

Comfortable bed, nice style and lovely details (flowers).

It was a great stay. Helpfull employees, clean, friendly, value for money. Missed an area to hang out as the kitchen was more for eating and the coffee shop was not open at nights. As the double room is small, it would have been nice to have some other relaxed hang out area. The coffee shop hade lovely tea, but the croissant was dry. Very friendly people.

Very dirty and run down”

It was filthy. There is dust and dirt everywhere. They need to hire proper cleaners, because that is accumulated dirt over years. With a piece of wet toilet paper i made a test on the door frame and it came completely back - and I have pictures of this -. Shower full of mold, smelling disgusting, again, lack of cleaning and ventilation. Location is great, price is alright, but they don't honor what it says in their website that if you book through them directly will be cheaper - , free breakfast and super friendly staff, specially Farid (Fahrid?). They will do renovations soon, so hopefully they improve the cleaning.

Overpriced in great neighborhood ”

The proximity to public transport, shopping & dining, plus the vibrant neighborhood it is in.

We expected a lot better. Checking in took us 2,5 hours in total: had been given the wrong room (in the end solved ok). The shower in the private bathroom didn't give any water - even outside 'rush hours'. Room was just big enough for 2pc of luggage. Staff could have informed better of availability of a safe. Location was really great with lots of places to eat, drink and shop. The area is terrific!
