Located on the river. Nice staff, free water and free bikes although they are not the best with flat tires. The shared shower was nice and ran hot. Clean facilities. Several restaurants within walking distance.

disappointed by private room with shared bathroom”

I booked a private room expecting a private bathroom (the description doesn't say shared bathroom). I tried to explain but they don't speak any english. The place is located down a slope, not even on the main street. I wouldn't recommend it.

Had a great stay. Our booked room was not available (due to an overstay) so the provided a complimentary upgrade and numerous apologies. Very polite and helpful staff, a good breakfast. Surprisingly clean and well located for the price. Enjoyed the walk along the river.

Small nice hotel with great view near Laos boarder

We stayed here one night before crossing over to Lao to go on slowboat to Luang Prabang. Very friendly and helpful staff. We had room upstairs with river view. The room was clean an comfortable although very small. The balcony with great river view was a big plus. The staff helped us to book river cruise on Shompoo Cruise. (Very good at price USD 140). We recommend this hotel.

      Good for a short stay”

      Clean, Friendly Staff, Great View

Just to sidetrack, the bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong stops at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere so there will be plenty of 'tuk-tuk' drivers try to bring to your hotel. The prices they quoted were reasonable. I only realised I should have walked after the being in the tuk-tuk for less than 5 mins. The hotel is situated near the Police Station which is a plus point for me. From the Police station, it is 2-3mins walk into the hotel. You would have trouble finding it initially (if you're walking). Upon reaching the hotel, there was a lady who helped me with my check-in. Although she didn't understand a single word I said, she quickly called the owner(i think) and passed me the phone. The owner apologised for not being there and told me to settle down after her staff passed me the key. The room looks exactly what you see in the photos. It is spacious to settle down any big bags that you have, a TV, a mini-fridge, air-con, fan and an ensuite toilet. The view was great as my room was facing the Mekong River. The only downside to the view was it was blocked by the trees in front of the room. Other than that, I had a good view during Sunrise in the morning so that is a plus point! There are plenty of local restaurants that serve good Thai food and there's a 7 Eleven that is 5 minutes away from the hotel. It has an ATM machine if you need to draw money. This hotel is good for those who are looking to settle down in a decent and cheap hotel before they embark on a long journey down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang. The only thing is the distance of the hotel to the boat landing where you will take the small boat to cross to Laos. I decided to walk from my hotel to the boat landing and it took me around 20 mins to reach (I even had time to get myself a cup of latte). This might pose as a problem for those who carry trolley bags as the roads are not smooth and you might risk getting your bag damaged.

      clean, nice staff, river view

5 minutes easy walk from where getting off the bus from BKK. About 10mins walk to pier to Laos. the room was nice, clean, good aircon, wifi worked ok (not great though). TV reception was a bit poor and had limited English channels. Good riverview. Every thing seemed fine but after 6pm near by restaurant started playing music till about 11pm. I was hoping to get some good rest, so it kinda bothered me.

clean, nice areas to sit outside,

the hotel sits right above the mekong. it is close walking distance to a good restaurant. it's not too far to walk to center of town either. the rooms were clean and well kept. the basic rooms share several toilets/showers but were clean. the next step up is a nice room with its own bathroom. the staff spoke very good english at the front desk. my plans changed and they were very accommodating to help me switch around some of my nights. good place to stay and base from.

Good Location nearby Mae Khong River

The River House at Chiang Khong is very nice hotel, the owner was very friendly and well prepared for the services. It is located nearby Mae Khong River with the very beautiful scenary. There were cloudy and foggy around the hotel in early morning. Besides, there are many restaurants around the hotel especially thai cuisine with the big and fresh fished from Mae Khong River.

      Good, not great”

      Cleanliness, location

The hotel has a good view of Mekong and Laos, especially if you leave the room and go down to the lane. The room is spartan. I need a desk, and they provided a table when I asked. Tthere was nothing upon which to set my bag for easy access. There is a cabinet which can serve as a small closet, but taking things in and out every time to get into a bag is a pain. The linens on the bed were nice, the bed itself a bit hard. They had bicycles, not particularly good ones, but I learned that they wanted 250 baht per day for rental, which seems outrageous, since you can rent one up in town for 50 baht per day. In the guesthouses in which I have stayed so far, two had decent bikes for free, and one for 50 baht per day. There is no restaurant. They do have hot water and the makings for tea and coffee, plus bananas. My guesthouse in Chiang Saen is half the price, great location, bigger room, bicycles are better AND free. Chiang Khong is more expensive, but not as nice a town. It may cost more because of the "captive audience" effect - those who need to spend a night before crossing over into. This hotel is located about a quarter mile from the red and green bus stops and the morning market. If you are traveling light, head north up the main road then turn right just before the police station, and walk towards the river. Easy enough to find with the signs. Only one person in the place spoke English, and she tended to work afternoon and evenings only. Chiang Khang as a town was a bit dull. I had planned four nights, but left a day early, even though I prepaid. It's not great for food options. The morning market is quite interesting, and some days (like the Friday I left), there is an additional market where the hill tribe people come down with produce and crafts, which I found very interesting.

      Fantastic Mekong View”

      Location, convenient, value

We only stayed two days on our way through to Laos but we found The River House in a very convenient location. We found that the bed was very hard as is normal for thailand but the view from the veranda was worth it. There is a lot of noise that comes from across the river from the Laos side every night but stops around 10 p.m. The staff were very nice and friendly but the breakfast was lacking.

      Good location”

      location, price and staff

We only stayed one night prior to crossing over to Laos. It was a great location for this purpose and close to many places to eat and 7-11. The staff was very friendly and efficient. We had a double fan room and a triple fan room. These rooms were clean and basic, but many cob webs and insects (ants on the bed). It is basically a rustic cabin, so it is easy for the insects to enter the room between the wood slats. Apparently there are rooms with AC and a more solid structure in the front of the building that other guests said were quite nice and no insect problems. I would recommend this place, but get an AC room.

      cleanliness, riverfront location, quiet

The staff were friendly and made us most welcome during our stay. Rooms were very clean and although bathrooms were small it made an ideal stop for us during our travel from Chiang Mai through to Laos. Travelling a s a family of three, it was unfortunate that they could not accommodate an extra bed but then rates were reasonable so two rooms was a good compromise. Breakfast menu limited but of a good standard.

      River view, staff, value

I was only here for a night while passing through Chiang Khong to go to Laos. For the money it was way better than I expected. It's within easy walking distance of restaurants and a really nice scenic area, but it's 10-20 minute walk of the "downtown" (which you may not really care about).

      Comfortable short stay ”

      Clean & comfortable

We arrived in the night time and did not know that the bus stop was within walking distance of the hotel, so ended up paying a tuktuk driver for a 1-2 min ride. The room was clean and comfortable, with large windows. Fan and a/c were working well. Toiletries were provided. Simple breakfast offerings of tea/coffee, bananas. The location on the riverfront was not really close to many food options but it's a small town so everything is pretty much within walking distance. There are also computers available for use at no charge. The hotel also offers a transfer to the Laos border at a lower fee than what the tuktuks are asking.

      Very nice riverside hotel”

Great view, very nice, friendly staff

This is a great place to stay on Chianh Khong. Chances are you're either going to or coming from Laos. I was coming from and this was the first place the driver dropped off, since it's a bit south of the main tourist part of town. It's about a 10 minute walk to that part of town, and also to the main restaurant area. On the other hand, it's closer to the public bus station than the other places, also a 5-10 minute walk. The rooms are very good, modern and clean. Try to get one of the rooms with a view,it's worth it. Be warned though that your balcony is basically part of the shared balcony / eating area; albeit separate by a short fence. The only minor complaint is the karaoke coming from what seemed like across the river in Huay Xai, but that ended by midnight so not a big deal.
