In and around Tianhe District

More about Tianhe District

Tianhe District has played a central role in the development of Guangzhou. It was founded in the 1980s and grew up out of a collage of residential suburbs and rice fields. Today, it’s known for skyscrapers like CITIC Plaza and the Pearl River Tower, with most of the high-rise development located west of central Tianhe District.

In the decades since its founding, Tianhe quickly became the new center of Guangzhou, and accommodation in Tianhe District includes some of the city’s finest hotels. Historic architecture is found in other districts, while Tianhe has given itself over to pure commercialism. Two of the local highlights are Teem Plaza and Grandview Shopping Mall. The latter is the biggest of its kind of Asia, and both are staples for shoppers from Hong Kong.

Transportation through Tianhe is straightforward. The district is relatively compact, and it’s possible to get around on foot locally. Tianhe Park, for example, is a popular place to visit in the morning and evening, and it’s immediately next door to several hotels in Tianhe District. But for connecting to other districts, there’s no substitute for the metro. Line five connects Liwan to Huangpu and passes through several Tianhe stations along the way.
