This magnificent hotel is clearly a winning choice with its unique architecture design and outstanding location against the backdrop of the Mingsha Sand Dune. Guests with an appetite for Chinese history will not be disappointed with the hotel's prominent framework that showcase the spirit of Tang Dynasty with large rooftops, ornate furniture, a garden courtyard, and long corridors. Boasting 271 tastefully appointed guestrooms, each unit is decorated simply and furnished with Chinese decor. Guests are minutes away from a myriad of sightseeing attractions such as the Mogao Grottoes, Crescent Moon Lake, Yumenguan and Yangguan Passes, and White Horse Pagoda. Head to Feng Yi Ting restaurant to sample an outstanding selection of Chinese and international cuisine. The rooftop snack bar is another great venue to unwind with a drink while enjoying the fantastic view of Gobi desert.

Well furnished, great service, the only place I would choose to stay at Dun Huang”
A well designed, decorated and furnished hotel with contemporary facilities; staffs were very friendly and helpful; located next to the very famous Cresent Spring; restaurants serviced good quality food with choices and very reasonable prices. It definitely worths for the money.
Most popular hotel in dunhuang ”
This hotel is built to look like a desert castle and the decoration inside also reflects this. It's all designed to make you feel like your living on the Silk Road. The 4th floor has a small restaurant and bar that over looks the sand dunes and you can pre book a breakfast where you raise a camel out into the desert and eat breakfast in the desert. The food in the restaurant was priced ok but better quality is available at other restaurants . We also had a foot massage while sat outside on the sand in a Chinese style courtyard which was professional and not over priced. The hotel was recommended to us by our English speaking guide/driver called Richard( E-mail address email@example.com Tel:+86 13993713080 ) I live in china and can say he is a very fair, patient , knowledge guide/driver, engkish soeaking but local prices, and no annoying shopping stops- unless you want them. If you need to do any day trips or tours, I can highly recommend him.
Peaceful rest away from cities”
Wonderful- view of dunes including from roof top restaurant that serves breakfast Also wonderful view of sunset which is followed by a traditional show Can walk to dunes- 20 min Onsite gift shop- bargain hard!
An excellent choice in Dunhuang”
Silk Road Lodge is located a couple of miles from Dunhang City Centre, just about a mile from the entrance of Crescent Lake Scenic Area. It is designed in the shape of a large sand palace and faces the dunes. Reception is majestic –more so than the welcome provided by the receptionists who took several minutes before taking care of me despite the fact no other guests where checking in at the same time. I stayed in a standard twin-bedded room. Overall it had all the necessary fittings expected from a 4-star hotel. However, everything seemed to have been shrunk in size: each of the twin beds was children-size and very narrow (I almost fell on the floor on the first night!), there was little space to move around, and the bathroom was truly tiny. Despite this, the bedroom felt reasonably comfortable. Internet speed was satisfactory, though Wi-Fi didn’t work properly due to a poor signal, so I needed to resort to the Ethernet cable. Breakfast was served on an outdoor 4th floor terrace facing the dunes. Besides the awesome view, a very decent Western breakfast was offered, with some of the staff speaking English reasonably well and the cooks being able to prepare excellent one-side sunny eggs which for once were neither greasy nor overcooked. A nice surprise and an enchanting way to start the day!
Great location an view”
this is a very nice hotel, the rooms are nice and clean. the service is excellent, they have someone at your service anytime. the location is great and nice desert view from the restaurant at the top. breakfast is good, you get to choose 2 restaurant. the one at the top serves western food, there is another restaurant further away on the ground floor which serves western and chinese breakfast. you can see the sun rise at the top of the restaurant. only issue with the hotel may be security. when i forgot my key and ask the staff to open the door for me, they open it without checking my identity. so that is not very safe.
A very special place to stay”
We were travelling with our 2 adult daughters and we had 2 rooms. The service from the staff was impeccable. There is a calmness in their manner. The rooms are homely, cosy and spacious. We liked that they reflected the culture/history of the area. The roof top restaurant is great at any time of the day, but especially at sunset. The bathroom facilities and provisions were great, with even a foot bath being provided. Would loved to have stayed here longer.
The rooms, while appearing archaic at first, are in reality quite modern and clean. The service was also impeccable; they even provided a free ride to the hospital when one of our family became sick. The amenities provided by the Hotel, such as the Apples, Tea, and Bottled Water were well appreciated. They even gave us stuffed camel plushies (1 per person) as souvenirs. The food was also great, though I would avoid the Chinese restaurant due to personal antipathy towards overpowering flavors. The hotel itself could also be considered as a tourist destination due to its plethora of shows and gorgeous scenery. Overall, it is at a great value for the price.
Very good Hotel on the silk road . However only a few persons could speak english . Very good beds ,clean rooms, acceptable breakfast. Terrace and bar opened until 11 pm ! But very disappointing Spa . Spa rooms not well decorated, massages not exceptional, not even a glass of water after massage. no warm towels either on feet after foot massage . Need to be improved to reach hotel standard.
I have to thank my local agent, Dunhuang Travel Guide, for recommending that I stay in this hotel during my visit. This is an architecturally beautiful hotel built to resemble a fortess. It blends in very well with the surrounding Gobi desert. Very impressive as one turns into the parking area in front of the hotel. You can start to imagine camels walking across. Their customer service is excellent. I arrived from an early train at around 8:45 am. They gave me a room immediately which I really appreciated. They also made accommodations at the time of check out. All staff were courteous and just really understanding and patient. The buffet breakfast is on the 4th floor rooftop with a wonderful view of the desert. The selection is good. The hotel provided complimentary transfer to and from train station and airport. It is also just a 15 minute walk to Mingsha Shan and Crescent Moon Lake. It also offers a shuttle to the night market.
Treat yourself to an incredible accommodation”

They are so in tune to what I wanted. www.DunHuangtravelguide.com. I just wished I had time to do their camel trekking and/or overnight desert camping. It sounded fantastic! If I ever come back, I will do that and stay in this hotel again.
The room, view, service, location , stuff , everything was so nice. We had such a lovely time there. Only once thing they can make it better is maybe their breakfast. Other Chinese hotels have served more fresh and tasty variety. But still we enjoyed it with great view of desert.
I would strongly recommend the Dunhuang Silk Road Hotel to anyone staying in Dunhuang. The staff are helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. The food and other services are good and the location is exceptional.
Beautiful rooms, cleaned twice a day! Helpful staff. Good breakfast. You can enjoy a drink on the roof terrace with view of the dunes. Very good location, you can walk (20 minutes) to the dunes or even better ride one of the hotel pushbikes.
Amazing hotel with stunning view”
We were a group of three friends traveling low budget in Gansu, and we booked this hotel as a one-night-luxury- treatment for ourselves before and after riding long distances Chinese trains. The place is amazing, very close to the train station and airport, and to Dunhuang city, but even closer to Mingsha Shan sand dunes. Rooms are large and clean, very comfortable; staff is friendly and helpful, even though they barely speak English. We asked for a driver and he was a lovely local guy, he showed us around all day and bring us to eat la mian for a very fair price. The buffet breakfast is quite impressive, speaking about China, and the plus is that you eat on the terrace, in front of Mingsha Shan. I really couldn't ask more to this place, great value and highly recommended.
Excellent Hotel; made the journey worthwhile”
Excellent; wish I could have stayed more than one night. Room is large, comfortable, nicely decorated. The entire complex well laid out. Sunrise (or set) on a roof top patio. Close to sand dunes and Crescent Lake Oasis. With Agoda rate I got excellent value for money spent.
We had a great stay in the hotel. The room is clean and the room size is good. It is within walking distance to Ming Sha Shan which is a main tourist spot. Breakfast is good, especially the handmade noodles. I am most impressed by the rooftop restaurant with excellent scenic view of Ming Sha Shan both in the morning and during sunset. It is an excellent place for stargazing as well.
Excellent hotel with a great location”
My three brothers and I stayed at this hotel on a Silk Road holiday we did independently. Of all the hotels we stayed at in China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan this was the best. The facilities and amenities are excellent and leave nothing to be desired. The staff are friendly and obliging (not something one can always expect in China), the food is good, but the great feature of the property is its location a short distance from the magnificent sand dunes. These are less than one kilometer from the hotel. As you climb to the balcony for breakfast or dinner these magnificent dunes greet your view. We hired bicycles to ride the short distance to the dunes and the slightly longer trip into the city proper. The town is a cheap taxi ride ($1-$2) away. Energetic persons could also ride to the famous Buddhist grottoes some distance away. The hotel should not be confused with another named Silk Road Hotel in the city proper, to which we were first taken.
Spectacular location at the sand dunes”
Professional, english speaking personnel at front desk; Hotel rooms clean and cozy; Personnel friendly and supporting; Service in the roof top coffee shop needs to be improved and breakfast hour needs to be extended (10:30 instead of 9:30; we arrived at 9:20 and buffet had already been closed, partly); Chinese restaurant in adjacent building very good with friendly and professional service; 4 star rating of hotel is ok; My wife and myself, we do highly recommend this hotel.
Good location good architecture good service”
stunning architecture. traditional yet stylish. i feel like an ancient chinese worrier living in the castle planning for my next battle. perfect service, reasonably expected for the high price. located right next to the tourist attraction within walking distant. would be better if the hotel provide free shuttle service upon request to and fro the tourist attraction.
Romatice setting in the "middle" of the desert. ”
Having breakfast of the terrace with the desert mountains in the background is amazing. Rooms feel(in a positive way) like being back a hundred years. Rooms are clean and well equipped. As everyone usually rents a taxi there for the whole because of the distants between the sightseens, it doenst matter that the hotel is on the border between city and desert. Otherwise 30 min walking to the city centre.
