Wonderful stay ! ”
Great staff who go out of the way to make your stay comfortable!
Extraordinary in so many ways, all of them positive. What a peaceful setting, very close to town
Linden Centre is a uniquely beautiful place with great character in such a peaceful setting so close to old town Xizhou.
Good location but overpriced”
Charming house and courtyards from outside but rooms are very old without any real pleasant amenities, too simple comfort. Overpriced for the service and rooms. Very noisy too because it's an old wooden building.
inspiring place to visit”
Brian and Jeanee Linden make their guests feel welcome, as do the friendly, helpful staff members. The impressive partnerships that Brian and Jeanee have established with townspeople can be seen and felt all over Xizhou, as they are so respectful of local culture and so interested in preserving the cultural heritage of the town. In addition, they provide many free services, such as local tours and bicycle usage. Highly recommended!
Very unique and rare to find in China - an absolute gem of a place and one we would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone. Just wonderful.
A peaceful haven in a beautifully restored house”
The staff was most friendly and helpful. Linden is the family name of the general manager who set up this project to restore the house together with funding from the Chinese government. We really enjoyed talking with Brian Linden who has led a very interesting life. One of the friendly staff took us on a 3 hour (free) tour of the lovely old village of Xizhou with its fascinating market and took us to a place where they make rice noodles. The front desk manager Max gave us a tour of the house and explained about the architecture, etc. - most interesting and informative. The food was good and plentiful. It's best to share your dish. The bedroom was lovely as well as spacious with plenty of place to store one's clothes. The top terrace with a view to the mountains in the distance and rape fields nearby was great for a sundowners.
Terrific stay ”
It cannot be better to stay in a historical place with the sufficient living supplies: the mineral water, the welcome drinks and fruits, even the noise reduction ear plugs! The dinner we had in Linden was healthy and delicious. My friend and I love the terrace on the roof where you can have a grand star view at night.
We had an excellent family visit to the Linden Centre in early January. We've been to Dali before but this was our first stay at the Linden Centre and it added a very rewarding dimension to the visit. The founders of the Centre have beautifully and tastefully restored and maintained a traditional family estate. They and their staff provided excellent suggestions about how to get the most out of our visit. Thus, it was the perfect combination of a fun and informative visit with comfortable accommodations. Highly recommended.
Go there, its worth the $$$”
Very unique, quiet, exquisitely reconstructed old Bai house structure, next to farm fields and cool authentic little Chinese village with open market. we took an excellent cooking class, hade conversations with wonderful staff and owners. this is a classy place, couldn't have been renovated any better. If you need night time action or TV, not a good place for you. the setting is gorgeous.
Extraordinary Place, Extraordinary Experience and Extraordinary People”
Stayed here for 1 night and experienced the most amazing generosity and first class customer service. Breakfast was wonderful, the tour of the centre was very interesting and the morning market / Xizhou village tour was brilliant. Visit to Erhai Tongue of the Lake was also perfect. Customer service was second to none and right up there in terms of what I have experienced around the world. This was the best accommodation experience of my 13 day tour across the Yunnan Province. If anyone comes to Dali and do one thing, then I strongly recommend that they make it a point to stay here - to understand why its such a special place. Special mention to Michael, Max, Caroline, Candy, Emma and of course the special Brian and Jeannie Linden. Thanks for a truly special experience. 10/10!
Don't miss it - a rare gem”
Incredibly lucky to have found The Linden Centre and stay there for two nights. Love the Linden's philosophy behind culturally sensitive tourism and their obvious respect for Chinese culture and its people. Their efforts at sympathetically restoring historic buildings, empowering the local communities and education both local and international guests is admirable. Fabulous food, great atmosphere, a wonderful library, extremely comfortable and well appointed rooms - all complemented by a welcoming and unique culture throughout the centre. If you get the opportunity to stay here then do so, and ensure you spend some time relaxing on the terrace overlooking the fields, town and mountains - a beautiful and relaxing experience.
Good service hotel with great scene”
This is a heritage building at a very good location, you can enjoy the great scenic view from the roof top and there is a library, a cafe & bar for a drink open till 10.30pm. We enjoyed the building introduction which include the historic story of the owner of the house and all the features of the building. Beside, the hotel provided a market tour every morning to let all the guest further get close to local community, we got chance to see the making of the cheese layer (local favorite snack) and also "er kuai" rice cake which is local staple food. All the staff of this hotel are friendly, they make you feel like you back to home.
Great hotel, peaceful yet very convenient”
Very easy to get a cab from the hotel to almost everywhere in Dali. The hotel has an activity room with pool table and table tennis which was our 3 year-old's favorite. The patio with a view of the rice paddy was great, very relaxing. Food was good too, especially for our little one - it was a bit hard to find non-spicy/salty local food outside of the hotel.
VISIT THE LINDEN CENTRE!!”
Amazing experience for my wife and me - what the Lindens have accomplished (and are continuing to do) is incredible! They have found a way to end up on the correct side of the fine line that is restoration vs. redevelopment. Really respect that they have taken a culturally respectful and locally-focused approach to sustainable tourism (absolutely no one should pretend that this is not tourism - least of all the Lindens). Check it out for yourself!!
Linden is more than just a place to stay.. Its possibly one of the best hotel experiences in China . Being an expat who lives here , we found it to be of the highest order, food, service, outlook, atmosphere, location, decoration all outstanding .. well worth a visit.
A place of peace...”
I truly enjoyed my stay at the Linden Center even though it was shortl. It's in an amazing location giving you a taste of the local culture, the staff is wonderful and willing to help at a moment's notice. The founders are amazing and take the time to visit with all who come. It's an exiting but yet peaceful and restful place. I hope to visit again.
Although mentioned in the Chinese version of the Lonely Planet guide for Yunnan as appealing to a largely non-Chinese traveller profile, this place is popular with the new generation mainland urban travelista demographic. I spotted groups of families from Shanghai staying there and various groups of wedding photography enthusiasts on the field outside the centre.
Excellent food and staff”
Memorable dinner. Dishes were well-cooked and homely. A very serene stay overlooking the rice fields in the morning. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Among all the facilities, I like the library best. Breakfast was average.
Wonderful location, passionate about sustainable tourism”
We had a wonderful two-night stay at the Linden Centre. Brian and Jeanee went out of their way to help accommodate us, despite being booked out due to a holiday crowd -- and we were grateful they did so! It is clear that they have poured their passion into developing a model that allows travelers to interact with and experience the local culture. Their staff are dedicated to hospitality. Definitely worth a visit.
