I had booked the least expensive room, they gave me a private villa with private pool, beautiful rooms with view of the jungle and river.

Perfect location, service, place, food and staff”

Place and hotel design is the best.

I enjoyed my Ubud stay mainly because of the hotel. We spent half day taking photos of the whole place. Ambience is relaxing. It's cool to wake up every morning hearing the sound of nature. Room rate we got is affordable. We booked for a non-airconditioned room but got a room with AC. Staff are hospitable and helpful. They always greet you with a smile and a simple hello. I was also surprised with the welcome drink (wine mixed with juice). :) The room we got is big, without tv (not necessary so it's ok), with tub, perfect mirror for a woman like me who's always checking oneself at the mirror. Inside room is already relaxing as it's made of wood. There is just one thing I was not comfortable - there is no bidet in the toilet so we have to use shower every time we need to wash our ass after poop. The surrounding is magnificent. I just love nature and this hotel has offered me one. Spa place is too good though spa rates are bit expensive so I just found a cheaper one outside the hotel. There are two pools we saw and are located in a jungle type spot. Though there are no nearby beach, we can enjoy swimming and relaxing in this place. If I'll be going to Bali again, I'll choose UBUD and I'll definitely go back to Tjampuhan Hotel!!!! :)

stunning hotel amazing grounds great location”

the spa caves riverside massage pools gardens

We stayed 4 nights at hotel Tjampuhan. The view on arrival took our breath away and continued to do so during our stay. The grounds are stunning, built on the side of the hill lots of stairs but we were happy with the exercise. The spa has to be seen to be believed carved caves with hot and cold spa plus sauna and steam room. we had riverside massages and bali flower baths all outdoors next to the beautiful river. Two pools were also so clean and beautiful surroundings. We had 2 raja rooms next to each other so had lots of privacy. Huge balconies to sit and enjoy the zen views. Our rooms were airconditioned and cleaned daily. big comfy beds. We walked into Ubud which took about 5 mins but there is a shuttle on the hour every hour until 9pm. A taxi to town costs $4 We ate at Laughing buddha in town, great thai food and service and music. Also Wayans cafe directly across the road had awesome individual outdoor balconies where you sit on the floor and relax on cushions for super leisurely dinner. We visited Pita Maha and Royal Pita Maha as well the other two hotels owned in ubud also on the stunning river....we would happily stay at any of them on our return although for us the grounds of the Tjampuhan were amazing. They have free internet available on two computers just below reception. The omelettes at breakfast were great....One lady had been staying there a month and i can see why its a beautiful place......

    Peaceful with a personal touch”

Accomodating shuttle times, all rooms overlook rice terraces, delicious and large portion size breakfast

My stay with Tjampuhan Hotel and Spa started was terrific! Right from the convenient airport pick up, to dropping me off at my next location (complimentary). Although the hotel is 5-6 minute drive from the center of Ubud, the hotel shuttle is at your convenience anytime. The hotel only has 10 rooms, so there is a very nice personal touch to the service from staff. Room and bathroom are both quite large. The bathtub just needs an attachment to make a freestanding shower. All rooms overlook a small rice field, with fireflies dancing around at night. Local neighbourhood nearby with roosters that can wake you up. This was not a huge problem though, because you want to get up early and enjoy all that Ubud has to offer. Highly recommend hotel and seeing Ubud area.

My review of Tjampuhan Hotel Bali”

The ambience, architecture, cool weather and service
Bathroom looks a bit tired and mozzies

I had my reservations when I reserved this hotel. There were plenty of very good and very bad comments about this hotel. But I sticked to my guns and I am glad that I did. I always wanted to stay in a truly Balinese villa and not one of those ultra modern hotels. Tjampuhan is one of the oldest and shows true Balinese architecture in its entirety. The ambience is just great. Waterfall sounds from your villa; extra cool air from the jungle surrounding your villa and great service from the hotel staff. It was worth every penny! Location is also great; it is along the main Ubud road which means you can go on a nice walk to the shops in Ubud. The cons is the bathroom which looks a bit tired but nevertheless clean. And ahh, the mozzies. The hotel staff did maade an effort to put mosquito coils inside the villa in the evening but those mozzies were quite determined to make their presence felt! Well, you cant have both nature and comfort.. Bring some repellant with you if you are staying in the Agung's room. No you dont need aircon. Seriously. Breakfast was quite good. What else? Yes, the old saying again... You havent been to bali if you have not stayed in Tjampuhan. I really enjoyed my stay here (and my wife). Thanks to the staff! You did an incredible job. Keep smiling!!!!

    Traditional hotel in beautiful location”

The natural environment built into the side of a hill, the Indonesian traditional architecture, the beauty of the area

The room was simple with no safe, air con or tea/coffee making facilities but, it was very comfortable in mid August. I'm not sure how comfortable it would be in the hot months. But the best thing about the hotel was the natural beauty surrounding the hotel. The lobby is on the level of the main road then the rooms are built down the hill to the river valley below. There were rock carvings throughout the hotel environment. It was beautiful. Given its location on a hillside, there were lots of steps so it would not suit those who can't do steps. It's quiet with only the sound of the river and local wildlife at night. And, it's far enough away from the main, touristy area. Ubud has changed a lot over the years so Monkey Forest Rd is now busy, touristy and rather ugly. The hotel is about a 20min walk away from the centre of town. It's worth the walk. I would definitely stay at the Tjampuhan Hotel and Spa again.

Exceptional Hotel to stay in Ubud”

Beauty of the location and the grounds. Large Comfortable Room. Friendly Staff. Handy to Ubud

My wife and I realy enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Tjampuhan Hotel and Spa. We loved the location of the hotel on the the side of the ridge running down towards the small river, very lush with tropical plants and palms. We found the pool area a lovely place to chill out after a days exploring around the Ubud area. We had a room near the top of the complex and enjoyed the view out over the small valley. Our room was large comfortalble and clean. The bathroom was a little dated but that didn't worry us. The location of the hotel to Ubud is nice and close, we walked and rode a scooter into town, no problem. All the hotel staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. We would definately stay again!!

    Beautiful hotel and excellent service”

Close to Ubud but you feel like you're in the middle of a jungle

Our 3 nights at the Tjampuhan were wonderful. The rooms are nice, but nothing fancy, however the real highlight is walking around the hotel grounds. The Tjampuhan does a great job keeping it's property clean and green. The free breakfast was nice as were both pool areas. The spa services were affordable and it was a nice touch to have your massage outside next to a river. Service was excellent and they wanted to ensure you were having a great time as their guest. Bali as a whole is an amazing place, but this hotel made our trip extra special.

When we alight at the entrance we can not see the hotel till we checked in then we realised the lobby is on the hill top and we have to walk quite a distance with steps all the way to the lower level. We fell in love with the night surrounding ambiance, the air is so fresh and cooling. I do not recommand this hotel for the elderly and kids under seven to stay cause has to walk up & down the steps esp night time the light is not sufficient to glow on the steps. I also felt bad about having the staffs to carry our heavy laugages by walking all those steps down the hill when checked in and up the hill during checked out. Night time we felt abit boaring after 9pm when we returned to the hotel esp our 14 year old son has no tv to watch and not used to sleeping so early. I must say this hotel suits honey moon couple, or couples but not teenages. The location of this hotel is good with only 10mins walk to the market where you can do shopping, have food there. Also there is one thing that I dont see anyone mentioned is, it is also quite near the monkey forest attraction, I only noticed it when we took a taxi in our last day to browse around the place and had our lunch at a duck restaurant and come to realise actually the street to monky forest attraction area is at the junction of the market place. The area near monkey forest is more crowded at night that we have missed, if we would have gone there we will not be home so early and my son may not feel board after late night and all the walking, he will just jump into the bed and sleep. The breakfast in the hotel is simple and just nice for someone who does not take heavy breakfast. The spa is the best feature of the hotel, we took the spa package BUT please dont do it on the raining day. We took the spa just before the rain started falling and we were all freezed to death with our naked body laying on the bed with only a cloth over body just to wait half

    Magic setting with wonderful staff”

Relaxing gardens and surrounds with wonderful natural spring pool

As in the past I found my stay in Tjampuhan Hotel and Spa an extremely relaxing experience. Our rooms was close to the river which provided relaxing background sounds and met it was cool at night. The Spa is an amazing experience because of the staff and the inspiring natural surroundings. I would recommend this hotel to everyone being the ultimate relaxing Bali experience.

Classic Balinese style at an affordable price”

The much-imitated original royal Balinese style, full of greenery, deep shady thatched roofs and a mass of stone carving, is only looking slightly tired today. The pool is a quiet refuge surrounded by birdsong and greenery, and the rooms are spacious with a good view.
Many steep steps make it inappropriate for the elderly, disabled or people who are sore from climbing Gunung Agong. The included breakfast is very basic.

Hotel Tjampuhan has been a mainstay of the Ubud hospitality scene since the royal family of Ubud offered the site to German artist Walter Spies. Its charming location on a steep river valley, looking across to ridges of green grass for thatching and a tangle of trees, continues to be appealing to this day. The hotel offers two room rates -- the slightly more expensive rooms are on the upper story of detached chalets, giving a better view across the river valley and more privacy on the large balconies. The rooms are large and comfortable, although the beds are a little short for tall people, there aren't many electrical outlets, and the bathrooms are looking a little tired. But the beautiful thatched roofs, the little added touches of fresh hibiscus scattered around, and the deep calm atmosphere make up for all that. Plus the price is right! The same hotel chain has opened Pita Maha Resort and the Royal Pita Maha at eye-popping prices -- enjoy the same style at Hotel Tjampuhan, if not, perhaps, the same luxury.

Traditional Bali hotel in beautiful location”

Traditional bali style hotel , set in beautiful gardens with amazing views down ino the valley. The staffwere very friendly and efficient and the rooms spacious and comfortable,

Ubud is a very different place to stay, with a cooler climate and less humidity. It is also much less busy than around the beaches, which are some of the reasons why we enjoyed our stay at the lovely Tjampuhan Hotel. The shuttle bus service into the centre of Ubud is most convenient and runs until well into the evening. There is a plethora of excellent cheap restaurants within walking distance. One feature to be aware of for older visitors, is the prevalence of steep stone steps, unavoidable on such a beautiful, but steep site. We loved our visit, especially sitting on our porch watching the birds and viewing the magnificent scenery.

    Bali holiday March 2009”

Well located, close to Ubud centre with regular free shuttle bus to city centre and monkey forest. very helpful courteous staff, quiet, peaceful and beautiful environment. this is a hotel you want to return to. and we have!
located on the side of a ravine and therefore terraced. while this is part of the appeal it is not for the unfit or disabled. many steps!

Tjampuhan is a charming colonial era hotel with enormous character and style. while the rooms appear to some a little basic, they are spacious and comfortable and reflect the style of a byegone time. comfortable private verandahs provide sweeping vistas of exquisitely maintained mature terraced gardens with cascading well stocked lilly ponds. the spa would have to be set in one of the most stunningly scenic locations in Bali. the open air terrace restaurant combines captivating architecture with an excellent breakfast served by attentive and delightful staff.

    Enjoy the Best of UBUD”

I booked the Tjampuhan hotel but they moved/upgraded me to their sister hotel nearby, the Peta Maha. I had booked the least expensive room, they gave me a private villa with private pool, beautiful rooms with view of the jungle and river. Everyone was very kind, all the hotels and shops are doing their best to hold on. If you are in Bali, now is a chance to experience some wonderful hotels at never seen prices. If you can, please enjoy and support the economy.

A quiet getaway that's still close to everything”

    Location, room size and staff

I picked the hotel because a friend had recommended trying to stay along the river, out of the way of the chaos of central Ubud. At the Tjampuhan, you feel as if you're far away from everything, even though it's a short walk to the restaurants and shops. I could hear nothing but bugs and the river from my room at night. Green everywhere, and the setup of the villas makes you feel like you're in a little mountain retreat. The staff is extremely friendly and kind. The pools are lovely, and the little cave-like spa is a fun retreat from everything. Breakfast was basic but yummy.

    Stunning Beautiful Hotel”

Stunning hotel, immaculate grounds and exquisite stone carvings
No kettle, coffee, tea etc were supplied, room service didn't commence until 7am. Lots and lots of stairs.

min. 50 words Hotel Tjampuhan was an absolutely stunning hotel with exquisite stone carvings and the grounds were immaculate. The hotel provided a free shuttle bus to three locations in Ubud and the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. The ONLY downfalls of the hotel were no tea making facilities in the room (we asked for a kettle but were given no cups or coffee etc). There were also a lot of stairs. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for anyone who has trouble walking. When my young son fell asleep in the restaurant, a porter carried him to our room. Our rooms were huge and so gorgeous with an equally huge verandah that looked over the pool and ravine. I loved this hotel so much and would highly recommend it to anyone.

    A true Balinese experience”

The setting is very soothing and relaxing with lush greenery everywhere. At night, the quietness with the natural sounds of nature is a plus for sleep. The room is very spacious and the staff is always freindly.
With each room set on the slope of the hill, the too many steps from each utilities; swimming pool, the Spa, etc. could be a problem for not-so-young guests with knee problems. The breakfast can have more varieties for guests who stay more than 2 days.

Hotel Tjampuhan is worth the experience of a balinese natural environment. The Spa treatment is very unique with the location next to the river and the sound of the river flowing completes the package. The hotel is well maintained although quite old and the room service is very attentive to the guests' needs. The fact that the hotel is not in the center of Ubud turns out to be OK with th shuttle service and peace and quietenss in returns.

Beautiful hotel, great character, good service.”

Balinese house type setting, Beautiful landscaping 7 swimming pools. Gorgeous spa - graet stone carvings, lovely outlook.

Tjampuhan Hotel has great character. We loved the fact that all of the rooms were in Balinese style houses. Lots of paths and steps between rooms meant that you needed to be reasonably fit! Service was excellent. Pools and spa beautiful. Good shuttle bus service to and from town centre, though only a 10 minute walk. The restaurant was beautiful with an abundance of stone carvings. Breakfasts were good. Nice selection on dinner menu. we would stay there again!

    Great location, charming hotel.”

Close to town, bags of character, friendly staff, beautiful gardens

We chose Tjampuhan Hotel having already stayed in a sister hotel (Pita Maha) and were very happy with our choice. The hotel nestles on the side of the valley, just on the edge of Ubud town centre. The rooms are not new, but are well maintained, and the views out of the windows are beautiful, with green foliage everywhere. My one niggle is that smoking is permitted in the restaurant. If only smokers were more considerate of those around them (this is not a criticism of the hotel, although a non-smoking restaurant should be normal in the 21st century).

    Wonderful short stay in paradise”

Beautiful, authentic decor in scenic, restful setting

We (my 14 yr. old son and I) had a very nice stay. This was one of the only places in the world that he did not mind the absence of an internet connection in the room. We both appreciated the beauty of the area---We were told that Tjampuhan is the name of the royal family in the area. The Hotel staff was very helpful and if one of them wasn't sure what we wanted they found a staff member who could help us. We particularly appreciated that they packed us box breakfasts when we had to leave at 5:45a for the airport! Also, the center of Ubud is about a 20-minute walk from the hotel and sometimes we used their free shuttle that runs a few times a day and into the evening. Ubud is magical and this was a restful, beautiful and nice place to stay. I would definitely return with my partner for a romantic vacation.
