Experience the Sanctuary, the Inle Lake that once was”

The Inle Sanctuary at Phayartaung offers a unique opportunity to experience the charm, serenity, and hospitality that used to characterize the greater Inle Lake area before so many hotels and tourist attractions were built up around Nyaungshwe. Phayartaung is far from the frenzy of Nyaungshwe and environs, both literally and figuratively. Staying in one of the six luxurious stilt lodges of the Sanctuary provides the guest not just with a peaceful place to sleep, but also with direct access to the local people of the surrounding area and to the natural resources which sustain them. Whether it is visiting the nearby hot springs, waterfalls, caves, and mountains, interacting with the monks and schoolchildren at the nearby monastery, shopping at the five days market just next door, or being welcomed into local village homes of diverse ethnic peoples, the experiences to be had at The Inle Sanctuary are organic, refreshing, and authentic. These are the deeper experiences, not to be found among crowds of tourists and certainly not to be organized or booked by the routine travel agency. I recommend to book a stilt lodge at Inle Sanctuary directly with the owner; he can also arrange any transportation you may need both to and from the Sanctuary. Then, put all of your other plans and agenda aside-- and just let the incredible experience of a stay at Inle Sanctuary of Phayartaung happen to you. No matter how many days you stay, you'll leave wishing for more...

      Authentic experience”

Far from the touristy are of lake inle, after a 3 hours boat ride during which amazing landscapes will blow your mind you arrive at lake sakar ! a still preserved area where the inle sanctuary is the only hotel. Unfortunately we stayed there only for one night, warmly welcomed, we explored Phayartaung, played some volleyball with the kids in the village and got to the monastery, got a guided visit of its buildings by the teenagers there happy to practitice english and meet foreigners and then we've been introduced to the head monk who kindly insisted on us having dinner there... a wonderful experience ! long things short if u want an authentic experience, a peaceful hotel for ur stay between those amazing landscapes of myanmar lakes you should definitely come here !! worth every penny and every hour of travel !

Luxury, brand new, tranquil, stunningly beautiful, authentic experience, more like visiting family than staying in a hotel”

Our room was absolutely beautiful, teak timber fit out, immaculate, spacious, attention to detail was exquisite. The shower that took up a whole room with breathtaking views of the lake was a favourite. This sanctuary is an eco resort, situated in the quiet area of southern Inle Lake. The food and service of the staff was outstanding, they were highly attentive. The fact that the delightful host 'Aung Min' gives 10% of his profits to the local monastery, which provides a high level of education to orphans and local children was a wonderful bonus. We thoroughly enjoyed paddling in the traditional canoes, watching the full moon rise over the lake, visiting the hot springs, touring the monastery, walking through the village and smiling and interacting with the friendly locals. Aung Min is also more than willing to take visitors to nearby attractions such as caves, waterfalls or even a trek to a nearby village or enjoy a boat tour on the lake. This place is not for those who want to be in a busy hotel, surrounded by tourists. This is for those people who want an authentic experience and to experience the real Myanmar. Thank you to Aung Min, you made our trip to Inle Sanctuary one we will never forget!

Calm, beautiful - worth a detour south of Inle”

We stayed two nights at the Sanctuary and can easily say it was our best hotel experience over the two week trip around Burma -- from the beautiful, tasteful room (complete with the most comfortable bed and linens), to the consistently excellent home-cooking, and the peaceful location. What truly sets this place apart is that the owner, Aung Min, is completely invested in his guests -- he even personally took us on walks and introduced us to the local monastery and village. I recommend spending a day and a night on Inle Lake (the furthest north of the three lakes) to see the major tourist sites up there and then treat yourself to the gorgeous boat ride down to the Sanctuary -- which is on Sankar lake, a much more peaceful, tourist-free place than Inle. Note: the location also sets you up nicely to then go on to Loikaw (about 2 hours further southeast), where you can stay for a few nights and visit some of the more remote tribes, or just catch a flight back to Yangon.

      Charming Phayartaung”

Simply out of this world. 6 cottages on water, lovingly tended to by Aung Min & his Wife and 4 staffs recruited from the nearby school. We chose to arrive via road and leave by boat. The road condition wasn’t fantastic, but view along the way gave us an insight into the real Burmese life. Aung Min manage to squeeze in a day tour of the areas from Nyaung Shwe to The Sanctuary. Upon arrival, we were treated to fantastic home cooked meal served up by Aung Min’s wife. You do have to pay for your dinner here (breakfast provided free), but the cost isn’t marked up compared to some other out of the way resorts. We fell in love with the room the moment we saw them. And the turn down service they provided while we dine was a lovely gesture. Do consider the tour options provided by the Sanctuary, we loved ours where we got to visit the 5-day market, see how rice cracker and rice wine was made and even gate crash a Kayah hunting festival! When we mentioned that we would liked to visit the Monastry at the village, Aung Min decided to give us an impromptu guided tour the next morning. What a sight seeing the hundreds of students attending the free school provided by the monastery! This place is definitely out of the way, but imagine sharing the lovely Phayartaung and the beautiful Samkar lake with only 5 other tourists in the height of the tourist season! Be ready to be charmed by the locals here

      A real sanctuary ”

This resort lives up to its name "sanctuary". It's located in Sankar Lake which is connected to Inle Lake by a narrow passage. The boat trip to the resort, although long (3 hours), is a scenic ride and well worth the time. Once you arrive you would be greeted by the owner Aung Min and his lovely staff. Before we even met Aung Min went out of his way and bought baby nappies for us in the nearby city - he is the best host. The bungalows are absolutely world class and situated in the most surreal setting - each equipped with a balcony that looks over the lake. Sankar Lake is not a touristy area (yet) so there's no other hotel nearby and very few tourist motor boats (unlike Inle Lake). To pass time, you can simply walk to the nearby village, take trips across the lake, peddle the canoe, watch local kids diving or read a book on the balcony of the bungalow. In fact time will pass without you realising it. For the first time in many years we saw sky full of stars. Truly magical. James

      Unspoiled Paradise on the Lake”

The Inle Sanctuary at Phayartaung is a gorgeous escape into nature. We enjoyed cruising past the touristy large hotels to visit this place. The water was crystal clear and the colors of the lake just beautiful. On the way the owner Aung Min set up a tour of Sankar village and the beautiful pagodas at Tharkong. The hotel rooms are clean and have amazing 360 views of the lake. Our family liked the hotel's efforts to use solar power and be cognizant of the environment. All in all a wonderful place situated in paradise!

Amazing gem of a place in a beautiful setting”

The Inle Sanctuary is in a perfect setting on Sankar Lake - it's a beautiful area, quiet, yet lots to explore in the area. The hotel was built with details in mind - the rooms and bathrooms are large and clean and set up so that each room has privacy on its veranda overlooking the lake and mountains. The staff are also extremely warm and helpful - whether during meals or in deciding what to see in the area. The hotel can arrange day tours to villages and sights in the area (all of which see few tourists) or it's possible to explore nearby villages and hot springs by foot. The food is delicious - fresh and with a big variety at each meal, cooked by the owner's wife - and served according to your preferred time. It's easy to get there from Nyaungshwe by either boat (3.5 hours) or car (2 hours) with idyllic views and options for sightseeing along the way. It's also accessible from Loikaw in Kayah State. I stayed two nights and wish I could have stayed for at least three or four!

Best location if you would like to explore unspoiled part of the southern Inle Lake and Sanka Lake. You can still tour the famous floating farm, villages and Indein on the way to this accommodation. The owner Aung Min organised to pick us up from the hotel in Nywangshwe and did all the famous interesting tour in north part of Inle lake all day before reaching to this accommodation. All staff were extremely warm and friendly. We went to Pekon in the middle of Sanka Lake for the 5 day market and visited a wonderful village, rice puff maker (lovely and fun ladies who put the green chilly and bean spread for morning tea for us), beautiful pond and the water fall. Riding the boat in this quiet unspoiled Sanka Lake was the best trip we had in recent years. Unspoiled villagers particularly children warmed our heart enormously. Just the warning we used up all solar hot water the previous night and couldn't get the hot water in the morning. Otherwise we had a wonderful stay.

      A hidden paradise”

The Inle Sanctuary is located on the Sankar lake south of Inle lake. The location is beautiful, peaceful, authentic and unspoiled. The hotel is powered by solar energy, the rooms are well designed, the food is delicious and the staff very friendly. You can learn how to paddle with your feet like the Inntha do on the lake, you can swim in the lake and go on your own to discover the lake with a small wooden boat. This place is a must see for anyone who wants to go off the beaten track.

The place to be at a stunning location”

Take the boat to this place! The voyage is really beautiful, you explore another side of Inle Lake - the authentic untouristy side. The Sanctuary has a stunning location on the lake and is just a 10 minutes walk away from a beautiful, very interesting and welcoming monastery which houses more than 1,000 novices (students). They invite you immediately and everybody wants to practice english ... The Sanctuary is a warm hearted place run by Aung Min - the beautiful manager who does everything for your comfort and happiness. He is lovely and takes his guests for private excursions in the surrounding. The bungalows are just amazing! Extremely high standard and quality. And huge plus terrace with two sunbeds. Ecotourism at it's best - 10 percent of the income go to the monastery. Thanks Aung Min!

This is a great hotel for a few days of relaxing. The cottages are super nice (106 is the best), new and clean. You can watch the fisherman all day from your veranda. The host Aung Min and super nice, ask him to organize a visit to the local monastery. This place is a 4.5h boat ride from Nyaung Shwe. You can include most "standard Inle lake destinations" on the way at little or no extra charge. Shower is solar-powered, so may not be hot early in the morning. No problem later in the day. I would recommend Inle Sanctuary to anyone that wants to stay in a very special, yet affordable place far from the tourist horde.

      Simply amazing!”

We loved every part of our stay at the inle sanctuary. Actually the lodge is not at Inle Lake but on the neighbouring Samka Lake which makes this Place so special and remote. We haven’t seen a single tourist boat for the entire stay! You can expect to find a quiet place with charming bungalows, tasty local and organic food and stunning scenery right in front of your private terrace. The owners are great and make an effort to help the local community and keep everything eco friendly. I would always go back!

Everything was perfect here and it even started before we arrived at the property with the private transfer with sightseeing which was the perfect introduction to the beautiful lake Inle. The couple owning the property is truly kind and dedicated to their guests. The food was the best we had in Myanmar. Everything was fresh, organic, local and cooked to perfection for a reasonable price! The room features incredible views, including from the shower. We were not disturbed by any kind of noise and the staff also made their best efforts to ensure that mosquitoes would not bother us either. The surroundings are very calm which is what you would expect from the lake Inle. You feel completely rested after two nights here. I will warmly recommend this property to all of my friends who plan a trip to Myanmar! It was an unforgettable experience.

Pros 1. Setting No other hotels for miles around, set adjacent to small scale local village and monastery without tourist trappings. Sankar lake even can be quiet without the sound of pasding outboard motors unlike inle lake. 2. Room facilities and plenty of blankets plus restaurant breakfast lunch and dinner were all good quality served in attractive outside setting. 3. Staff...AUng and his wife organised boats to and from the hotel and also hotels in pekon and pilaung for us as there were no hotels with websites or english speaking. Bo took us on an informative and enjoyable early morning trip to monastery and school meeting children doing early morning exercises, cooking breakfast for 100s ,chopping wood, bottling water. The book on the place was interesting too. We went on the lake in a rowing boat we borrowed from the hotel, and visited local hotsprings and temple..all left to find our own way with good instructions...or we could have had a guide if nèeded . Amazing proerty out of this world”

This is a very unique property in a village where the only tourists will be you and the other handful guests of Inle sanctuary. The hospitality and the surrounding are both out of this world. The staff are fresh grads from the neighboring monastery/school and are extremely courteous, caring and genuine. The lake it is situated in is by miles more authentic and serene than the heavily touristed Inle where it's all a show already (still not too bad, though). Could not recommend the place enough and look first to our next visit

      AMAZING”

The Inle Sanctuary maybe my favorite place I've ever stayed (and I've traveled A LOT). Absolutely secluded (no tourists anywhere near) and beautiful. Right by a local village, where the people are so happy to see you (I played volleyball and soccer with some locals), and everyone is so friendly. The service at the Inle Sanctuary is top notch. What you'd expect at a 5 star hotel, without all the fake polite BS. It's genuine and real. The people there are awesome. And the food. Easily the best food I had in all of Myanmar (and so cheap). Everything is fresh and local. Fish from the river. Meats from the local animals. Veggies from the land. I extended my stay while there and will be dreaming about going back. Stay here.

This is a fantastic place to relax and enjoy a very nice moment at the lake Samkar and in the Phayartaung village. The owners and staff are very nice, welcoming and helpful, and advised us some nice walks around. The cottages are super nice, very clean and well arranged. I highly recommend this place and thank so much the hosts for these moments spent there.

One of my favorite places in Burma ”

I will always remember my time at this place, even though it was a very short stay. It took me a long time to arrive and I thought I was lost. I was very stressed, but Aung and his staff (three of them) made me feel at home and very relaxed. A few days before, I injured my foot due to a motor bike accident in Bagan. I could not believe how generous Aung and his staff were. Aung went out of his way to make sure my stay was perfect. I needed a cane for my foot and the nearest store that had it was more than 2 hours away. I told Aung that it was fine and to my surprise, one of his staff made me a cane with a bamboo stick! I was shocked to find out that his staff sanded the holding area of the cane for about an hour so that it will feel comfortable when I hold it. Who does that? The cane is now in my work office so I can always remember this very special place and the very generous people of The Inle Sanctuary. Aung gave me a tour of the town with his car because of my foot. The meals were delicious. It was one of the places of my Burma trip that I was at complete peace, when my days felt long, and a reminder why I love to travel. Thank you so much Aung. Please tell your staff I said hi and I can't wait to come back!
