Charming”

The Madsen Boutique Hotel is located right on the waterfront in the small town of Penguin. Formerly a bank, it has been skillfully adapted into a small, but very personal hotel. The current owners are most engaging and take pride in showing the newly-arrived guest around, including outlining some of the building's history in its various previous incarnations. It would appear that the current owners have also upgraded the hotel's decor. We stayed in the least expensive room of the 4 or 5 on offer and it was very pleasant. As the hotel has very few rooms, it's not practical for the owners to offer full bar facilitites, so they have provided an 'honesty' self-serve bar instead which genuinely provides a hotel 'feel' as opposed to a tourist B&B. Our breakfast was excellent. Eggs cooked exactly as we asked, and the bacon, mushrooms and tomatoes were perfect. A little less than perfect was our bathroom ... it was a bit 'tired' and offered only a shower. But we would certainly stay there again as there is much to like about this quaint little gem.

Hidden gem in Penguin”

Room, View, Service

We had a fantastic time staying in the Penthouse suite at the Madsen. The room is large with all the amenities needed and a fantastic view looking over Penguin beach.Phil the host was very friendly and helpful. The town of penguin is sleepy, Beautiful and a great base to experience the north west coast of Tasmania. The madsen is on our list to do again for sure.

The best in Penguin!”

Comfortable room, great breakfast, nice staff

Having traveled for quite a number of hours, this is definitely the one you can recharge your energy. The room was so nice that makes you feel like home (with Foxtel!) together with the lovely spa. Sadly Monday and Tuesday most of the restaurants in Penguin were not open, and we had to drive to the nearby time, but just need 15 minutes only. Moreover, the breakfast there was something you could not miss - lovely scramble eggs with beacon and baked tomato. Speechless!

Above average”

No staff at the desk for a 5pm check-in but it was an easy process calling the mobile number by the door. The location is right on Penguin Beach nestled within a short strip of restaurants and shops. It seems like the front rooms are the pick of the bunch, we found our back room to be quite stuffy (we kept the window open), tv didn’t work and bathroom cleaning/spiderwebs could do with a bit more attention to detail. This didn’t bother us so much for 1 night stay but doesn’t fit with the 4.5 star rating. The honesty bar is such a lovely idea, we didn’t partake but is thoughtful feature. Suggest booking the El Parro restaurant ahead of your stay as they book out in peak season and there is very limited dining options within walking distance.

Excellent”

A great property with a lot of charm! Stayed in the executive spa room, was really spacious and comfortable. The spa is only a bath spa and best suited for one, but was relaxing. Overall very happy with the stay. My only criticism was of the TV. Was very old, didn’t have any way to watch Netflix etc like most places are going and the provided Foxtel box was not functional and there wasn’t a remote to even operate it. Just a small note in an overall great stay!

Thank you for drawing our attention to the old generation NEC TV that is in the Executive Spa Suite that is being replaced by a newer Panasonic digital TV so that guests can enjoy streaming services. We disabled the Foxtel when the government shut us down in March because of Covid-19 and although we reopened in June we don't think it will be functioning until sometime in 2021 after tourism returns to normal.

Did not get the room we booked.”

We were ‘upgraded’ to a 3 bedroom apartment, which was further down the road, not near our friends. We found out late at night that the toilet was blocked and there was no hot water. We had to stay in that room overnight and were moved back to another room at the original facility, but had to wait until midday. We were not offered a refund for the previous night. In the new one bedroom self contained unit, the bed was a mattress and base directly on the floor, so was quite low down to the ground and in the bathroom you have to step up into the shower. If you are elderly this a hazard as you have to lean on the sink for balance to climb out of the shower as there is no bars to hold onto. There was also cobwebs around the room in the corners....... it’s a shame that we didn’t get the room that we booked originally as we had friends who stayed in the main building and they said it was lovely.
