It’s definitely got a rep...”

Reading the reviews for this place was some of the most fun I’ve had on Agoda in years. No joke... check them out! It’s all polarized! This said, I didn’t find the place that bad. It’s classic downtown San Fran architecture, which means a bit old. The WiFi is weak in the rooms. And the elevator that scares the bejeezus outta everyone is great—it’s an old school one that jolts after the wooden door slides shut. We loved it! Staff was also cool, helpful and friendly. The homeless thing isn’t only an issue here. There are lots of homeless people in San Fran, but they aren’t dangerous. I even stopped and chatted some of these guys up, listened to some wacky life stories. Not recommending it... just saying, I only felt unsafe immediately after having arrived. It’s not super, but it’s also not that bad. Just a tad overpriced, but then it is San Francisco...

I give it 3 stars due to location. ”

I used to live in SF for over 17 years but moved away to the midwest 4 years ago. The Monarch Hotel did not disappoint. The hotel was clean. The beds were made and changed with fresh sheets everyday. It was super affordable. You can't find anything cheaper and we did not want to stay at a hostel. There were tons of good restaurants, bars and night life on Polk Street. Yes, the neighborhood borders the Tenderloin but all of SF is filled with the homeless. You can't get around that. I liked the fact that I could walk 15 mins and I would be at Civic Center Bart or I could be at Union Square. Although, this is more of a 3 star hotel, I give it 4 stars for staff, cleanliness and central location.

The good, the bad, the ugly. ”

The good: close walk (~1.5 miles) to either Fisherman's Warf or to Union Square which means easy access to entertainment such as Pier 39, Big Bus tours, Alcatraz, Chinatown, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, and the old time Trolley rides. Great food options in the area, especially along Polk Street, which the hotel is on the south end of. The room was unexpectedly VERY quiet despite the hustle of downtown traffic and activity. The bad: hotel's bed was cheap and squeaky, and the shower head produced a small, slow stream of water. So one less star rating on the facility. The ugly: not the hotel's issue, but it's in an area of town where there are lots of homeless and trash on the streets. With that said, the homeless folk never once bothered us or panhandled etc. And if you don't intend to walk 4-5 miles each day to visit the tourist sites, including hills, then you may want to stay closer to the pier.

Okay but you can find better”

Pros: One of the more affordable hotels in the city Helpful staff Sunny, large lobby with free coffee 24hrs Good selection of restaurants nearby Good access to downtown by bus 38 Cons: Homeless camped in tents below my window who argued every night til 11pm (but hotels twice the price have this problem too) Daily visits by firetrucks to bldg across the street Can hear conversations in adjoining rooms

The hotel is owned by a Singapore company, not an American company. Nice inside, room was fashionable. Great value. Tommy's Place (bar/casual restaurant) and breakfast place a block away. Bus route close by - use 'moovit app'. Homeless are around but seem harmless.

Decent hotel”

The hotel needed some work are room was a little old school and it didn’t come with a microwave, Mini fridge and the hotel doesn’t come with parking had to pay $80 at a parking garage for 2 days so keep that in mind when you book a room here but besides that the location is great if your going to any event at the bill graham or anything around that area.

Old room not recommend at all in rhe internet page they offer parking, refrigerator, hair dryer but at the end nothing we had to pay $32 for parking in a near parking garage the room was in a very bad shape they didn't even had doors for the closet. The bathroom shower was dripping water everywhere honestly I don't recommend this hotel at all and also our view was the buildings next door haha they had a party all night and we could sleep at all because it was really noisy.. We call to complain about everything that was wrong and the person in charge was supposed to come to us and gave us another room but never showed up so we had to stay there because we had kids and couldn't be moving to another hotel because they were sleeping and also a lot of homeless people around the streets smell horrible

You don't get what you pay for”

Internet didn't work on any of my 3 devices. The only answer from the staff was that I was working for him, I'm sorry. The hotel looks really old and completely outdated with very used carpets and very poor equipment in the rooms. When you pay for a hotel you expect a lot more,.. even in San Francisco. This is probably one of the worse hotels in town for the price they ask and I've been in a lot of hotels of the same price-range...

Hotel is old, dirty carpet, elevator super old ”

I booked through Agoda and requested a room for 4 people 2 adults and 2 kids, between the options they gave me they had one labeled Queen room so I thought was a room with queen beds, it saids you could fit 2 adults and 2 kids, when I arrived there was a room with just ONE queen bed for 4 of us, so either the description was wrong which Agoda told me it was correct or they fooled me because it was non reimbursable. So I ended paying for an upgrade for a double bed room which costed in total the same as on really ggod hotes. They said they hace parking thats another lie ther is parking on the street, you will end up paying $20 for 12 hours which is a cost you should add into the advertised cheap hotel price. Regretful of choosing that hotel totally. Go with Aibnb not Agoda.
