Joys of Jogja”
Before choosing my accomodation for my stay in Yogyakarta, I had checked out the Customer Reviews for the various hotels listed by Agoda. The reviews for the Phoenix were mainly positive but one can never ever be sure until one gets to experience the hotel personally. And what a wonderful and memorable experience it was. The Phoenix comes with all the amenities and trappings that one would expect from any modern hotel but it retains an old world charm that would endear it to any discerning guest. It's a pity that I did not get to try out its spa or its gym, due to a packed itinerary that included a pre-sunrise climb up Mt Merapi and excursions to Borobudur and Prambanan, but there is no doubting the excellent level of room comfort and, except for the problem i had with securing smaller denominations of the local currency, the admirable promptness of response whenever I had a service request. The location of the hotel was excellent, with a 24-hour convenience store less than 100 metres away, beside which is the Tiga Nyonya Restaurant, an oasis of epicurean delights. The Malioboro Street, the main shopping street in Jogja was also nearby as was the Kraton (the Sultan's Palace). While I usually eat outside of any hotels that i stay in, i did have one meal sent up to my room - Mangut Kerapu Lolos Duri, a dish based on an ancient Yogyakarta recipe, which was served with steam rice and, on request, a not insignificant portion of sambal terasi. It turned out to be one of the best meals that i had during my stay in Jogja. The staff members were very welcoming and always had a smile on their faces. When i had asked for names and locations of good restaurants offering local fare, the recommendation provided by one of the hotel staff was spot on and led to my enjoying a simple, inexpensive yet delicious lunch of rice with bebek goreng (fried duck) at a nearby eatery. In summary, the Phhoenix is a hotel that i would highly recommend to any visitor to Jogja. Expectations of

Charming Colonial Hotel ”
Wonderful hotel at Prime Location with world class service! No kidding. If you see all the reviews here, I am telling you they are all writen from the heart for a reason! I stayed here with my husband and his colleague and his wife. We all agreed on one thing: we will come back at this hotel when we visit Yogya! And we will for sure tell our friends and relatives to do so. I believe it doesn't matter how perfect the hotel is if the staffs are not well trained and the service are poor, forget it. It wont be such a good experience too. This hotel comes with a perfect package. The staff is for sure have been trained well to cater their customers who come from everywhere. They are very attentive. One thing only need improvement is the female front desk at that day we checked in was not very smily but the male front desk when we checked out was amazing. But well it is not a big issue. Location wise is at a prime location close to Tugu Yogya the icon of Yogyakarta and about 10 minutes walking to Maliboro where the hustle and busy street selling lots of batik etc. When we entered the hotel we were greeted by a wonderful smell. Smell so good we'd like to buy the aromatherapy they use but we forgot to ask. The hotel is inside the city centre yet we still can feel the calmness of the place. Very relaxing place. We loved every creative details in the room. The way they place the amenities inside wood carving Javanese couple, the birdcage as mini bar and sweet ginger candies in the glass container. Relaxing in the pool and their breakfast are another additional plus. Their local breakfast was delicious, love the variety of Javanese cuisine they offered to us and the western breakfast was delish too. As many reviewers suggested to try the restaurant accross the road Madam Tan, we must agree it is worth a visit! Thanks Phoenix Hotel you make our trip in Yogya more amazing! Cant wait to get back there again!

colonial charm in the heart of yogya”
during a recent visit to java, my son and i spent two memorable nights in the gracious and charming phoenix hotel, located just off marlioboro street in the bustling heart of yogyakarta. the phoenix is a lovely hotel, which has been sensitively restored to reflect the splendour of a by-gone era. rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated. our twin room had a balcony which overlooked the inner courtyard, resplendent with trees and a gently slashing fountain. we found all hotel staff to be polite, helpful, efficient and well-presented. the breakfast buffet was lavish, and it is clear that this hotel prides itself on maintaining very high standards in all areas of service. it seems carping to focus on any perceived shortfalls, as overall our stay at the phoenix was extremely comfortable and enjoyable. perhaps in an ideal world the bathroom could have been a little more spacious, but it was more than adequate and certainly very clean and well maintained. we found the food a little pricey by yogya standards, but as there is an award winning nyonya restaurant just across the street, which serves the best food in yogya at unbelievably good prices, this wasn't really an issue. highly recommended!

A true memorable hotel”
I chose this hotel since I like staying at historical buildings. Still, The Phoenix Hotel blows me away with its quality for exterior and interior design that is rich with a touch of European and Javanese style. All rooms like its lounge, restaurant, our room, a hall way, etc are simply elegant. The staffs are very friendly and attentive. We were staying there only for 2 nights and they greet us often, especially calling my name - who registered for the stay. The buffet breakfast was good. We had an opportunity to sample many local foods and keep my healthy lifestyle (e.g. by having fresh fruit juices and pro-biotic yoghurt). The local foods also taste original with a slight adjustment. I know as I am also Indonesian. :-) The hotel is located in Jend Sudirman that is relatively close to cultural attractions. I could have walked to the Palace on foot around 30 minutes. I did not do that as the air was very dry and making Yogyakarta very dusty that time. The only slight opportunity for this hotel is its super secure wi-fi that keeps asking me to punch user ID and passcode every time my phone was automatically locked. Still, I list The Phoenix Hotel in my favorite hotel to stay and I will definitely come back. :-)

Old World Charm in the Heart of Yogyakarta”
Over the past 25 years I have visited Yogyakarta many times both for business and for sight seeing. As with so many 'hidden' treasures it took the recommendation of a close friend to bring me to the Phoenix Hotel. Like myself she has been to Yogya many times and The Phoenix Hotel is her favorite home away from home when she is in the area. My first impression was of a timeless elegance from an earlier time. The staff are warm and gracious and the open-air central courtyard makes you feel you are in a lovely tropical setting not in the middle of a busy city. After a full day of travel and business in traffic and heat it is a welcome retreat to enter the lobby and be transported into cool colonial elegance. The food service was excellent and the morning breakfast buffet one of the most creative and impressive in Indonesia. The rooms are on the small side with only a few centimeters between twin beds the amenities are lovely and the snacks are in hanging bird cages. We stayed on the send level with a balcony from which volcanos could be seen to the north. Loved our stay and highly recommend it!

Beautiful Hotel”
We loved our stay at The Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta. The architecture is beautiful and the food too is beautifully presented. This hotel has one of the biggest breakfast buffets we've ever seen. Our room was not large, but it was comfortable and clean. The hotel's history is interesting. Don't go for the free tour of the hotel as it's short and boring. Instead, ask for the brochure with the hotel's history. Another great thing about this hotel is the spa, which was very good. The spa also had promotions for the first and last day of your stay at the hotel. To tour around Yogyakarta, just book a car with the hotel for a half day or a full day to take you around the sights.

Nice, classic hotel with excellent service.”
the phoenix is a classic hotel with classic ambiance. the food is excellent, as is the service. the room was nothing remarkable, but nicely appointed and very well maintained. one issue is that the hotel is rather isolated, with few other hotels or restaurants nearby. there are a couple of hotels not too far away, and a few fast-food places within 6-10 blocks. but not much else. the good part of that is that you definitely feel like you're in a local neighborhood, if you like to taste the local flavor. also, there are cheap bicycle taxis and regular taxis available to take you to other areas of the city. the two major temples in the yogyakarta area are within about one hour and two hours, respectively, so the hotel is a decent place to serve as your "headquarters" in yogyakarta.

Delightful hotel with excellent service!”
My friends and I really had a pleasant stay at Phoenix Hotel Yogyakarta, very much enjoyed it. My friends whom had their first visit to Yogyakarta also loved and pleased with the "hidden gem" in the city. They said that this hotel is even better than the hotel at Surabaya (2nd biggest city in Indonesia). Not forgetting, the hotel staffs welcomed us with very warmth service. Nice rainshower, love the balcony, fluffy bed! Compared with my local travel agent, we also got the best rate from Agoda! two thumbs up for Agoda :)

Great Stay at Phoenix”
I have to say I have an amazing time staying at Hotel Phoenix Yogyakarta. First of all is the staffs. From the very first checkin till checkout, all smiles. A quick tour explaining the facilities as well as history of the hotel--which was both interesting and educational--was provided by the bellboy while carrying our bags to the room. This itself shows that the hotel shows different standard than other hotels claiming to have the same stars in the area. This hotel has very nice architecture and interior, combining traditional javanese and classical victorian. The room itself Is modern, but still maintain traditional feels to it. I had a room with balcony, viewing the pool--which is a very nice view. The only thing I dislike about the room is it doesnt have a bathtub. The hotel is very well located. Taxis and Becak are always standby at the entrance, to take us anywhere within the city. It took us less than 10 minutes and less than IDR 15,000.00 (about USD 1.00), to reach Malioboro, the street famous for shopping and cullinaire. A very nice surprise come on the second day of our stay which happened to be my birthday. We left rather early for a trip to Borobudur. When we return to our room, a chocolate birthday cake, with words saying Happy Birthday and my name next to it, was already waiting in the room. I was impressed by the gesture and not to mention that the cake was very delicious. The breakfast and also dinner has good variety, mix of traditional food as well international. Will certainly return to this hotel.

classic colonial gem in the heart of Yogyakarta”
Yes, it's pricey. Food is also pretentious and expensive. But this is the famous Phoenix. We stayed one night in the rice patties outside Borobudur, and then we shifted to the Phoenix. The moment you step in, you feel like you've traveled back in time during the days of British and Dutch explorers. But don't let the classic design of the hotel fool ya. Everything inside is well furnished and quite modern, yet it retains the colonial, exploration-theme look and feel. The rooms could be larger, but it's just perfect for some rest and relaxation after a busy day of touring the famous temples, street markets, etc. There's a convenience store across the street, but do be careful when traversing through the sometimes crazy Yogyakarta traffic. Our balcony had a beautiful view of the city and sunrise, plus the cemetary to the left. Oddly, there's only one outdoor chair. Everything about the room is what you would expect from a 5 star. The bathroom did feel a bit cramped, and there was no bathtub. All the staff are very friendly, although the restaurant staff are not as sharp and professional as I had wanted them to be. Food was expensive but were of large portions. If your stomach can handle it, I recommend you explore the local food joints around the neighborhood instead. Our room was in a wing away from the main lobby, so it required a 5 minute walk through the inside courtyard and through a few corridors. Nothing that will tire you out, but a small bit of inconvenience. Overall, a fantastic experience still.

Excellent hotel, well located, great stay”
We had an excellent few nights stay in Yogyakarta. Definitely recommend making the effort and getting up early to visit Borobudur Temple at sunrise. The Phoenix Hotel was excellent. It's basically on the main road from the airport, but not that far away from the tourist sights within the city probably too far to walk comfortable though. Taxi's are easy to get hold of, as the hotel will hail them off the taxi stand for you, and then you are guarenteed to pay just the meter price. Getting home also easy, as everyone seems to know the Phoenix hotel. Restaurant was excellent... all in all, a great stay.

A grand yet elegant sanctuary within Yogyakarta”
having found yogyakarta itself a bit of a let down, we found the phoenix hotel a great retreat. stepping inside you are transported through time and away from the busy streets, traffic, hustle and general disorder of yogyakarta. we really enjoyed the exquisite decor and art found in every corner of the hotel. the rooms were very comfortable with great beds. the dining area and central courtyard were wonderful to relax in. the variety of menu and quality of food were great. the staff are very friendly and helpful. do try the house special cocktail, the gin sling, it's nicely presented to you by the waiters, and it makes for a good start to the evening.

The happening hotel in town (at the time being)”
Never get bored to this city (Yogyakarta such a heritage city) and this hotel location right in the middle of city center near to Malioboro, Angkringan (kind of street food seller with various delicious local menu) its different with "Lesehan". Must try when you're there. Trully in love with this hotel and their welcoming service and must say, all the great service along our stay. Most of the guest is overseas tourist, only about 20% is local (Indonesian) based on my sight when I was stay there in public school holiday (4-6 July 2011). Phoenix is almost near everywhere, need-not-to worry if you don't rent a car you could go to some interesting place around by Becak/Delman (traditional vehicle) or rent a bike. Its cheap.

Colonial Yogyakarta Splendor”
Having only one night in Yogyakarta after a day spent visiting Prambanan and surrounding smaller temples, we wanted to be in the central part of the city and this hotel was a perfect choice for catching an early morning train back to Jakarta. It has colonial Indonesia architectural beauty and charm with walls adorned with local art and antiques; photography, metal batik molds and beautiful painted wood hand carved doors and frames. We were greeted with afternoon tea by an attentive staff before happy hour in the well appointed bar. Breakfast is served in a dining room with a glassed over water canal running at floor level along one side. I wished we had stayed an extra night to have more time to enjoy the hotel and to wander through the artists shops behind the white walls separating the city from the smaller streets of Sultans palace grounds – we did get to visit the House of Wayang in Kampung Gebulen to watch generations of Wayang Puppet makers creating beautifully detailed shadow puppets. Our room #262 overlooked the pool garden with French doors opening on to a balcony with small coffee table. A bowl of fruit in the room included several Salak (snake skin fruit), which have a sweet/sour apple flavor that I came to love and will always identify with Yogyakarta.

As marvelous as expected ”
From our 3night stay,I can say that the hotel is very much heritage looking and a little mixture of European and Asian decor, the room I stayed in was the deluxe room,it was just perfect for the 3 of us and I just love the pool view so much. The staff were all very helpful and friendly, they gave us a very warm vibe. Not only that, I personally enjoyed the food both local and international,it was equally good, thumbs up. The location of the hotel is just 1km (approximately) from the Malioboro market and also not far from the airport. Even though the spa (My Spa) I may say is not the forte of the hotel but it's very relaxing and it's not pricey (especially if u take the couple package). No matter what time you call them for room service,it's always very good and quick. The Phoenix hotel,it is guaranteed to be the best in Yogyakarta :)

Home away from home”
We intended to stay 3 nights in this hotel and due to the eruption of Mt. Kelud, we were stranded in Yogyakarta and chose to stay here for additional 5 more nights until the airport was opened for business. I must say their service was superb, they were very attentive to the needs of their guest, as the whole city was enveloped by ash and hard to go out! They made sure we have ample water, coffee, etc. And our needs were met. Their buffet breakfast is very nice. We had afternoon tea before the eruption and was very nice too. I liked their swimming pool too. Good thing we were staying at this hotel when a fortuitous event like this happened, we could not think of anywhere else! More power Phoenix Hotel!

A Gorgeous, Affordable Haven Within the City.”
I can only echo the sentiments of every other delighted reviewer of this hotel. The "herbal remedy" bar at breakfast was much appreciated, as I had a cold during my stay. As for the tour prices - the only thing people seem to complain about with respect to the Phoenix - if you find the hotel's rates too high, the bellman is more than happy to call a taxi over for you and even assist in the price negotiation. The hotel staff have no problem whatsoever accommodating your tour around Yogyakarta or to Borobudur on your terms.

Amazing buidlind and top service”
the hotel is located not far away from the city center. the building itself could be a tourist sight because of historical reasons. even if you don't live there, i would recommend you to visit or have a breakfast in the patio. love the decorations in the building. the front desk could help arrange a 30-min in-house tour for customers of the hotel every afternoon., during which they will tell stories about the adornments, the facilities, and the history. at the end of the tour, they will lead you to the spa and provide ginger tea and cold towle. you cound then arrange a 15-min complimentary massage. but the massage staff are quite busy so better book in advance. rooms are not spacious, but comfortable enough. our lovely balcony overlooks the street and the residential area nearby, providing a quiet and private space for you to take a rest. breakfast was amazing, with so many choices including western and traditional yogyakarta dishes. catering staff were so nice and willing to offer help at all times. besides the beautiful scenery in the yard and the delicious food on the table, you could also enjoy the traditional instrumental performance during breakfast, which is a special experience. we walked in to the the nice hotel next door to have breakfast on the last day. turned out it was also an excellent meal. could be an alternative if you feel like somthing new. don't miss the lovely swimming pool. it was quietly located in the inner region of the building. we saw a giant snail passed by elegantly. the pool is even more beautiful in the evening. however it shuts down at 7pm, a bit too early. you can still visit after 7, but are not allowed to swim and make noise, as it's surrounded by buildings. front desk/concierges were really helpful and answered lots of our questions and provided suggestions regarding where to visit or have dinner. we booked a hotel car for one day tour, and traveled to borobudur and prambanan. the driver was a nice college st

Phoenix Hotel Review”
The Phoenix hotel in Yogyakarta exceeded our expectations. My wife and I spent your honeymoon here for 3 nights and it was completely fantastic in every way. We were in a balcony on the second floor overlooking the gorgeous swimming pool. We just loved it, nothing bad to say at all. The room was cool, comfortable, clean and romantic. The service was exceptional and the breakfast (included in our package) was delicious. We are going back soon as we can, the Phoenix hotel really made our honeymoon memorable.
