Quiet oasis
It is good to come back to a quiet oasis after a day in the chaos of Kathmandu or Patan. A bit further from the main attractions. Great views from the rooftop.

Lack of Elecricity and Hot Water
Breakfast and Price
This was my second time to stay at the Yellow House, however the previous trip was in September 2015 and I hadn't noticed the electricity cuts as much as it was a warmer time of year. On this trip the electricity was only running approximately 7 hours per day. The hotel only turns its generator on at 6pm in the evening and turns it off at around 2-3am in the morning. I assume this is to save fuel during the fuel crisis. As a result the hotel can be quite cold at night and there is rarely if ever hot water for a shower in the morning or at any other time. In addition it is impossible to work from the hotel on the weekends due to the power cuts and the fact that management have decided not to turn on the generator during the daylight hours. This can be frustrating if your primary reason for being in Nepal is to work. That aside the usual Yellow House offerings were still up to scratch such as the room cleanliness, politeness of staff and the breakfast. It is a pity that the fuel crisis is having such an impact on a small business like the Yellow House, but the lack of power would influence my decision to stay here again unless the management use their generator more strategically, i.e. ensure there is power in the morning so that guests have hot water.

The House is Yellow
quiet, space, comfort
I really enjoyed staying in the Yellow House. The friendly staff, the quiet site (stray dogs fighting can happen anywhere in Kathmandu), the spacious rooms, the well equipped bathroom, Wifi of which the performance is acceptable, even though it does not come close to what I am used to all add up to a very enjoyable experience. Only slight disadvantage is its location: you need a cab to get anywhere (but with the price of a cab-ride in Kathmandu that is not much of a bother).

Lovely hotel with friendly and helpful staff
Staff, food, cleanliness
We loved our stay at the Yellow House. We have an 8 month old son and wanted clean rooms and a good location. We got exactly what we were looking for with this hotel. The staff were so helpful and friendly and we were so close to some really nice cafes and restaurants. You are also only a 20 minute ride from the airport, but are in a quiet and set back location. Loved the peace and quiet. Would definitely stay again!

OK, but not the best choice
Not too expensive
We chose The Yellow House due to its proximity to our friends in Sanepa. It is fine if you are desperate to stay in the Sanepa area, although I would probably recommend the Summit Hotel more or Summerhill House up the road in Jawalakhel. This place is a little out of the way from the usual tourist spots and generally lacks character. The main block of rooms are located in a yellow concrete block, not the picturesque 'Yellow House' we had envisaged. The was nothing particularity wrong with the place (apart from the excessive use of airfresher and patch internet - but this is KTM!) but there are certainly more atmospheric places that would make for a more memorable stay.

clean rooms, great service, delicious breakfast
great breakfast, friendly staff, clean rooms
Despite the hard beds, I would still stay here again and recommend this place. Staff are so nice, place is clean and shower had plenty of hot water. After staying in thamal when I initially arrived in Kathmandu, I was eager to stay in a quieter area of town after I returned from Pokhara. The hotel is difficult for cab drivers to find. Once we were taken to the yellow house in Thamel and another two times the cab drivers were confused on where to go despite being given the address and shown a map (the cab driver ended up calling the hotel to get us there). On the second day, we had one of the staff write directions in Nepali on how to get to the hotel and we had no further issues getting back to the hotel. The rooms are beautifully decorated, very clean and the hotel has hot water 24 hours a day even during power cuts. Breakfast was included and was great, lots of choices and high quality. I often had tea, croissants and fresh fruit and my husband would have crepes and coffee. Staff goes out of their way to help you and are all so pleasant. The place was a good value for the money. The one downside was that the beds were the hardest beds we slept on during our 2 weeks in Nepal. I felt like I was sleeping on a board. There were some comforters in the closet and I laid those down under the sheets to get a slightly more comfortable nights sleep.
