Georgia uses the Georgian Lari (GEL) as its official currency. Cash is widely used, but electronic payments are increasingly common in urban areas. Currency exchange and ATM access are generally reliable in cities and tourist centers.

  • Payment methods: Cash is accepted everywhere; credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops in major cities. American Express is less common.
  • Contactless payments: Contactless cards and mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) are accepted at many urban merchants, but less so in rural areas.
  • ATMs: Widely available in cities and airports; most accept international cards. Some rural areas may have limited ATM access.
  • Currency exchange: Available at banks, exchange offices, and airports. Exchange rates may vary; official ID may be required for large transactions.
  • Foreign currency restrictions: Payments in foreign currency are not accepted; all transactions must be in GEL.
  • Cash import/export limits: Up to 30,000 GEL (approx. 11,000 USD) can be brought in or taken out without declaration. Amounts above must be declared to customs.
  • Transaction fees: Foreign card transactions may incur a 1–3% surcharge; ATM withdrawals may have additional fees.
  • Common issues: Some small businesses and taxis accept only cash. Notify your bank before travel to avoid card blocks.
  • Major banks: TBC Bank, Bank of Georgia, Liberty Bank.
  • Regulations: The National Bank of Georgia oversees currency and payment regulations. Travelers should check for updates before arrival.
