We arrived late in the night and our keys were waiting for us! All we needed was a hot bath and a nice bed and we got in, plus we woke up the other day and didn't have to drive for hours to get to Edimbrugh. Great location. True the sink is a bit small, but you can always use a glass to fill the kettle! ;)
Really great value for money!”
We were looking to have a weekend in Edinburgh but not fork out for accommodation. We chose Mayville because it was on a direct bus route into town. We ended up walking, which was only 20 minutes. Bed was squeaky, but other than that, a really comfortable room and free parking!
shabby but gorgeous main house”
it's a cool old victorian with a cluttered and cool dining area. breakfast is just ok and our room was poorly cleaned, though. linens were fine but there were some wrappers around and moths and was just a bit musty smelling. owner is nice.
Gem of a place!”
We loved this accommodation and wished we could have stayed more nights here! The gentleman who manages it is very friendly, helpful, and interesting to talk to. The continental breakfast was fresh and tasty and the house itself is old, but kept up and beautiful. Our room (2 double beds) was typically small, but well furnished with comfortable beds, tv, wifi, and a clean en suite toilet/shower room. Beautiful view of the back yard area from our window. 30 min walk to central Edinburgh (Royal Mile) straight down the street. 15 min to Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat. Nice residential area. Took an Uber to the Airport at the cost of 17 pounds. We would definitely recommend this to other travelers and would stay again should we return to Edinburgh.
Booked here for a night in Edinburgh and wasn't disappointed. The staff were extremely helpful, even letting us check in early and park the car while we walked into town. The room, although basic, had a new bed which was extremely comfortable. Even got a breakfast in the morning too, all for just £38. Overall, a really good value for money stay. Would recommend, as long as you don't mind a 25 min walk into town (although there are bus stops very close by to get you there quicker).
Friendly host, warm atmosphere and temperature!”
Got this room very cheap so was expecting basics but it was lovely. A grand guest house with traditional decor. It was really warm throughout which was welcomed. There were fresh towels and toiletries as well as a kettle and a fridge and tea, coffee. We even got a 4 poster bed as advertised. Really impressed with this place! The host told us there was a complementary breakfast of tea and toast but we missed it so I can't comment on that. Nice to know that you could get something though!
lovley place and hostes”
the room is sweet andcomfertable breakfast is grate. the manager is so helpfull and nice and really care about you. location is good, you can walk or take a bus just out side to the center. and area is good with places to eat and shop. I came back there also on my last night since i klove the place!
Thommy is doing everything over there !! A very nice person, helping with everything, even with good informations around Edinburgh and a nice stay. The rooms are very lovely and clean. Very familiar atmosphere.

The very friendly and helpful manager engenders and warm and comfortable atmosphere . The family room is huge and we loved the humorous touch of the old Scottish cartoons. The bed are comfy, adding a good nights sleep. It's positioned 10 to 15 minutes walk from the royal mile. There are many shops and restaurants along the road into the centre of the city providing a variety of options. The guesthouse was once a merchants villa; retaining all its period features and furnished in a similar style. It is quite wonderful and for me, worth a stay in itself It could be a little cleaner but I sympathies as houses such as these very large and difficult to clean, comprising of many nooks and crannies as was the taste of the rich victorian merchant class. The none-cooked breakfast was varied, plateful and enjoyable; particularly as it was set in the splendid front room. All in all my family and I enjoyed our stay.
Brilliant Little Place, Walking Distance to Everything”
My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon, and would again. Our only concern, it being our honeymoon, was how close our room was to the common area. The walls are not soundproofed in the least. That said, the host was friendly and accomodating, breakfast was at a reasonable hour (we missed it the morning after our pub crawl, but that was our own fault), and the walk to all of Edinburgh's major attractions was reasonable. I would happily stay there again, though I might insist on a different room. :)
Wonderful Value near City Center”
My favorite thing about this place was how near it was to the city center while not being in a tourist trap neighborhood. A short walk from the Mayville gives you a look at a pleasant part of residential, living Edinburgh- cafes, pubs, shops, grocery stores, and so on, until you hit the Royal Mile and all the rest. The room was spacious (though maybe just a hair on the ostentatious, almost garish side, if pretending you live in a palace decorated by a prom queen is your thing. Also- VERY creaky bed! Feels like the whole place knows if you've got up to use the bathroom or rolled over to get comfy). The owner was very friendly and knowledgeable about the attractions of the city, and had plenty of recommendations based on our interests. The place boasts an attractive dining room as well.
reasonable price and a comfortable stay.”
we read so many reviews online and at first we didnt expect much as we paid around 76 pounds for three nights. but when we got in the room, we really "wow" . we did not look for brand new hostel or guest house. but in general, the room is clean and the only staff did tidy up our room a bit each day. they got very simple breakfast but we are happy with that, cereals n bread n toast n u got tea n coffee etc. cool enough! of course it can be even more cleaner n the location takes 20-25 mins walk to city centre.but there's always bus to go there n the bus station takes less than 3 mins walk. it's really quiet at night so we had good sleep. another thing we love most is this guest house is really close to Arthur's seat which takes around 10 mins to go there. if u wanna hv the best sunrise photo, u shld choose a stay next to it.the price we paid is more or less the same with the mixed hostel at city centre. but with a room for only we two, this is definitely a wise choice to stay.
Far from city, Wifi unstable, Entrance locked”
-located very far from city (must take bus-daily ticket GBP4) -simple breakfast offered -Wifi available but cannot be connected -entrance is locked and cannot be opened by key at night, need to wake staff up by phone call -clean room but not so bright -no hot water from shower -only 1 male staff
Value for money accommodation”
A very warm welcome awaited us at The Mayville. An old Victorian building with ornate décor. Warm bedrooms with adequate furnishings, flat screen television and tea making facilities. Piping hot water, toiletries and beautiful white towels. Complimentary breakfast, or optional full English also available. The Manager was very helpful with good local knowledge and very accommodating to our party. Certainly would use this establishment again.
Recommended for budget traveler and the host is really nice
Homey experience ”
The owner was friendly and always around to help for the entire day. The location was fine, with half an hour of walk to the city center and bus stops just outside of the house. The room was nicely decorated. But cleaning needs some improvement. I had a dirty glass with dried coffee inside...
Found a bug crawling on the bed in the morning. There was also empty cartons on milk when we arrived. Guest wr very very noisy and woke us up. Only managed about 2 hours sleep due to the plastic sheet on the bed. We wr doing the 26 mile kilt walk and couldn't get breakfast because we had to leave at 8.
Do not stay there!!! Bed bugs, filth & grime! ”
I arrived exhausted and just wanted a nice shower, & bed. All good so far. I got into bed, and within a few minutes, I could feel something crawling on my legs. Then I felt little stings of pain. I jumped out of bed, threw back the covers to find hundreds of bed bugs crawling all over the sheets! I had been bitten, had large red swellings all over my body, and was bleeding. Next day I complained to the manager, who gave me another room - with even more unpleasant surprises! Again more bed bugs, & filth & grime, but this time no hot water, shower handle broken, mound growing in the shower!! While showering water escapes through rotting wood, into the bedroom!!! That place is a health hazard & should be shut down. I have had to get medical attention due to the severity of the bites over a 4 night stay. Spoiled my holiday. I complained to Agoda, & sent in photos.
Didn't look clean ”
Friendly staff, when got to the room the carpet had marks all over it looked like it hadn't been hoovered the bathroom had a funny smell and dust all over the skirting board, shower didn't look clean. Everything was painted blue wardrobes, light shades etc. The mattress was so uncomfortable you could feel all the springs so hardly any sleep just glad we where just there for 1 night as everywhere else was fully booked 😩 Overall bad experience and would never go back.
DO NOT STAY HERE. FLTHY ROOM & BEDS INFESTED WITH BED BUGS!”
The carpets have nor been vacuumed in at least 6 months. When I got into bed, I was instantly covered with tiny, insects, from head to foot! I threw back the sheets & to my horror I saw hundreds of insects crawling in the bed. They bite me, and there were blood stains all over the sheets. I didn't get any sleep, & was in agony & discomfort. When I told the manager, I got the impression that this had happened before?? Do not stay here. Really, it's not what it seems. House of Horror in Edinburgh!!!
