Transportation in Armenia
Armenia offers a range of public and private transportation options, primarily centered in Yerevan and major cities. Travelers can use metro, buses, minibuses, taxis, and ride-hailing apps for urban and intercity travel.
- Public Transport: Yerevan Metro operates a single line with 10 stations. City buses and minibuses (marshrutkas) serve urban and suburban routes. No trams or ferries operate in Armenia.
- Transportation Apps: Local ride-hailing apps include GG Taxi and Yandex Go. International apps like Uber and Grab are not available.
- Internal Flights: Domestic flights are limited. Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) in Yerevan is the main hub. Armenian Airlines and Air Dilijans offer occasional internal flights, mainly to Gyumri (Shirak Airport).
- Trains and Buses: South Caucasus Railway operates intercity trains, including Yerevan-Gyumri and Yerevan-Tbilisi (Georgia). Intercity buses connect Yerevan with Gyumri, Vanadzor, Dilijan, and other cities.
- Taxis and Ride-Hailing: Taxis are widely available. Fares are metered or app-based. Cash and card payments are accepted in most apps.
- Car Rental: International and local agencies operate in Yerevan. An international driving permit is recommended for foreign drivers.
- Airport Transfers: Taxis and GG Taxi app are common for airport-city transfers. No direct metro or train service from Zvartnots Airport.
- Accessibility: Public transport accessibility for travelers with disabilities is limited. Some newer buses are equipped for wheelchair access.
- Unique Transport: The Wings of Tatev cable car is a notable tourist attraction, connecting Halidzor and Tatev Monastery.
- Safety and Payment: Public transport is generally safe and reliable. Payment is usually in Armenian dram (AMD), by cash or card in apps.
