Great stay”

We were the only ones checked in at that time. We've got a room outside with twin beds instead of a queen bed. The owner was kind enough to let us change the room. We had a pleasant stay at The Happy 8 Retreat. The place is quiet and quite a distance from the city center but still less than 30 mins away

pleasantly surprised, highly recommended”

unique design with a resort feel

We were pleasantly surprised when we have arrived at the hotel. Though it is located in a residential area, you do not feel it the moment you stepped into the hotel. This is a boutique hotel with an unique design for every room, and there is a resort feel to the whole place. Our room has an outdoor bath area and on the second day we were there, it was drizzling lightly in the morning while I was having my shower. But the huge balmy plant managed to provide shelter and I was able to shower without getting "wet" in the rain :)p A totally unique experience. Very satisfied and highly recommended. I will definitely go back if I'm in Ipoh again!

Beautiful guesthouse but be warned”

Artistically designed guesthouse, beautiful bed/bathroom, very comfortable bed

The Happy 8 has been designed and decorated in a stunningly artistic fashion, the amenities, bedroom and semi outdoor rain shower bathroom are wonderful. The major problem is that no taxi driver has a clue as to its location, so if you are coming by anything other than your own car, good luck! Our taxi driver took an hour to find the hotel, which is in a residential area, poorly signposted and relatively new. He charged us 40 ringit, (standard charge would be 8 to 10 )after stopping and interrogating many locals as well as calling the Happy 8 and not receiving adequate directions, became violently angry in the process. It is a fair 20 min walk through a rather desolate neighbourhood to Ipoh centre. The hotel supplies no maps, and the address on their business card is in fact the address of another of their properties, apparently in a deserted industrial estate. The young guy who looks after guests is willing and friendly, but does not have the resources to assist Western guests unfamiliar with Ipoh. When I asked for a map, he printed one rom the computer showing main highways in and out of town...useless! A couple who arrived at the same time and had booked through Agoda had the same trouble with taxis, and were also told that the room they had booked was not available for more than one night, and were sent off to the isolated factory location. They were extremely upset, the poor manager could not help, and the owner was not very forthcoming apparently. Very upsetting, as it was a public holiday and all accommodation in town fully booked. So all in all a beautiful home stay/guesthouse, with a pleasant breakfast included, but a challenge to the first time visitor to Ipoh!

Very enjoyable”

Unique, lovely and comfortable

My sister-in-law and her family stayed in this room while we had the Frangipani room. There is a baliness resort feel to the whole place. There is a suspended bed in the room which my nephew loved it. We called this the "Harry Porter Room" because of the "flying bed" in the air. There is also a huge outdoor bath area attached to the room. My nephew had a great time taking his shower out in the open. In fact, we had recommended this place to our friends who are travelling to Ipoh after we had returned.

We really enjoyed our short stay here. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The room and property have unique and interesting design features. (We hope to incorporate some of the ideas in our own home.) The patio was great for having teh tarik and reading the news in the morning. If we go back to Ipoh, we will definitely stay here again.

A homey little nook with a bucolic tropical vibe”

Intimate, homey, private and filled with gorgeous furniture!

hotel is a bit of a misnomer for this wonderful gem in an unexpected location - in a suburban residental area. it feels more like a private holiday home that you've been invited to stay in while the owners are away. there is no formal check-in, you book and pay through agoda and upon arriving at the hotel, show them your receipt and you'll be handed your keys. there was only one person around, a smiley young guy who spoke little english so if you're hoping to get some local tips on places to eat/go/things to do, you best rely on google. wifi is free in all the rooms, connection is fairly fast and stable. we met the owner's wife the next morning, a lovely lady who tipped us off on where to go for dim sum and it turned out to be a fantastic recommendation. we also found out that she and her husband are furniture manufacturers (their factory is in bukit merah, she offered to take us there) which explains all the stunning, unique wooden furniture that decorates the place. would definitely stay here again on my next visit to ipoh and highly recommend it. note: rooms don't come with breakfast, you have to request and pay separately. we didn't, hence the 'poor' rating - because there is no 'na' button

"Original concept very cozy"”

Ambience, organic concept.

Short stay but satisfying, we will repeat again. Hotel is in a small street not very well communicated on foot but not far from anywhere in ipoh by car. Car park is available right in front. Hotel concept is very original a rooms are comfortable. Hotel is relatively new so staff is learning, but they have the attitude to learn, listen and try to satisfy. Breakfast is nice but very limited in offer, in fact only 1 option in there.

Love all the bathrooms!”

bathrooms, beautifully-designed rooms

If there was a pool, Happy 8 would be simply perfect for a weekend getaway with a group of friends/family. Each room, though priced differently, has its own merit (though the bamboo chalet comes pale in comparison to the rest, to be honest). We had the entire place by ourselves. The caretaker was helpful but allowed us to enjoy as much privacy as possible. Breakfast was a simple but tasty tuna and egg sandwiches. My favourite is the open-air bathrooms.

The staff always come with a smile, they cook delicious breakfast for you when they have time. Each room has a unique design and all rooms are beautiful. However, they provide minimal toiletries. Stunning environment!”

Beautiful and comfortable room design

My parents stayed in Bamboo Chalet for 1 night. It is a corner house exactly beside SJKC Sam Chai. There are just some minor problems: (1) My parents told me that they could not get hot water in their room. (2) The noise of motorcycles during the night is pretty obvious as they are light sleeper. There's no any convenience stores nearby, but they do give you some instant coffee, cookies, and mineral water inside your room. There are water boiler too. As we have car, it make us easier to move around Ipoh town.

A very unique and cosy hotel.”

The rainforest feel of the hotel.

The location of the hotel is quite strange as it is in the residential area and it was a bit difficult to find without GPS. It is quite inconvenience if you dont have transport. Other than this , We were truely impressed with the nature and unique design of the hotel. We chose the Lotus room which has a king bed and a "flying bed". Kids were very excited to use the outdoor shower located in the room itself. The common lobby is very cosy with a lot of unique wooden furnitures and wall painitng. Staff was friendly and helpful . Breakfast was great too. We will sure recommend friends to stay in this hotel .
