The breakfast is very good, with excellent home-made jams and marmalade to accompany the traditional bacon and eggs.

This English Tudor, boutique hotel, built in 1939, is situated adjacent to a beautiful golf course. Guests will enjoy a prime location on a verdant hill that is just three hours from Kuala Lumpur and nestled upon the frontier that separates modernity from the untamed wild. Guests will find The Smokehouse Hotel perfectly situated to explore both. This boutique hotel features a special traditional English breakfast followed by a noon tea in the sculpted garden. The hotel also boldly offers one of the finest dining venues in the Highlands, featuring a distinctive collage of traditional and modern cuisine types. Beautiful English cottage”
We visited Cameron Highlands in May this year. Smokehouse is about a 20mins walk from Brinchang. Its a basically a Tudor style cottage with a garden. The building itself looks like it just got a paint job not to long ago, the roof is aged with lichen growing on it. The garden is really pretty, decorated with plants, herbs and flowers for your photo-taking delight. The rooms and interiors are furnished with all sorts of old fittings and pictures to give the homely feeling. You probably think that you are in England. Breakfast was included with the room. Do note that it is not a buffet breakfast, you get to choose either a light breakfast or a traditional breakfast. It doesnt matter, because the traditional breakfast is already way too sumptuous. You get juice, a muffin/croissant, bread, eggs (scrambled, poached etc) bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, mushrooms, baked beans .. Awesome! The place is not without its downsides. The water pressure for bathing comes and goes, so you have to turn it up really high. There's no air conditioning, you sleep in the natural cool of the highlands. There were a few mozzies when we were there, but we simply covered our heads with the blanket. Some rooms may be facing the main road, so you may want to ask for a room that does not get disturbed by the traffic. In a nutshell, Smokehouse is a beautiful place but don't expect it to be perfect. My girl and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The place, the service, the food - it was first class! We will definitely stay here again.
A Delightful English Hotel/Restaurant, in a Magical Garden, in Malaysia!”
Enjoy the pleasures of the English countryside without flying to England - stay at The Smokehouse Hotel in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands! Outstanding service in the Bar and Restaurant, top-quality Reception staff and management, great English food, and a central location for exploring the Highlands.
The hotel sign says "Ye Olde Smokehouse' hotel. "Ye Olde'... probably tells you more about what to expect inside i.e. dark beams, comfy chairs and lowish ceilings. There's even an English style bar with an open fireplace which was lit during our stay as it gets cold at night. Upon arrival, you will be sat down and welcomed with a pot of tea. We also enjoyed a delicious dinner here and really liked the (English?) custom of sitting in the bar with a drink prior to dinner and being shown your table when the meal is actually ready to serve. Then, as we were leaving early on our last day (and couldn't have our paid for breakfast), the staff arranged a little takeaway picnic of sandwiches, fruit, water bottles and shortbread biscuits. This was very much appreciated. The hotel is a fair walking distance from the main shops at Tanah Rata. However, it is well located just off the main road and taxis into and out of the town are not expensive.
Quaint and Lovely Hotel, Olde England in Malaysia”
i really enjoyed my stay at the smokehouse hotel. i chose it especially for its old world ambience. the special rate was also an attraction. i hope to be back again some day and have already recommended it to my son and daugher-in-law when they next visit penang. his attentive staff were very welcoming. it was obviously a 'quiet' time for guests, as i found myself dining alone. it also rained late two afternoons running, but that's why everything is so green and lush i suppose. unfortunately, my early morning departure to board a bus for penang necessitated some staff being available at that time, for breakfast and to settle final monies. i experienced a little bit of trouble there when none of my credit cards could be used, due to the line not working properly, and necessitating my having to deplete my local currency somewhat. but this can happen anywhere, anytime. i have bought several postcards of the hotel and the cameron highlands and will certainly recommend it to all my friends!!
Nice hotel with beautiful gardens”
We stayed at Smokehouse Hotel for just one night and really liked this hotel. Wish we would have had at least one more night there to be able to do a hike at the tea plantations and see more of the small town of Tanah Rata. It's right next to the golf course and centrally located within town. The staff is super-friendly, polite and helpful - an extraordinary level of customer service I must say that you don't see often in "boutique hotels" of this kind. ;-) We ate dinner here, too and liked the traditional British roast and Yorkshire pudding etc. The bed was a bit narrow for our liking, though and the room was also quite small, yet beautifully furnished. Note: There is not much protection from the "noise" other guests are making upon late arrival. We were tired from a long travel day and went to bed early, so it was a bit of a nuisance later when others returned to their rooms chatting and laughing. Otherwise a lovely hotel...and these flowers in the gardens, just gorgeous!
A Unique hotel like no other ”
My partner and I stayed 2 nights at The Smokehouse Hotel while on the way back to Singapore from Thailand by motorbike. Having been on the road for a long time, we really wanted a comfortable and quiet place to have a good rest. When we finally reached at midnight, we were welcomed by a friendly staff, and he settled our room arrangements very quickly. We walked in thru the "living room" area and we found the furniture to be those like old antique english styled ones. it was beautiful! the deluxe room we stayed in was a lil small, we expected it to be a tad bigger but it was ok. room was dimly lit, kinda romantic :) the toilet was alright, not fantastic, didn't look new but it was clean and well maintained. water heater worked just fine, but the shower area (which is inside the bathtub) is a little too small. Food was really nice IMO, even though we could only choose from 2 types of breakfast menus, but it was gd enough. dining area was spacious n lovely with a gd view. I really LOVED the scones, eggs, home-made jam, freshly baked croissants and toasted bread, everything haha! Take some time to eat out at the garden under the cool weather, try their tea menu sets. You'll love it! couldn't get a good look of the hotel when we first arrived since it was so dark, but we got a lovely surprise when we woke up the next morning. looked out the window of our room and it was a wonderful sight, a lovely garden with pretty garden chairs and tables. Honestly, i think that the pictures on this site doesn't do the hotel justice because the place is insanely beautiful. during our stay there, we noticed that during the day there will be visitors from other hotels taking pics of the place, it's like a small tourist attraction on it's own. we even encountered a couple taking their wedding photos there on our last day. :) The smokehouse is located abt 2km away from Brinchang, and the other tourist attractions, which was perfect!
Quaint, charm, character - NOT mod cons”
We stayed here 20 years ago shortly after our marriage and came back this weekend as a 20th wedding anniversary celebration. It has not changed at all - which is good, since the rest of the Cameron Highlands has completely transformed (and not for the better). The SmokeHouse is iconic. The windows don't shut properly, the rugs are tatty, the whole place reeks of "olde world" charm... instead of a turndown service we got a mosquito spray and some pellets for the mossie guards.... You have to enjoy this kind of thing to enjoy the Smokehouse. We do; and we did. Had a lovely stay. We had PORK bacon and PORK sausages for breakfast (in Malaysia no less!); we had a decent roast dinner in the evening. As expats this is just wonderful. Just don't expect air conditioning or a gym, it's not that kind of place.
Lovely hotel with a beautiful garden”
Booked this hotel for a night stay but decided to stay 2 nights instead when we were there. The staff are kind enough to make arrangements to let us have the same room for 2 nights instead of making us moving around on the 2nd night due last min request and the hotel is almost fully book cause it's weekend. The rooms are clean with a good view of the garden outside. The hotel is well located, just a short drive to both Tanah Rata and Brinchang. We particularly enjoy the beautiful garden of the smokehouse where we spend the afternoon having tea in. The staff are very helpful in making sure that we have a good stay and even before we leave they packed some fruits n sandwich for our drive down to KL. Its a really nice gesture.
I must say after reading some of the "bad" reviews, I was a bit concerned when I booked the hotel. All I can say is that my experience was one of the BEST hotel stays I have ever experienced. The staff were friendly and accommodating, the food (breakfast and Tea) was really good though a bit expensive if for walk-in patrons, it was very peaceful and quiet (which was what we were looking for), the hotel decor itself is very Victorian and was a great change from the new modern and more impersonal hotels, though the rooms ahd all the necessary modern ammenities (hot water, satellite TV, WiFi(very slow)etc.), and the gardens were beautiful and a great place to relax. The hotel was close enough to Brinchang and Tanah Rata to drive within 5 mins should you need to get anything. In all it was a great experience and I would give my overall rating a 9/10. One last thing, when we checked out, they packed us complimentary sandwiches and fruits for our journey back. Really nice touch and very much appreciated. Well Done to the staff of The Old Smokehouse Hotel. I would definitely make a return visit!!! :)
Lovely Hotel and service with smile”
This was only the second me and my husband visited Cameron Highland and I have booked The Smokehouse mainly because of the environment. Before staying in, I have read a lot of bad comments regarding the hotel which worrying me. However, the thing is not as worse as commented and its even out of my expectation. We were being upgraded to a suit just next to the restaurant and even so we don't really feel any noise from the road side at night. One of the best thing that was the staff who served us during check-in time and also during our dinner time. The staff name George. He is very friendly and even my 16 months old daughter likes him a lot!The stay is a pleasent stay and me and my husband will definitely come back in the future!
Ye Olde Smokehouse ”
Best hotel I've been to in malaysia so far. Only stayed 2 nights there but enough to be impressed. Lovely garden to have a walk in, clean room, pleasant dining experience and friendly staff. Charming place which makes you feel like home. Staff makes effort to know me by name and even remember my usually order of one tea and one coffee for breakfast. The only hotel to ever packed me and my wife some lunch on their own accord for our trip down from cameron highlands. We were sad to leave but look forward to coming back again and visit our friends from the Smokehouse.
Excellent service, atmosphere and food.”
Perfect for its setting, the Smokehouse personifies what coming to the cool Cameron Highlands is all about - relaxing by a warm fire in rustic surrounds before enjoying delicious, authentic English-style meals. Some facilities in the room showed the effects of age and could use maintenance/ rejuvenation. Otherwise, the accommodation was excellent in rustic style, with in-room satellite TV an unexpected surprise. All staff were extremely helpful and attentive throughout the stay and the restaurant offered a choice and quality of meals that made it challenging for us to go elsewhere for dinner - which we didn't.
Perfect weekend getaway”
The Smokehouse Hotel Cameron Highland is a great getaway from the recent heat in Kuala Lumpur. The garden is so beautiful, the weather is so cooling and the staff are so friendly, you just can't have had enough of this place. Moreover, eating breakfast in The Smokehouse makes me feel like I am in another country out of Malaysia.
Check In to A Forgotten Past at the Smokehouse.”
Everything about the Smokehouse - Her warm lobby, rooms and staff, transports you back to the good old days. The staff are exceptional in their service. You can Enjoy tea service in their well manicured gardens or have drinks by the fireplace at their Tavern.... I found it very relaxing and a nice change from normal hotels. The rooms are jaded but well functioning which adds to its charm. I am making this my go to place at Cameron Highlands for my future visits.
The Smokehouse Hotel By The Golf Course”
Sixty kilometres of loops, switchbacks and steady climbing takes you to this delightful resort. Here you will find the most famous building in Cameron Highlands. Standing alongside the golf course is The Smokehouse Hotel and Restaurant. This English Tudor style Hotel built in 1939 provides you with the ultimate in colonial ambience. A 3 hour drive from KL, Cameron Highlands is quite literally at the frontier between the man made world and the wild where one can venture out and taste the latter, returning safely each day to the comfort of the former, The Smokehouse.
Like Staying at Your Auntie's”
We had been warned that The Smokehouse was expensive: this was not true, unless compared with other hotels. But other hotels have nothing on this trip down an British Memory Lane. From the outside, the well-maintained gardens and ivy-clad walls create an intimate cottage feel. This extends into the hotel interior, a horse-brassed and Windsor chair-filled fantasy reminiscent of trips to see older rellies who went on about the price of eggs during the War and the shameful loss of Empire. The rug-strewn, darkened corridors lead to clean, spacious rooms with modern bathrooms. The views through the latticed casement windows onto the garden and the golf course beyond did question the belief we were in Pahang and not Surrey! The traditional British food was reasonably-well presented and, for good or ill, would not have been out of place elsewhere in the English-speaking world. The waiters and service staff were extremely attentive and pleasant. The old time bar, with an truly excellent resident barman, would not have been out of place in a 1970s pub. The comfy sofas around the central open fireplace made one forget time, appointments and anything beyond the world of the 1930s. If I had to criticize, I would suggest they find another background CD that did not include wartime British hits from Gracie Fields, George Formby and Vera Lynne -they somewhat grated on the 300th time of listening. Hotel development in this region seems to be the inn thing, but ignore all the others. If there's one hotel to stay at in the Cameron Highlands, it's this one.
A truly exceptional property that really must be experienced. If it weren't for The Smokehouse Hotel I really would have been very disappointed with my stay in the now over-developed Cameron Highlands. The restaurant served up probably the best Western fare I've ever had; and I'm from Canada!
Little England in Cameron”
when we arrived, we were greeted by the staff who were full of smiles and very polite. upon check-in, we were upgraded to the honeymoon suite (squire suite). the room was awesome and just felt like i had gone back home to my grandmother's home. the bed was huge, the room bright and airy, the furniture authentic, the bathroom was huge and lavish... we felt so at home and could have stayed in the room for the duration of our stay if we had wanted to. we had been asked about whether we wanted to have dinner in the hotel on our arrival, and decided to eat in the hotel restaurant on our second evening, preferring to visit the local markets on the first night. the menu was very english and the food was excellent, as was the wine choice and taste. i can definitely recommend the duck paté starter and beef wellington entreé. after dinner we retired to the bar in front of the open fire, finishing our wine in warmth. breakfast was inclusive and was a proper english style cooked breakfast with proper sausages, bacon, toast, oat porridge... mmmmm.... all in all, we are so happy we chose the olde smokehouse as our hotel for our weekend in cameron. we will return...
1 night stay is not enough for such a homely place”
We only stayed one night out of our 3nights at cameron highlands. We was warmly welcome down from out cab to the homely warm check in area, lobby & waiting area. Upon arrival, they are well prepared to even receive you. Check in was quick and friendly by the staff. They send me and guided me up all the way to my room. It was a v friendly gesture. Rooms, we are amaze by hos homely our room for the night will be. Theres living room, bedroom and huge toilets. All of it are connected. It v vintage and pretty. alil oldness in the rooms makes the room w more homely feel. Went to the bar to grab alil bit of drinks. Wine by the fire in the cold is one the best moements in life. Nothing beats this feeling ever. Services, my room's tv channel went misses due to reception. I informed them and attend to this matter quickly. It was fixed quickly aft i had a drink at fhe bar. All off the staff are v friendly. I req for a cab service and they quickly attended to it. The cab came in less than 8 mins time. Its definitely worth the price for such a warm and pretty stay in cameron. Although location is really alil out of the way and ulu but its fine. Its worth the hassle to discover this peaceful beauty in cameron. 1 night is really not enough for us. My cousin love it too! Oh ya! Breakfast is ma ma mia!
Arriving at the hotel immediately makes you feel like you've stepped into a little piece of England in Cameron Highlands. We were served with a welcome drink of coffee or tea while we checked-in. Stayed in the deluxe room which was spacious with nice decor, water heater worked just fine, relaxing, quiet and comfy. Everything was perfect except, there is only one window which opens to the walkway and you need this window opened since there is no fan or air conditioning in the room and that lacks privacy but security was ok. Also one of the movie channels was not working and being a movie buff this was just quite disappointing. The English breakfast was good! Really miss the pastries with homemade jam and the coffee. Dinner was good but a little on the pricey side. Stomach wasn't feeling so well that night so thought I'd had something plain like poached salmon. Tasty and delicious except the fish was not deboned so instead of enjoying the meal, I was just focused on picking out the bones and trying not to miss and swallow which kinda spoilt it for me. The staff were helpful and friendly, especially the manager an Indian gentleman who made us feel warm and welcomed. There is an actual fireplace at the bar and having a drink next to the fireplace on a cold breezy night really is a memorable experience, especially when you hail from the hot city in Malaysia. The housekeeping staff did a remarkable job in ensuring our room was clean, they even kindly waited on us. The hotel also packed some sandwiches and fruits for us for our journey when we checked out, very thoughtful! Overall, wonderful experience would recommend it to anyone who wants to relax, unwind and escape the hustling bustling city lifestyle. Would definitely return again.
