Hungary Payment Methods & Currency Exchange Guide

Hungary Payment Methods & Currency Exchange Guide

Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (HUF) as its official currency. Most urban businesses accept a range of payment methods, with contactless and card payments widely available. Currency exchange and ATM access are straightforward, but travelers should be aware of local regulations and fees.

  • Official currency: Hungarian Forint (HUF)
  • Payment methods: Cash, major credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard), and mobile payments (Apple Pay, Google Pay) are commonly accepted. American Express is less widely accepted.
  • Contactless payments: Widespread in cities and tourist areas; mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) supported by many retailers.
  • ATMs: Readily available in cities and airports; most accept international cards. Some ATMs may charge a withdrawal fee (typically HUF 1,000–2,000 per transaction).
  • Currency exchange: Available at banks, exchange offices (“valutaváltó”), and airports. Exchange rates at airports may be less favorable.
  • Foreign currency restrictions: Payments in foreign currency are generally not accepted. Large cash transactions (over HUF 1.5 million) may require reporting under anti-money laundering laws.
  • Cash import/export limits: Up to EUR 10,000 (or equivalent in HUF/other currencies) can be brought in or taken out without declaration. Amounts above this must be declared to customs.
  • Transaction fees: Foreign card transactions may incur a 1–3% surcharge. Dynamic currency conversion at ATMs or POS terminals may result in higher fees.
  • Major banks: OTP Bank, K&H Bank, Erste Bank, UniCredit Bank.
  • Government regulations: Hungarian National Bank oversees currency and payment regulations. Travelers should check for updates before arrival.
  • Tips: Always choose to be charged in HUF rather than your home currency to avoid unfavorable exchange rates. Notify your bank of travel to avoid card blocks.
