“Disappointing Experience – A Decline in Hospitality”
We recently stayed at The Leela Mumbai. Having visited before, we had high expectations based on our previous stay. Unfortunately, this time around, the hospitality and overall experience fell far short of what we had previously enjoyed. Check-In Issues: From the outset, the check-in process was impersonal and unwelcoming. The lady at the front desk was standoffish and didn’t take the time to explain anything, leaving us to figure things out on our own. Despite requesting a quiet room, we were placed on the side of the hotel where functions such as weddings were held. The music played until early in the morning, making it nearly impossible to get any rest. Restaurant Cleanliness & Service: At the restaurant, we encountered dirty glasses at lunch, complete with fingerprints. Breakfast the following morning was equally disappointing; our table was left dirty, with crumbs and a mess from previous guests still present. It was clear the staff hadn’t refreshed the setup or cleared up properly. Thankfully, the manager intervened and moved us to a clean table, but such basic oversights shouldn’t occur in the first place. Moreover, we felt neglected compared to other guests. Nobody came to take our coffee order or check if we needed anything. When I pointed this out, the staff brusquely explained that they were “busy.” Meanwhile, we could see other guests receiving much better attention and service. Room Service Issues: In our room, the coffee mugs weren’t replaced with clean ones. When I contacted the concierge to request replacements, only one mug was brought—and it was dirty, with visible lipstick marks. Instead of apologizing, the staff member curtly told me to “contact IRD.” I had no idea what IRD meant and had to ask repeatedly before he clarified it meant “In-Room Dining.” His attitude was unprofessional and dismissive. Key & Assistance Problems: The room key stopped working multiple times during our stay, which created several issues. On one occasion, the key malfunctioned in the lift, leaving us unable to access our floor or the lobby. Another time, while carrying a heavy box, I asked two members of the concierge team for assistance after the key failed again. They refused to help and insisted I go to reception myself, even after I explained the difficulty I was facing. To make matters worse, as I waited, I overheard them talking in Hindi, dismissing my problem as “not their concern.” Departure Mishap: At checkout, I shared my concerns with the Guest Relations Manager, but instead of engaging with me, she simply handed me her card and told me to email her. This approach felt dismissive and insincere, as if she was simply trying to avoid addressing the situation on the spot. The issues continued up to the very end of our stay. We had arranged for the hotel car to take us to the airport. After being told the car was ready, I asked if the luggage had been loaded and was assured it had. However, upon checking the boot, we discovered the luggage wasn’t there. It’s alarming to think we could have left for the airport without it if I hadn’t double-checked. Conclusion: Overall, this visit was riddled with lapses in service, poor communication, and a general lack of attention to detail. From unclean rooms and poor dining experiences to dismissive staff and service failures, the experience was a stark contrast to our previous stay. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously, as the current standard of hospitality does not reflect the level of service one would expect from a hotel of this caliber. Until improvements are made, I would hesitate to return or recommend this hotel to others.
