Nice but expensive”
Tokonamiso sits a short stroll from its fancier sister hotel where you can use the onsen, order meals, and drink free coffee and tea in a lounge with awesome views. Tokonamiso itself is a little dated but the rooms and shared restrooms are fine. The price for the hotel/onsen is completely fair. WARNING: where they get you is food! It’s between $25-35 USD per person per meal not including drinks. For two people and two nights, we ended up with a $440 food bill. It’s pretty good bento style food, and it’s optional... the problem is that there are no other options for miles and without a car you’re stuck. A shuttle runs to the closest towns at 9am, but the only return trips are at 4 or 5pm and cabs are ~$50 usd. There is a fridge and microwave available if you come prepared. All in all, we had a lovely time and enjoyed hiking the postal road, but don’t kid yourself into thinking this is a $115/night hotel. Also important: rent the private onsen! It’s amazing :)

Excellent”
We stayed here for one night before going to Kiso Valley. It is about 15 minutes drive from Magome. We had a car, would not recommend this for anyone using public transportation. This is a small building near a more expensive hotel. It is very basic - hallway with about 15 rooms and a small "lobby" with wifi and a few tables. Room itslef is Japanese traditional and very comfortable, but nothing fancy. The hotels share amenities so the spa is nice (more western than other ryokans we visited, not thermal waters) - very clean and a nice perk. For the price and location (everything near Magome seemed to be booked) it was a good stay.

Great place to relax and away from the city”
Half the price of the sister hotel, but you'll get to enjoy the sister hotel facilities. Onsen was good, food not bad. Free drinking water, refillable, do bring your own bottle (papercup provided). Room is spacious, with basic amenities. Free shuttle bus to and from Tsumago provided. Morning 9am/950am to Tsumago/Nagiso Station. Afternoon 410pm/510pm pickup at Tsumago. Staff is friendly. Easy check in and checkout process.

A friendly place that shares dining and bathing experiences with a nearby Ryokan. ”
I liked this place. The food was delicious!

agoda is vague, uncertain”
I don't trust agoda (this comment is not related to this hotel but with a hotel in taipei, jingshan Recreation Area )

Rooms are clean, but empty and there is no shower or onsen in this place. You need to walk 100 meter”
Rooms are clean, but empty and there is no shower or onsen in this place. You need to walk 100 meter to the nearby place for that... Staff is friendly and nice. There is absolutely nothing around, so if you do not order meals here, you will need to drive at least 30-40 minutes to the nearest place ! Bed-making is self-service.

No showers in the room or in the building ! very remote, nothing nearby. ”
No showers in the room or in the building ! very remote, nothing nearby. And no one was ever present at the place. Owners are 100 meters away in the more up-scale hotel.

Far below expectations”
Far below expectations. It’s a side building of a bigger hotel, with no facilities at all and zero atmosphere. You don’t feel at ease and not welcome. Also the main hotel is not really cozy and misses a bar. The onsen in the main hotel building is nice, but in the other building. We left after 1 night despite having booked for 2 and not getting a refund.

Disappointing, very unhelpful.”
Very basic Ryokan. Older and not updated. No amenity. The use of the onsen next door was nice, however that hotel, is dated as well. Shared toilets, basic rooms, dormitory-like. Wifi only available in the lobby. Staff was not friendly or helpful. Very poor value for the money.

Perfect getaway”
When we arrived at the ryokan, the staff informed us that as there were spare rooms in the fukinomori sister hotel and we were the only guest in tokonamiso, they took the courtesy of giving us a free upgrade! We were so pleasantly surprised as its winter and walking back and forth from the ryokans to do the onsen would've been slightly troublesome. The staff were also very attentive and lent us umbrellas as it was raining the following day, shuttle bus service made it very convenient to access tsumago from our ryokan. All in all a very enjoyable stay and the view from the ryokan was amazing, onsen was also superb, would definitely come back again in the future :)

Great quiet location”
This place was really good! We traveled with a 1 year old baby and it has been a great experience. The guest-house is far from everywhere, but the surrondings are amazing and they offer a shuttle service to Tsumago and Nagiso every morning and afternoon. The onsen was great and the room spacious, clean and comfortable. The dinner and breakfast are good, perhaps a little bit expensive, but it was still a good experience. We would recommend it!

Very good”
The Tokonamiso Ryokan was pretty average (quite old) and not great , smelled like mold in the room, but the ryokan was owned and managed by the nearby Hotel Fuki No Mori - which was excellent and had a great onsen we were allowed to use, so that made it worthwhile.

Fantastic Onsen!”
Really enjoyed our stay here. The rooms are very spacious and of a traditional style with futon beds, tradtional japanese robes and sandals are provided. The onsens are located in the sister hotel, fukinomori (lol), located next door. The onsens (both indoor and out) were fantastic and one of the highlights of our trip. The staff are fantastic, very helpful and friendly. However, if you intend to have an evening meal and breakfast you need to book in advance.

Relaxing”
I booked here when unable to book in Tsumago - our main reason for coming to the area. It is a short distance away, but a beautiful drive to a beautiful area. Shuttle bus service was excellent. The guest house itself is basic but fine, but being able to use the excellent facilities of the hotel next door made for a memorable stay. There is nowhere else to eat or buy food, so come prepared or with a budget to splurge on some fantastic food. Staying two nights with the day to follow the Magame - Tsumago walk was perfect.

Beautiful place, good value with some issues.”
This place was in a beautiful spot, and had an observation deck for viewing the stars, a great traditional onsen, a private onsen, great Japanese food, and very comfortable Japanese rooms. Highly recommend it, but had a problem with two things where communication was lacking: Firstly, we had no idea that it was so far away from the station, that there were shuttle buses and at what time they departed.. We found out too late that the last shuttle was at 5pm and there was a bus at 6pm. We had to spend about $50 AUD on a taxi! When we rang them, there was limited English spoken. Secondly, we discovered that there was no food on offer for dinner without 24 hours notice and no restaurants in the area and that we should go to the town store where there was nothing suitable. With more communication on Agoda, food options and possibly a later shuttle bus, this place would be a winner.

Lovely mountain retreat”
Very friendly staff, great location. Breakfast was a treat, definitely recommended! Also, the onsen (outside and indoor bath) were great and offered a wonderful view. Make sure to arrange the hotel shuttle from Tsumago if you are planning to walk the Nakasendo trail.

Four adults”
Rooms were basic; distance to reception (separate building) unlike regular ryokans where check in is in same building. With the rain (typhoon) entrance to ryokan was dangerous with rocks and boulders, especialy with minimal lighting.

Hostel level Ryokan in the mountains”
This place is far away in the mountains. There is a high class place across the street, where we ate dinner and breakfast. Both were very expencive for what they were. The rooms are modest and self-service and smell strongly of gas, as there is a gas heater in the lobby. The bath was out-of-order, so we were allowed to use the bath of the better place across the street. It was luxurious... They offer twice a day shuttle bus to and from the town and train stop. Very friendly staff all around, as usual for Japan. But there were a couple of younger staff member who spoke fluent english, very helpful. I wouldn't recommend the place, for the high price we paid.

A bit out of the way, so organise a bus to the Ryokan - otherwise it’s a looong walk”
Great onsens, great breakfast and dinner. Tokonomiso uses the more expensive Fukomomori facilities (onsen and meals). The room is basic, but great
